Warm-up Routine

Hey y'all,

Looking for a warm-up routine you follow with your kids before hitting balls. The boy does some stretches he has learned from school and from a fitness coach but I'm not sure it's as effective or comprehensive as it should be.

My warm-up routine before hitting balls consists solely of bending over to tie my shoes so I'm not an expert that should be giving advice.

Thanks!

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

We see a personal trainer who has a lot top athletes and golfers. He is very big on using Foam Rollers to roll muscles out like triggerpoint foam rollers or sklz roller stick. They seem to work well and she uses them before and after hitting balls or working out. I believe she also does some other stretches with her back and legs but I will have to ask her to describe them correctly.

When we get to the course, the first thing we work on is putting. I spend about 20 minutes working on various distances to get her speed down. Then we hit some chips for about 10-15 minutes. After that we hit the range and spend about 15 minutes there. We start off with a few wedges and work on tempo. Then she usually hits a few balls with one iron (8 or 9) a few balls with a hybrid or fairway wood, and then a few with a driver. My guess is we probably hit about 15 balls total. Then right before we go off we hit the putting green one last time. Usually we just work 5 footers and then go to the tee.

We throw the football around- I am serious. We bring to tmnts and practice. He doesn’t even realize my purpose of warming him up, but he’s out running slants and posts and throwing to me too - way more fun for him than doing arm circles and toe touches. it does the trick. Not to mention it lightens the mood a bit on Tmnt days where he might be a little nervous. He probably loves football more than golf anyway. He then goes into a pretty structured and set routine of hitting balls, but the football helps get him loose and warm.

When we are home on the range we throw the football all the time to warm up. Trying to teach him to throw better left handed.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

Stretch, a few shots with 8 iron and a few shots with driver. Then we’ll hit some shots we expect to have at the round (e.g., par 3 clubs off the tee or hybrid and fairway wood into par 5s). End with some wedges (full and in between) and back to driver. Usually takes 20 minutes. Putt/chip for 15 minutes. Love the football idea to get loose, however.

When it comes to warming up with the clubs before a tournament, my son typically spends a few minutes putting first (5-8 minutes), then goes to the range starts with SW and then 9 iron, 7 iron, 5 iron and 3 iron, then hits some 3-woods and then drivers and then takes a SW and hits pitches/longer chips (more feel type shots) - probably 25-30 minutes taking his time - then goes to do some chipping (10 minutes or so) and then putts until he needs to go over to the 1st tee. Overall, we like to show up about 75 minutes or so before his tee time so things aren't rushed (need to be sure to have time for a snack/bathroom break/etc as well).

If the course where the tournament is does not have a grass range or the grass part is closed, we will go to a nearby course with a grass range for warm up and then head over to the tournament course for putting - so I always call in advance in case we have to give more time to get to/from a grass range.
