Marketing Works All I See in Bags Are....

I used to play in a large group several years ago. Back then I was all ping and I don't believe anybody else had Ping woods. And there were about 40 or so people that would come and go in these groups. A couple of sets of ping irons and I'm pretty sure no ping wedges. I seem to recall seeing mostly taylormade woods and callaway irons. Maybe a couple of sets of titleist irons. Mizuno? Can't remember anyone having a set but I remember lots of guys talking about mizunos. I never gave equipment much of a second thought.....and then came golfwrx.

One can buy golf bags without giant brand logo/lettering on the bag. I personally don't like going out on a golf course outfitted looking like a NASCAR stock car at Daytona Speedway with dozens of logos on my bag, head covers, hat, jacket, shirt, pants, belt buckle, socks, shoes, glove, shafts, grips, tattoos, etc. Branding logos on some stuff like clubs and balls is okay!

My point was dude idolizes his club players equipment.

To answer your question on what I play:

Driver = Epic SZ 9* with a Tensei White 75 Stiff flex tipped 1", 45.5" OAL at D4 for utmost control and spin reduction before it drops off to knuckle ball territory. I could care less if some stranger has a twist face something because my driver is optimized for a dozen fairways and length.

3 wood = Epic SZ 13.5*

Two iron = Srixon U45 17*, 40.5* OAL Recoil 110 at D2.

Mizuno MP18 Blades 3-PW (21*-48*), +1/2" and 2* upright

SW = T7 56-10

LW = T7 60-14

Enables me to hit every shot and cover every yardage on the course.

I play public and private championship courses.

So WTF would I gain peaking at people's bag?

You win.

You are a better man than me... you show great restraint.

It's not worthwhile to argue a different issue than the topic. I like to see what other people play because I'm curious....just like going to a cars and coffee gathering and checking out the cars.

Would this bag be out of the question?

It just sounds shallow and insecure to me, at least that’s my personal experience with people checking out my bag, including my best friend.

Marketing does work to a certain segment but I may belong to the fraction. When I find something that works, I keep if for a very long time.

Actually, it’s very difficult for me to shop for equipment because everything is custom.

I've observed mostly the large OEM's where I play, including mixed bags. Probably seen Srixon twice. Never see eye candy Honma's, PXG's, the new Hogan's.

Definitely regional. Here in California where there are a lot of Asian-catered golf shops (Korean, Chinese, etc), it's not uncommon to see Honma, Fourteen, an occasional PRGR, in the wild. I've never seen PXG in person, lol.

I have to wonder if you see KZG occasionally, if at all. Headquartered in Palm Springs . . .

I see lots of

Callaway

TM

Ping

Mizuno-

Titleist/Scotty/Vokey

I know 2 guys who play PXG and Callaway combos.

Callaway and TM are probably the most common. Along with Vokey wedges.

Ping G400 Testing G410.  10.5 set at small -
Ping G410 3, 5 and 7 wood

Ping G410 5 hybrid-not much use.
Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal. 5-G
Vokey 54.10, 2009 58.12 M, Testing TM MG2 60* TW grind and MG3 56* TW grind.  Or Ping Glide Stealth, 54,58 SS.
Odyssey Pro #1 black
Hoofer, Ecco, Bushnell

Agree, aggressive marketing does work.

Odd, but I have no Callway in my bag now. I once had driver, fwys and irons, and may still have a driver next year, depending on Epic Flash.

But now it's Ping driver, TEE fairways, Mizuno Irons, 2 Ping wedges, and an odd collection of putters - which stable recently added a Odyssey 7s Red - but it's not in the bag.

Haven't had a Callaway in my bag since the original s2h2 3-wood. Am I missing out?

Over here (Japan), at the range and on the course I see:

XXIO

Tourstage/Bridgestone

Miura (blades and passing point Cbs)

the odd Epon

Mizuno, a fair bit

Some Titliest

The odd TM wood

Rarely see Callaway or Ping

Very few Srixon - Just in shops

PXG opened a store about ten minutes from our course a short while ago.

Can't wait for next season to see how many players dropped the coin on them.

the course proshop carries several brands and has fitting capability for Titleist, Cally, Ping. TM.

they have demo days during the summer for most major brands.

GG and PGASS are about a half hour away. DSG is a bit closer. CC is just down the road. you can buy anything around here that's a major OEM.

guys would walk past me and say, 'Wow, Tommy Armours, I used to play those.' I'd always be polite. sometimes I thought it was a knock, like, why doesn't he get something newer. so they do pay attention. more than I had thought.

currently playing:
FT-5 - D
Cally FT hybrids
Hogan Edge GS, 4-PW
Vokey Oil Can 52, 56
Ping Anser 2

TM FlexTech Lite/Titleist StaDry

Interesting. All I see are Titleist wedges, Cally or TM irons, and TM / Cally drivers. Your folks are more diversified than my brand suck-up crowd.

All I see in bags are Cally's and TM's. After that the percentages drop like an anvil. Have you all seen the same thing? I RARELY see Pings anymore...in the 80's and 90's it seemed like everyone played some variant of Pings. I hardly ever see Mizuno irons...even the forged CBs. And don't bother with Wilson or Cobra...at least where I play...ZIP. It's a shame because there's so many great clubs...but hey, maybe I'm missing the boat?

I tried to get some figures on individual company market share from different sources, but most of the detailed side-by-side reports cost $100 or more.

The grid below gives some clues on densities of different golf club OEMs:

  • Manufacturer bag counts for the Top 49 pros in the 2016 Players Championship
  • 2017 sales reports from assorted sources for industry leaders.

Among amateurs In my region, I see Callaway, TaylorMade, Ping, and Titleist, plus lots of Cobra hybrids among older players. I play often with a senior's group, and about the only TM equipment they carry are Drivers. Several low HDCP players in our area play Bridgestone irons and woods. Also, we're only about 300 miles from Tour Edge in western Chicago zone, and several players have Exotics, especially in fairway woods.

What's In The Bag (As of April 2023, post-MAX change + new putter)

Driver:  Tour Edge EXS 10.5° (base loft); weights neutral   ||  FWs:  Calla Rogue 4W + 7W

Hybrid:  Calla Big Bertha OS 4H at 22°  ||  Irons:  Calla Mavrik MAX 5i-PW

Wedges*:  Calla MD3: 48°... MD4: 54°, 58° ||  PutterΨSeeMore FGP + SuperStroke 1.0PT, 33" shaft

Ball: 1. Srixon Q-Star Tour / 2. Calla SuperHot (Orange preferred)  ||  Bag: Sun Mountain Three 5 stand bag

    * MD4 54°/10 S-Grind replaced MD3 54°/12 W-Grind.

     Ψ  Backups:

  • Ping Sigma G Tyne (face-balanced) + Evnroll Gravity Grip |
  • Slotline Inertial SL-583F w/ SuperStroke 2.MidSlim (50 gr. weight removed) |

Taylormade is heavy where I live, Ping/Cally/Titleist are popular too.

I've never seen a Srixon club in person. ...

At the next pro tournament you attend, follow Ryan Palmer. He's a Srixon iron player now.
