Steve Stricker testing the New Callaway Flash driver

Recommended Posts

Am i the only one that finds limited success w sliding weights, I know the new Ping driver will have one as well

The older TM models with weights heel and toe had more effect on ball flight . .for me at least

For myself , the sliding weight helped me dial in my perfect shot shape. I normally play a slight draw and occasionally a nasty snap hook rears it's ugly head at least twice per round, with the sliding weight, I was able to after considerable time on the range find the perfect spot for the weight.

The driver I was using was the Big Bertha, I believe the 2014 model, I never could get the Epic dialed in, mostly because it just felt too light.

I am excited that the Flash SubZero has the sliding weight, I need help with spin control and the Flash SubZero should do the trick.

Sorry for the long reply.

I have never been a fan of sliding weights, but that is just me. I have always found that it actually messes up my swing more than it helps. I hit a lot of 3 woods and unless i get sliding weights on every wood, I will have same miss with my wood and long irons. I am the type that I might hit a draw or a slight fade, it changes every time I step on first tee.

DRIVER --Rogue sub zero

FW- Rogue 3 wood
M2--5hl

IRONS--- jpx 900 forged 5-pw

WEDGES--T7-49-53-56-59

PUTTER-- scotty cameron buttonback

"Flash Face"??? Come on. Couldn't even come up with your own gimmick to sell new drivers? Seems like a twist face counter to me.

This is NOTHING like twist face. Twist face is simply high toe/low heel correction, nothing more. this face structure has never been done before. Should be interesting.

Why? With the Rogue supposedly better than the current EPIC (why else would they bring it out... :stink: ), why bring out another version of the old model? Is the sliding weight in the back that much in demand that they were losing sales with the non-sliding weight Rogue? I've never played a driver with the sliding weight... never saw the need, but that's just me.

I have a older, "inferior" Epic Sub Zero. Wouldn't trade it for a Rogue... I prefer the EPIC SZ.

Rogue was more forgiving and higher MOI. They weren't chasing distance because it was there. It was marginally longer but some didn't see any gains.. Now the Flash... whoa! I saw 10 + yards over my EPIC/Rogue. Just carry.

A few range session hitting range balls but numbers were consistent.. looking forward to next year for sure.

Once again, lots of complaining about the colors on the BOTTOM of a club. Someone explain to me how in the world that matters?

Does it matter for performance? No.

Does it matter aesthetically when I have to look at it every time I pull it in and out of the bag? Yes.

No different than having two identically priced cars on a lot and you're going to buy one. One is pink, purple, and orange while the other is a nice stealth black. Pretty sure I know which one you're going to choose...but maybe not if colors and looks don't matter to you because why does it matter which paint color is on the OUTSIDE of the car?

This is the kind of thing that I've been hearing that has me really intrigued to try the Flash. I'm guessing you were pretty well fitted for your current driver based on other posts I've seen from you, so those kinds of gains from this new face tech are really interesting. For me to use the same driver for 2 seasons is basically unheard of in recent history, but the Epic SZ has been that good for me, so if the Flash is really that much of a leap forward, that's game changing.

What was your impression of dispersion/forgiveness of the Flash compared to your Rogue SZ?

Winter sucks, single digit temps make it worse.

I feel you there. We're about to enter into the worst if it here in about a month. -20 to -30 wind chill temps. Sometimes lower. I've been lobbying my wife to move to Texas for a few years now.

Is it even possible to golf in the winter? Cold doesn't bother me, cold and windy bothers me.

Oh, here, no chance. The courses close October 31st. If you can play up to that point, you are lucky. We had a pretty healthy amount of snowfall this October. Last year, I want to say we weren't actually able to get on the course until May. So, the off seasons can be excruciatingly long. But, I don't really like playing bad weather golf either. So, If it's 40 degrees, wet, and windy, I probably would opt not to play. Maybe once in a while just to say I played.

If there is no snow cover, we can get a warm spell and golf some. Warm being 40ish with sun and little wind. Usually the carts are locked up so we walk, which helps keep you warm. Use short, sharp tees that you can barely get in the ground, don't take a divot and never fly the ball to the green, especially if the green slopes to the north. Usually the hole is full of ice so you just try to hit the pin, which won't come out, for months.

Haven't complained about this club, but I think I understand why there are complaints. With so many options for good drivers and very small performance differences at the top, looks can be the deciding factor. Some players might look to play clubs that give them the very best performance, but there are many who aren't playing competitively and would rather have what they see as a better-looking club even if they're losing 5 yards off the tee. If you only care about performance more power to ya.

Terrible analogy. Let’s change that to the bottom of the car, as really, that’s what we’re talking about, the bottom of the club. And no, I couldn’t care less the color of the bottom of my car.

Nice try though! If you’re saying that you look at the bottom of the driver when you pull the headcover off and the color of the bottom somehow has an effect on your confidence, well then, I think there’s probably bigger issues.

Consistency was better but only after 2 sessions.. we all know that honeymoon phase can happen.

However, my impact location was almost same spot every time. Move the sliding weight over to that hit area (slight towards the toe) boom.. picked up another 5 yards..

I am so looking forward to 2019
