Official STRESS Management Thread - tricks, tips, what's worked for you?

Ok, I've got a lot to say on the subject and thought it would be nice to get others input who have high stress jobs and family lives and how they cope with them. I'll post in detail later today. I just wanted to get the ball rolling while I was thinking about it. Please chime in if you have some tips or need help with anything stress related.

Surprised this thread didnt go anywhere. I guess for most of us, getting on the course is #1.

For myself, I know I absolutely have to get into a gym every couple days and just move my body. Especially when the golf season is done. Some sunrise duck hunting is good for,the aoukd but not so good for the sleep schedule.

In order from best to worst:

1) Remove the work stress somehow

2) Do something productive away from golf and family to distract your mind. Work out, walk, golf, etc.

3) Alcohol or other drugs

I personally pick a combination of all 3 to different degrees. When I can't do #1 or #2, I do more of #3, which isn't healthy. Currently working on doing #1, which will also allow more time for #2. No poop jokes allowed.

I’ve been struggling pretty big the last 10 months with anxiety/depression. Still haven’t found the best stress management technique

Exercise.

Don't sweat the small stuff.

Count your blessings.

Sometimes we need to work on a fresh perspective, too.

As I've aged, I've gotten better at not worrying so much about things that are out of my control, which is nice.

15 years ago my life was in turmoil, and stress was the order of the day. I started going for long walks in a nearby park, wearing headphones and listening to music when my head was spinning, or going without to take in the sounds of nature when my head was clear. The walking eventually evolved into running, and I ran dozens of races for several years. The walking/running gave me a chance to leave the stress behind in a positive way, if only for a few hours, and gave me something to look forward to.

Running may not be your thing-maybe music, gardening, painting, etc. You need something to take your mind off your problems, and give you something to look forward to.

Ive found being in better shape helps. Im not sure there's documentation for this but I would think having a lower heart rate and not being tired helps with stress. I definitely feel better now than I did when I was out of shape. I have an easier time staying calm. I jog and exercise every day

I wouldn't recommend excessive drinking LoL. But a couple of glasses of wine or a scotch sometimes is nice after a crappy day.

For me it's the 'being tired' after workouts that is key. Having an exhausted body helps keep the night gremlins thoughts away.

And also, I wonder if you all do this: when I lay down, I start visualizing my last round, or my last best round. I try to remember as much detail as possible, on every shot. It's so much work that I rarely, make it past a few holes before drifting off.

Yeah that's a pretty common sleep technique, in some variation or another. Ive done it with golf for sure. Other stuff too

Ive found being in shape helps so much away from the gym too though. Like I go to meetings where guys are huffing and puffing after walking up stairs LoL. They always seem to get annoyed faster. Or at conferences where you're running around and by the 3pm meetings some guys are ready to snap. I have pretty much unlimited energy right now.

I renovated my house last year and basically lugged flooring and drywall around all day for my contractor . I think he was surprised I was happy to do all this stuff LoL. It was relaxing actually cause I was getting my workout in

I think of the story Fehrety tells. Something to the effect of: I birdie 1 and 2, I’m on my way to the course record. Then, I hook my ball into thick rough on 3 and spend all night looking for my ball.

Had a closed MRI on my back a few years ago. Playing 18 in my head was the only way I could get through the claustrophobia. It worked.

Unbelievably, they didn't mention the horrible sound it would make so at first I thought the machine was imploding.... like my game.

Yep, I also run through rounds sometimes to sleep... and melatonin.

The key to reducing stress is to avoid or eliminate the source. I don't have statistical support, but just anecdotal evidence of being 55 yrs old and having many friends, family, and associates over the years but my theory still stands....75% of stress is self-induced, usually by bad choices or compounding of small bad choices.

1.Meditate- Helpful little app called Headspace if you are new to meditating and it takes like 10-20min/day

2.Exercise

3.Begin everyday by writing down at least 3 things you are grateful for- Since we all have the time/resources to spend on WRX then we have PLENTY to be grateful for.

4Learn to respond to life events instead of react- There is a HUGE difference

5.Dont watch the news...

6.Read a book or if you are like me and not good at reading get Audible and listen to a book. Surprising how many people dont take advantage of learning from other peoples mistakes.

I have been dealing more on the depression side.......but I have read a few books lately that have given me a different outlook on things and have really helped my well being. It sounds silly, but it was nice to hear stories of other people who have felt what I am feeling

Exercise is a good idea, but don't go overboard or you may feel even worse. When I joined a cycling club, I felt pretty burnt out and stressed after every ride. Then I learned you need to go hard about once a week, and light most other days. It was then I understood how exercise could feel good.
