Forgiving wedges- CBX, etc...

I’m looking for any feedback on wedges. I’ve read countless threads and tried multiple techniques, but my wedge game inside 50 yds is brutal. I know the obvious answer is lessons and practice, but that’s not realistic with two kids and a demanding job.

Will the Cleveland CBX’s or any other make a difference?

I say it's a toss up between either the CBX, and Ping Glide 2.0 Stealth. The CBX would likely be more forgiving and the Ping a more players shape and size. The Ping was found the best of all the wedges according to another websites testing

I appreciate your situation, but having a pro give you a short game tune-up would help you select the right wedges. The best wedge is one that delivers when you swing it properly.

I have a short game lesson every couple of years, and it usually helps me fine-tune things close in.

At a minimum you should be fit for wedges to figure out what type of sole design is best for you. Obviously lessons and practice would be better. Depending on if you are "digger" or "sweeper", the right sole design will help with your mishits.

All golf OEMs have good wedges these days, you just need the one that fits you best. No one on this forum is going to be able to answer this for you without knowing your swing.

I agree with this. You are asking about inside 50 yards. There’s not going to be much help in a cavity. Find your best sole grind and a setup that lets you hit the center of the face the most frequently.

OP, what are you playing now?

In short: If you want forgiveness at the bottom of the bag, pick a set style wedge for the GW, as most amateurs use this club for full swings more than anything else. For the remaining wedges, you have to pick them based on turf interaction and your style of play/swing. The wedge that gives you the best turf interaction will give you the best accuracy and ease of use. I cannot begin to stress this enough. It took me awhile to understand it, but when I did, my wedge game became a weapon instead of a liability.

Good luck!

A little more detail: The site which cannot be named just did a test... results were surprising.

I agree the CBX is easy as pie on full swings; my playing partner has two and you can miss the grooves all together and still get it there sometimes.

I had Mizuno S18s for a bit. They seemed to help on full swing misses out of center. The site that cannot be named agreed that this wedge appears to offer a bit of help off center.

I used to balk on vokeys, thinking they weren't going to offer help on my toe sided miss, but tbh the SM7 55 I have is really great on full swings, barring an absurd miss.

What I learned the hard way is that the most forgiving wedge is the one that has a sole that fits you just right. For me, I stayed with a set style wedge (AP2 50) where I'm going to be taking mostly full shots. From there, the S-Grind has been amazing for blending full shots and some versatility for pitching and chipping, especially with square face. The old school 12 bounce SM2 has been perfect in the lob.

The bounce and sole width is the biggest thing. I take decent divots with wedges and need it to cut the turf without digging. That means some bounce and a fairly thin sole that accelerates through.

I’ve been wedge freak ever since I started golfing (1989). Since, I’ve tried and owned just about every wedge. Best part of my game has/is the short game. I test alll the wedges that comes on the market. Last year, I tried CBX and bought one to tinker around with. Tried various different shaft and once I gotten used to it, I was blown away how forgiving they are. Now, I have a full set of them. Ay first, I hated the bounce options, but with little practice, I hit down on the ball little more taking good size divots. Ball spins more and it just goes where I aim. I never worry about digging, bounce works wonders and the grind is versatile. They are also great around the green side. Highly recommended. Ping Glide 2.0 is great wedge but not that forgiving compared to CBX.

I appreciate the response. I’ve tried everything and currently have MD3 56 W and a T7 56.14. I guess it’s all mental with me. I take excellent practice swings then have a mental breakdown on my actual shot. I have a tendency to dig or stab at the ball.

It’s frustrating because I play around a 6 handicap and just struggle with these shots. I was trying to see if the CBX or Glide 2.0 would make a difference.

Old Ping Eye 2’s can be quite versatile and found on eBay for pretty cheap. Loft options are limited but I’ve had good luck with the W and S covering my short game needs (50.5* and 57.5*)- this coming from a dude with three little kids and full time and part time job.

OP talking about 50 yards and in, so don't think (just being honest) a club is going to make that much difference. The term wedges, as in plural, makes me think, get one 58 or 60 that you like how it looks and feels - likely some type of blade - then just play it and you'll learn to use it well. If talking full swing from 50 yards where forgiveness might make a statistical difference, looking at a 64* ? I think maybe a sweet feeling forged blade might help you concentrate better, kind of like a new putter.

Expectations of a good wedge game, implies intrinsic feel or practice.

Even on chip, pitches around the green, 50 yards and in, we do hit off center.

Years ago I played with a neurosurgeon who had a horrible case of short game yips. He managed it by practicing and even playing pitches and chips one handed. I’m sure you’ll get it sorted out!

I've looked for the end of this quote and can't find it. If you could finish it, that'd be great.

I started with a 50* CBX as a gap wedge around this time last year. I liked it so much that I found excuses to use it even when another wedge would have been called for. By early spring I added a 56* and a 60* to the bag. I haven’t had any difficulty opening the face when necessary, and haven’t had any issues with the higher bounce on tighter lies, either. They are easy to hit little draws or fades with as well as the situation may require. Give them a shot.

I’m a teerrible wedge player from 115 yards in. I mean awful. I’m long and straight off the tee and a really solid iron striker that plays cobra amp cell pro irons and a pretty good putter. But I can’t hit a shot within 115 yards to save my life. Got myself the CBX 50/54/58 set up. Broke 80 all three rounds to end the season. Drained 3 short pitches from 60 plus yards with my 54. I have not drained a shot that far out in some 10 years. My full approaches with the 50 were all on the green. I’m super impressed.

I say again if you are buying GI irons, get them down to lob wedge. My ping G400 are far better than the Cleveland’s - I’m sure When I had Callaway XR those were great too. If you aren’t good enough to play specialist wedges, imho stick with the set till you are.

I'm not sure about this - some players are better at certain parts of the game than others. Might not be the case for the OP, but for some, mastering wedge play (and partial swings) is a lot easier than long or mid irons. I play GI irons, but have specialist SW/LW - I would agree with set PW/GW though for most mid/high cappers though.
