Player cavity backs

Hi,

So, after I buy an engagement ring this weekend, I’m going full bore into a new iron search. I currently play Mizuno mp-63 irons, but I’m looking to add a little forgiveness. I love the look at address and the feel on pure strikes but I definitely need a little more forgiveness. I’m currently looking at the Ping I series, and JPX forged. Anyone have any insights into which performed best for them. I’m also planning on looking at players distance irons (P790 etc) but it’s probably a long shot that I’d go that route. Thanks.

Second the congrats on the engagement. Don't sleep on the Srixon Z585 and or Z785. Both great irons and IMO. the Z785's are forgiving for what they are and feel as good as anything. GL on your search

TM p790's are really great irons. Lofts are too strong but if that might be what fits you better. So forgiving and feel great. JPX forged are also excellent and similar but with better feel. You can't go wrong either way. I'd recommend hitting several different irons and see what you like better rather than someone else's opinion.

Ditto on testing anything Srixon. My multiyear search for a more forgiving forged cavity back ended with a lucky purchase on eBay of the highly regarded Z-565 irons. I bought them without testing because of their their high regard by GolfWRX members and an incredibly low price offer accepted by the seller, knowing I could resell them for over $100 more than I paid. They are an absolute dream. In my second round with them a couple of buddies hit them a few times. Both ordered new sets, one is switching from Callaway Apex Pro 16's the other Taylor Made P's.

I've been trying all sorts of players cavity backs. I tried the Srixon's, the Pings, the Titleists and the Mizunos (as well as the Hogan PTX's).

Gold Medal: Mizuno 919 forged

Silver Medal: Srixon and Hogan (these two were a virtual tie, and quite frankly, had I tried these on the same day as the Mizunos it may have been a 3 way tie).

Bronze: AP2 (Great club, but it was set up with a shaft that I felt was very heavy. Probably not an indictment of the club but rather being set up wrong for me.

Here’s the post where one posts the brand/clubs that they have in their bag... While trying to sound as objective as possible. Although, that has likely happened 5 times, already =)

Look into Wilson Staff V4 or V6. Very compact (especially heel to toe length) forged player’s cavities with minimal offset. They feel great and can be found very cheap if you search. I picked up my V4’s this time last year for $200 brand new from Budget Golf. Now you can spend $700-1k more on the engagement ring!

Dont the overlook the P770 iron too. I’m picky about offset, and if you can handle a slightly thicker topljne these are worth a look especially for the price they are going for. I switched from 716cb and found no loss in workability but a noticeable increase in forgiveness. I prefer the “solid”one piece irons to the hollow body especially in the lower clubs. Plan on gaming mine for a while!

+2 z785 check a lot of boxes. My new set arrived last night. Great feel, looks and forgiveness. Easy to combo long irons with z585 or u85. I have 5-PW and then play u65 4 that has a modus 105s. Z785 are modus 120s. Def try to hit them, were best of pack for me

I'd suggest the best thing to do would be to get fitted for a set of irons, you'll be able to try a variety of different clubs and see what suits you best

We're all so different, what I like you'll have and vice versa

The AP2s are worth a shot too. Closer looking to blades with the forgiveness as well.

Yeah I would agree on that, if looks are as important as they seem to be, you can't not take a look at the AP2's.

P770 - EXCELLENT in all regards

Mizuno MMC - These beat out the P770s and 5 or 6 other sets this year. I would think perfect for the transition from where you are to what you are looking for.

I like the JPX 900 Forged way more than the 919 Forged. The new one is much different and I don’t care for the sole.

The 765/785 are excellent. The 765 is slightly more forgiving. I don’t like the Srixon 500 series as much as others, but of those I like the 585 the most. A little less chunky.

The Ping 210 may fit the bill. I also am curious about what the G410 will play like as they are supposed to have much less offset than the 400.

The AP2 will be a step up in forgiveness from what you have.

Don’t sleep on the new Bridgestones or the old ones — J15CB.

Legacy Black is a nice suggestion. The Cobra Forged Tour is highly underrated. Very nice clubs.

I did not like the TM 790, but I do think the 760 is a nice one.

Best of luck to you and your future bride. Make sure she understands the importance of you finding the right irons.

One caveat is that I don’t want a ton of offset either. I’m used to looking down at a butter knife iron. Very minimal offset is a must. Thanks for the well wishes.
