My swing - early extension

I’m no instructor but I’d say it’s because your hands drop too much to start the downswing. Your right arm is behind your body and the left arm is pinned to your chest as a result of the hands dropping too much. You early extend so you can hit the ball. Might be easier from a shorter backswing position to make the changes needed.

Most importantly - I'm no instructor not am I a + hcp.

That said, I did (sometimes still do) suffer from early extension. The Clay Ballard video (linked in the many early extension threads) does a good job of explaining that extension is good, it's just the early part that's bad. He then links that to a squat to start (covering the ball), linked to properly timed extension.

The thing I noticed in your video that I used to struggle with, is that you dip down in the back swing, which causes you to get steeper. The early extension is you standing back up, to essentially shallow the plane and get back to where you feel confident striking the ball.

Having had the same issues, what's helped me immensely is being more aware of my head position. By focusing on not swaying or dipping, and trying to stay tall during the back swing, I have room to engage my legs (squat) at the proper time on the down swing, which helps properly time extension.

Again, that's just what's worked for me.

Take a look at the handle of the golf club in your swing. Look at how low the handle is at address, and how high it is at impact. You are delivering a very high handle to the golf ball and that is going to have a huge effect on the lie you present at impact, as well as strike, path, loads of other things. Maybe trying to feel a lower handle through impact will inadvertently help with your early extension.

I can't tell very well from the down the line view, but do you retain the wrist angle in the down swing, or start to lose it (cast) early?

The reason I ask is that the right hip, and more importantly the right shoulder and arm get well behind your chest (too far behind) at the top of your swing.

You will need to standup (early extend) in the down swing to route the club to make contact with the ball.

If you try to keep your head over the ball (no lift/EE) then you will hit the turf several inches behind the ball.

I have found that the most important thing to do, to help eliminate early extension is to have the correct intention BEFORE you swing. In my case, I was just swinging the club and early extension was the resulting move. But if you know how your body needs to move through impact and you 'feel/see' yourself doing that before you swing, you are 80% of the way cured.

Note #2 that an earlier poster mentioned, if your hands are too low at set up, you have to early extend to make up for that thru impact. You have no choice. Try setting up with 'high hands' and see if that helps.

Left side pooping up early. Need better angle and face on to see why.

Left hip and shoulder need to stay lower longer.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

Would trying to keep my left shoulder low in the transition (or at least to feel like it) help with it?

Here’s my iron swing which I think is not quite as bad but there’s still some EE there.

Sure that's what you want but I don't know how you'll do that if you continue to generate your power from a thrust motion instead of a rotational motion.

Try to start your transition with your lead (left) knee moving down the target line. This will kick start your hip rotation and will put you into the Snead squat. It took some practice but that's the motion I used to tame my EE. I'm no instructor so take this for the 2 cents it's worth.

I just don't get it... OP's golf swing looks great to me & the ball flight looks dead on. What am I missing here?

Can't agree with you more.I think some people are just looking for attention and praise. There are folks here who truly do need help and this guy ain't one of em!

What do you have to be a 10 or above to post a swing asking for help?

Of course not but this guy clearly does not EE.In fact,he makes a very athletic move through the ball. It's MY opinion that his motives for this thread are not to get help but to get his ego stroked.Sorry if my bluntness offends you Jutt.....

OP knows what he's talking about. He starts standing up in in transition and is pretty much vertical at impact.

His self-diagnosis of early extension is fair. Every golfer is always looking to get help on their swing, regardless of their level

I am clearly not posting for ego purposes. I am terrible with the driver off the tee and i believe EE is causing inconsistent results (2 way miss).

I don't know what video you're looking at, but thats classic EE in my book. Yeah i'm sure he hits some good shots with that move, but I'm also sure he can miss off the planet with it.

Anyway, sorry for the sidetrack op.

Listen to Monte, and do yourself a favor and get a tripod, selfie stick or something, that angle from the ground makes diagnosing pretty hard.

Then I do apologize for my incorrect assumptions.FWIW I think you have a very good swing and the ball flight is impressive.I'll take your move over mine any day!

Simple..... look at your feet. You don’t shift any weight in transition. Big turn in backswing, club drops behind you, but no weight shift.... you have to stand up to get the club through. Work in shift weight and turn.

Im pretty bad off the tee and as you can see from the video i get quite a bit of early extension. Whats the root cause of this? I cant seem to get it fixed, none of the drills work for me.

You're generating quite a bit of power but doing it the opposite way that's better for playing golf. Early extending is actually a natural way to produce leverage. Joe Miller( long drive champion) does this.

Rather than standing up to produce power, you want to be sitting down and getting your chest closer to the ground to produce leverage. Basically you need to do the polar opposite of what you are doing now. It won't be an easy fix I warn you. Early extending is not necessarily a fatal flaw anyway. Jack Nicklaus had a bit of it when swinging driver and he was a pretty good player.

maybe ur jeans are too tight? i joke but i don't. i notice that if my clothing is tight in the hip/thigh region i have a harder time rotating them,

lol. 'maybe ur jeans are too tight?'

Most slim jeans nowa days are made of a very flexible fabric aka there's no restriction.

maybe u wear jeggings, but not me.

So had a range session after my lesson. This time focusing on keeping my right knee flexed for proper weight transfer. I was able to slightly shorten my swing and my EE is slightly better (although still there). So I still need more work but believe it’s going in the right direction.
