I just got back from Jacksonville, and I added TPC Sawgrass Player's Stadium (#51/#12) to the list. While it's always fun to tee it up where the pros play, I believe it's a bit overrated at #12 on the public list. I'd place it in the #25 to #30 range. Based on value, it drops near the bottom , as it's just not close to a $500 course. $250? OK, now we're in the ballpark.

There are some places where Golf Magazine clearly gets it right, and one could see how the "Resistance to Scoring" metric cost a course its spot (Eastward Ho!), but a lot of the "left off by Golf Digest" courses actually scored well enough in Resistance to Scoring to make the list (East Lake, Hazeltine, Cal Club, Bellerive, Pasatiempo, Torrey Pines, Streamsong, etc.).

 

It's in style to say that the "resistance to scoring" category creates bias in the GD list...but the data doesn't bear it out (at least from a who's in and who's out perspective...it does have a real impact in position on the list).

These lists are all 100% biased and almost 100% subjective. They all use different criteria. So depending on what criteria they choose to use (and one's choices are as good as another). There is no correct criteria.

 

The fact that two lists are 70% the same is interesting and expected. Most of us have similar criteria for determining what courses we like.

 

Maybe somebody has developed a "criteria comparison" between Golf Digest, Golf, Golf Week and "Top 100 Golf Courses" or others with published ratings.

Our panelists play and score courses on seven criteria:

SHOT VALUES

How well do the holes pose a variety of risks and rewards and equally test length, accuracy and finesse?

RESISTANCE TO SCORING

How difficult, while still being fair, is the course for a scratch player from the back tees?

DESIGN VARIETY

How varied are the holes in differing lengths, configurations, hazard placements, green shapes and green contours?

MEMORABILITY

How well do the design features provide individuality to each hole yet a collective continuity to the entire 18?

AESTHETICS

How well do the scenic values of the course add to the pleasure of a round?

CONDITIONING

How firm, fast and rolling were the fairways, how firm yet receptive were the greens and how true were the roll of putts on the day you played the course?

AMBIENCE

How well does the overall feel and atmosphere of the course reflect or uphold the traditional values of the game?

To arrive at a course's final score, we total its averages in the seven categories, doubling Shot Values. A course needs 45 evaluations over the past eight years to be eligible for America's 100 Greatest and the Second 100 Greatest.

 

 

Golf Magazine (golf.com) - GOLF Magazine’s biennial Top 100 Courses in the World Rankings are determined by a 100-strong international panel whose members include major-championship winners, architects, journalists and a cadre of connoisseurs who have played all of the world’s top 100 courses. Panelists evaluate a ballot of 493 courses. Although there are no set-in-stone criteria they must follow, we have confidence in their sense of what constitutes “greatness” in a course. You could do the same, not particularly hard to get on the list above other than CPC, if you are a member of a private club, liberally participate in charity auctions and aren’t a jerk when you play with others. I”m always glad to host people or donate to charity when able as golf is certainly a social exercise not a solitary one IMO.
