What are your equipment quirks/preferences?

Going beyond maybe just strange clubs in your bag, what sorts of oddities and specific things do you NEED to have? What specs or preferences do you have that someone else would pick up your club and wonder how the hell you can hit with it? What small or seemingly innocuous things do you feel like your game would fall apart with out? No judgement, release your inner Keegan Bradeley and let your weird out! :D

Stiffer profile shafts than my swing speed would suggest. A 2 and a 4 hybrid to fill out the gap beteen a fairway and 5 iron. 32 inch putter. 60 instead of 58, even though gap analysis would always say 58. Nothing too odd, but things I always need.

Haha, nice idea for a thread!

I have a preference for clubs that are a bit beat up, preferrably with lead tape on them somewhere. I don't like idiot marks on woods or sclaff marks on the toe end of irons, but rough looking crowns and irons with bag chatter just look right to me.

However if a putter has the smallest dink within 1/2" of the sweetspot I feel that it has no chance of holing from 6 foot and in.

Hah! I feel ya on the the putter comment, I hate anything that distracts my eye near any form of alignment.

For me I have a couple quirks with the common theme of "whatever this is supposed to do makes me do the opposite". So many people seem to seek woods that sit open, I can't stand them. Give me an open faced wood and my brain says "you need to shut the face faster to keep this from going right" and i'll hook them. GIve me a neutral or a closed face however and i'm fine.

Similar idea with grips, both in terms of size and build up. I like a decent amount of taper purely so I feel like there is a natural resistance to the grip slipping through my hands since there is more material behind my hands. Without the taper my brain says "grip this harder" and things get uncomfortable. Same thing with build up, put too much under my right and its the same thing as with the open faced woods; I feel like I have to flip it to keep it from going right. For those two reasons the MCC+4 grips that so many people love are my arch nemesis'.

Putters, I can't putt with typical full shaft offset Anser-style putters, I feel like I have no idea where the face is pointing at impact. Give me half shaft at MOST or straight in without offset. I have a similar issue with offset in irons, the less the better.

Hey V you know I'm on a similar wavelength for our club specs and quirks lol

It's a long list lol. But I do play what performs, looks and feels best imo for each spot. I like all arounder style clubs. It could be a new +15y club but if it's ugly and feels bad pass us something out of the last decade.

Yup, and as an audio engineer by trade I am also very sensitive to sound which always has the potential to be a deal breaker regardless of the performance. Thankfully I really enjoy the somewhat muted carbon sound of my M1 and the Nikes have a nice crisp sound to them.

Grips with the logo on underneath so I can't see them.

Basically did it when I was younger because that was what Tiger did now, I just can't look at any writing down there.

I am a little taller and like like my irons and wedges over-length. Not that strange - but play my irons using 3/8th inch increments between clubs. It allows my long irons to be a more "regular" length and then my short irons to be nice and long. I don't feel so hunched over with wedges and short irons.

Plus using 3/8th inch increments makes it really easy to MOI match them.

I also use a 36" putter - I just feels more comfortable.

My buddies think I’m weird for putting grips on upside down. Nice to know I’m not alone!!!!

For me...I prefer oversized grips to minimize the clubface from turning over through impact. Most people dislike offset and thick toplines in their irons (especially for player's clubs) but for me I don't mind. I have the thinnest smallest butter knife blades in my basement (my FG-17s, and 1971 Buttonbacks) and have shovels with the thickest toplines and offset known to man (my '97 Berthas) and have no problems playing both as long as you have good technique.

Heavy swing weights in my wedges

Yardage book has to be in my back left pocket

I can't have a spare ball in my pocket at any time, otherwise I feel like it's an omen that I'll lose the one I'm hitting.

When I tee the ball up, i can't stand seeing the alignment aid pointing offline. It puts a crooked shot in my head from the get go.

I could probably go on, I'm a head case lol

It May be to my detriment, but I really dislike looking down at a putter with too much alignment help. I don’t want lines in the cavity or multiple colors. I just want a single dot or line on the top of the blade. I must be in the minority on this issue since it has become harder and harder to find a putter meeting this description without placing a custom order. I’ve got an old Cameron Circa 62 and a Ping Vault 2.0 ZB on the way that fit the bill . . . and a corner of my closet filled with putters having too much alignment.

I’m reminded of the Sean Connery line in “The Hunt for Red October” where he tells Micelli “Give me one ping . . . and one ping only.”

By random coincidence all my headcovers currently match my bag (red and black). I really, really like the look of it and it's preventing me from switching out any clubs.

I prefer irons/wedges that are kinda beat up....but i clean them after every shot.

Im very sensitive to my grip size, i will put a grip on and take it off a number of times until its just right.

I avoid at all costs having a full bag of clubs from one OEM. I dont want to look poser-ish.

For graphite shafts i like some graphics at least part of the way down the shaft. Its all one solid color the club head looks further away lol. Especially white, would never use an all white shaft.

I try to find clubs for under $50 that i like. My hybrid, 4 wood and putter cost $40 each and i like them all.

Always have exactly 4 tees in my pocket. Always the white/yellow pro length.

Same here, I can't stand looking at logos now, plus I like the reverse NDMC anyway.

I've been meaning to try those Iomics since I love my Iomic putter grip. How do you like them and what would you compare them to?

I am a little taller and like like my irons and wedges over-length. Not that strange - but play my irons using 3/8th inch increments between clubs. Oh yeah, big +1 here. I am way happier with a progressive set in 3/8" gaps, best change i've made in terms of irons/wedges.

Grips and size of iron head have to correleate... midsize (iron) head gets midsize grips or extra wraps.....small blade and midsize grips feels strange so std grip with extra wrap or 2

Sounds weird I know but that's how my mind visualizes feel

That is an interesting one! As a musician I have a very similar feeling with guitars and their body size in relation to neck size.
