Ideas Wanted: January - Single - Stay+Play - Good Value

Recommended Posts

Kind of a "want to get away" trip. Just need to swing a club in warm weather.

Course conditions can be mediocre, but not goat ranch.

Lodging can be older, as long as it's clean.

I really want to stay onsite and just work on my game in some warm weather.

Been looking at a few places in Phoenix area. Other ideas welcome.

Arizona probably has tons more options, but check out some of the Palm Springs area hotels/resorts if that part of the country appeals to you - some have good prices in January (others pretty spendy), then it's a matter of finding places to play. Not sure about golf tie-ins, but I would imagine there are that time of year. Lots of good golf in the area and don't have to spend a lot of $. Only recommending because I used to go there once a year (free lodging!). Nice small airport, easy to get around town. Unfortunately, I never researched lodging or resorts when my parents were there, and now they won't be/haven't been, we've gone to California the past two winters for a short Irvine area stay (I know you've done that). Probably nowhere this winter, but toying with Monterey sometime in spring or summer '19 - family there with some real golf connections and have put off the trip way too long.

Kiawah does a great deal this time of year. We paid 1k for a week in a villa and two rounds on the Ocean course last year over New Years

The RTJ trail is $82 a day all you can play or $64/day for one round plus unlimited range time at that time of year.

Phoenix is generally going to be pricey. The weather in Alabama could be quite cold in January. Highs in Orlando are going to be 10 warmer on average. If you don't mind taking a chance on the weather, the Mobile, AL or Biloxi, MS areas have plenty of inexpensive golf.

Reunion Resort in Orlando isn't bad.

I was going to ask whether you meant southern cold for Alabama or real cold, but noticed you're from Chicago. :)

If it's a last minute trip I'd just be watching the forecasts for intended destinations and booking when I see a good window. I did that very thing this past spring.

I've been considering the same, although my wife wants to go, and I am thinking Vegas. Good rooms under a hundred bucks, but greens fees at Summerlin, Bali Hai, and Paiute are about 100 a piece. We have real inexpensive flights, too. I'm guessing there are cheaper greens fees those are just the three I want to see.

When you plan 4-5 ahead of time your #1 goal is to beat weather uncertainty. For that nothing better than Palm Springs or Phoenix. In both you’ll get cheap golf options but keep in mind PHX is wider area so if you choose Phoenix the cheap alternatives are in the manufacture homes heaven, Mesa. In PS because the area is not that big you could swing from one side to the other easily looking cheaper options, but the Indio area has the cheaper courses.

OP, what is your desired budget for this trip? Max price per night for hotel, will you be wanting to rent a car, max cost per round, etc.

This is a fair question that I struggle with. Let's say 7 nights, 5 rounds, all in for golf and hotel total of $1000.

I have points for up to five nights with a major hotel chain. Do you think I could go to their website and find a list of their properties with courses onsite? Nope! Grrr....

Do the courses need to be onsite?

I'll throw one out that might also work. Northern California. Join the NCGA for $70 and get a super discount at Poppy Hills ($250 -> $110) plus you can play Bayonet and Black Horse for a discount as well. Plenty of other options in that area as well and if you're in the hotel for free that makes it very doable budget wise.

I was trying to see what was available without a car except to-from airport. If I use my points, I might get the car, but I did find a few golf resorts with the chain that would accept my points. The courses are nondescript resort layouts, and that's OK. This isn't a bucket list trip. Just trying to get warm and bake in my new-to-me shallower, shorter swing I adapted late season.

The reputation of Poppy Hills, Bayonet and Black Horse is really tempting, though.

If you can swing it I'd go for it. I was there in September and had a blast. I also made a last minute call and played Pebble too. :)

-Palm springs isn't going to fit your budget IMO. rounds will be minimum $100 per and can get up near $200 if you don't plan well. Flights are going to be tough for direct as Palm springs is a small airport

-Phoenix isn't going to be easy either. I think the big issue you can have is crowded courses and price per round. best golf weather but everyone knows it and many live there for the 3-4 months of winter

-Florida and the surrounding area's are likely your best bang for the buck. Better hotel deals (if you don't get a free stay) and tons of courses where you can get golfnow deals on nice ones. Flights will also be cheapest likely from where you are. My guess is Orlando will have some very cheap flights.

- Southern California will be out of budget, San Diego, Orange county ect.

Totally wrong. Quick search of a number of courses shows you can play for well under $100, if that is the price point someone is looking for, I can get a January tee time at PGA West right now for $60. Now some of those are early morning, some are later in the day, so getting done could be an issue which is why some really nice courses have really low prices after a certain time of day, but plenty of others are "normal" times at a variety of courses, and you can tie in with a resort stay as well. We played a lot of good courses for a lot of years and some not as "good", lol, and price wasn't much of an issue. Want to play Indian Wells or some courses at peak times, yep, going to cost you, but lots of under $100 golf options, again, if under $100 is what you are looking for.

How are flights "tough" into Palm Springs? It's a popular destination and the size of the airport has little to do with it. Pretty easy to find a way to get there from almost anywhere. Easy destination. Depending on dates, OP could fly out of Madison, WI (example) for $331 in January. Flying direct - really not a big deal if you have a stop in Vegas, Denver, you name it.

Weather is subjective. You are always rolling the dice in January. It’s a percentage thing. If you want at least 65 and sunny with at least a 80 percent chance, it’s FL, AZ, or maybe SoCal.

Look at World Woods. No onsite housing options, but there are stay and play packages well within budget. Car rental would be a possible deal breaker there. But there are 2 great courses and really good practice areas. No nightlife, so if you want that you have to go to Tampa.

+1 to everyone suggesting World Woods. I went there two years ago at the same time I'm going now. Great complex and my hotel was about 10 minutes away.

Just trying to find someplace where I can stay with golf onsite. Closest I've found so far is two properties in my hotel chain in Phoenix area.

If you pick the perfect week in January you could possibly do this. But courses are still going to be 50 more than florida and flights will still be $200 more round trip. Look at next week and hot deals for decent courses in Palm springs are $70-$120. plus a more realistic number for a round trip flight is in the $400 range, add golf bag fee/ luggage fee and you are close to $500. Rent a car $150 for 7 days with a good deal. Food and you have another $100 if you eat really cheap. There is no way you do a good golf trip for 5 or more days around 1k.

Not sure this in your budget but this has

A) Maybe the best public practice facility in Socal

B) Casino

C) If you can find a buddy its $200 a person for hotel, two rounds on pristine course and unlimited practice facility use.

Random round trip to LAX from Madison is under 300$ in January.

Great course, one of the best in southern California. His budget is hoping to be around 1k and The journey is one of the priciest courses in that area. Plus LAX is likely 1.5 to 2 hour drive to get there.

If you pick ANY week in January $100 isn't the minimum you play to play golf in the Palm Springs area. And no, as I told you the actual flight was $331, why make up "$400 range"?

Look, I'm not going to side track the thread arguing with you and I'm not pushing any destination, but let's keep to the real numbers.

I don't think Palm Springs fits with his parameters and plenty of other options and looking forward to where he decides to go and a full report.
