Frequency slope for 5.0 flex Matrix Program 130 set

Recommended Posts

About to attempt my first steel >> graphite reshaft on a set of irons and need a bit of help (please) on determining if the set's uncut frequency slope is ok. Looking to use some Matrix Program 130s I picked up for pretty cheap on one of those eBay sales back in January. I've tried to do a bit of frequency chart research but at some point, I just want to get going on this or move on to some other project.

Currently use DG S300 at a 5-iron playing length of about 38 1/8" on my MacGregor MT Pro CM gunmetals. I still hit them decently but would prefer a bit less effort. The Matrix are supposed to be a regular/5.0 flex (I've heard Matrix was kind of throwing products out there at the end which is why I am asking), but have very low torque and sound like they are supposed to be rather stout. In theory, I think they should be ok and should be better long-term for my joints.

Here are some of the uncut 5.0 shaft specs and the playing length I would make them:

  • 3-iron - 40" uncut with 292 CPM and would probably have playing length of 39.25"
  • 5-iron - 39" uncut with 311 CPM and would set at 38.25" playing length
  • 6-iron - 38.5" uncut with 319 CPM and would set at 37.5"
  • PW - 36.5" uncut with 360 CPM and would set at about 36"
  • The shafts I didn't list differ by about 9 - 12 CPMs from the ones above/below them.

I don't have to be ultra-precise with the CPM slope. Just wanted to confirm if the set's numbers are ok. If they are in the ballpark, I'm likely to be fine as I've lost a bit of the swing with some shoulder surgeries. I also don't plan on using the 3-iron and was just putting in the shaft to complete the set. If soft-stepping helps, I can do that and leave the 3-iron unshafted.

Thank you!

you are aware that they will SW out pretty light (from what I have read) built to standard length, so you may have to add more weight to the head (or tip weights) to get the SW's up close to D0 range, if that's what you want.

Can't help on the frequency slope issue though.

I did pick some of the 5.5 shafts off of ebayas well, but haven't done anything with them yet.

im not sure if thats labels on the shafts, or if you have measured them yourself and with what tip weight, and since i never worked with those shafts all i can do is tell you that NO CHART you can find will fit them, unless is specific for that model.

Since the set is strangers to me, i put them up like this.

PW 360 - #3 292 = 68 / 7 = 9.7 CPM between raw shafts

(Dynamic GOLD X100 is average 10.0 from shaft to shaft)

If this set had shafts that from the start was a good match to each other, we just put the PW on top and sub 11.33 for each shaft longer, and compare that to the numbers you got

PW - 360 - 360

#9 - 350.3 -?

#8 - 340.6 - ?

#7 - 330.9 - ?

#6 - 321.2 - 319

#5 - 311.5 - 311

#4 - 301.8 - ?

#3 - 292.2 - 292

I dont know the others, but this shafts is just fine, its no flyers or "way off specs", and they can be adjusted if needed.

Depending on what kind of set up you plan to build, a classic 4/8" SW matched or 3/8" with progressive SW, the flex slope on play ready clubs becomes a bit different if you dont adjust for that, but as 4/8" and flat SW they would play to a CPM slope of about 5.0 average from club to club.

Thats why you cant use RILFLE FCM chart, it has a progression of 4.3 CPM pr club (play ready clubs), so your set will look like its "to strong" in the short end, and "to soft in the long", but thats the nature of this shaft model, just like it is on DG X100 who is decimals stronger from club to club.

You cant use Kaufmans chart either, since that has a slope of 7.3 CPM pr inch or only 3.65 CPM from club to club (play ready)

So,,,you will have to make the chart yourself, if you really need one, but if ity was only to check quality of the raw shafts, and the other is in line with this with about 9.7 CPM from raw shaft to raw shaft, the set it good to go, its not crap, absolutly not, this is well within tolerance for most shafts, even CPM matched.

Many thanks Howard. The CPMs for the other shafts are +/- 1 or 2 from what you posted, so looks good. I was just trying to get a sense if these were reasonably grouped together. I didn't want to go through the hassle of pulling shafts and putting in new ones only to have them play like junk.

I was thinking of some 3/8" spreads between the irons. Had been reading a thread with Tom W's thoughts and found that rather interesting.

Thank you g. I am aware there are some SW challenges with these. I've heard about tip drilling but likely won't bother as I'll just mess that up. The holes are quite small in these, even for those flexible ones.

My drilling technique is probably similar to my driving - it will go sideways.

I used some program 130 about 5 or 6 yrs ago in reg flex and they were very stout!....I was bit shocked actually

But idk if that's concurrent with most recent offerings

Matrix has kinda fallen off the map where at one point they were " the shaft"

I do wonder how they are going to play with that really low torque. I have a R flex RIP 80 or whatever it is in a spare TM 5h and it’s rather different to hit.

Probably because they were fake. Not fake matrix, but - matrix, on it's way out, took stock and just painted random shaft models. As in, you could have a program 130 r flex that was actually a kujoh x flex, under the paint.

Hopefully OP didnt use these, I doubt there are anymore honest matrix shafts out on the market now.

And dont get me started on how golf deals and steels (golf xcess), etc., keeps pedaling this garbage.

Some S6 regular flex that were completely different shafts, and an RUL that had a .350tip that I ended up having to open case about. They gave me money back when that happened.

Unless it's new LA Golf... do not buy matrix.49nt6e411oyk.jpg
