Please recommend an old school driver that can still keep up today!

When I was younger, and longer off the tee, the longest drives of my life were with the 510tp.

I recall having some local members come up to me after my round at Shaughnessy GC in the CDN Am and were amazed at where my drives ended up. I recall that day and on two converted par 5's to par 4's (they converted the course from 73 to 70) ... #1 and #10 I hit PW and 8i in respectively. Good lord, that was 2003, 15 summers ago. I did the Am in 2001 and then the back surgeries in 2004 were the end of the fast Uncle Cardy swing

The main differences I see between today's drivers and the "Old" ones is the MOI and the spin they produce in relation to their loft. No one will argue that the MOI of today's heads beats the smaller old heads. But if you compare center strikes, it's a different story. I have several 975 LFE drivers of varying lofts and shafts. When comparing my 9.5* 975LFE (GD YS-8.1 mid-launch) to my current drivers set to 9.5*, the current models have a lower launch, less spin and go farther. However, if I take my 7.5* 975 LFE (Matrix HD8 low-launch) and compare it to my current drivers at 9.5*, things get a lot closer. Perhaps those doing these tests should get heads that give similar launch conditions instead of similar specs?

If you want to go hardcore oldski, J's Professional Weapon. Assuming you can stand the super small size, that is.

I'm also tempted to suggest a sleeper... one of the Ping laminate drivers. My longest drive of the last three years is with a Zing Blonde with KT-M shaft. I've driven a shortish par 4 with a King LTD, SLDR, SuperDeep, and none of them could yet equal the Zing Blonde tee shot I hit in 2016.

Yes, it's the ultimate in small sample size theater, but.... :pimp:

A more "normal" suggestion would be an R510 or R540, maybe an R9. <shrug>

The question is WHY?

Putting together a semi semi vintage bag, need a driver to go along with Tommy Armour Silver Scot 845 Irons, crazy yes. I don't even remember what drivers I was using when I was playing these irons in the early 90s. Possibly a Powerbilt Persimmon Citation, Original Big Bertha, Taylor Made Burner, Great Big Bertha which are all obsolete now.

May look into the 910D3, I remember liking that driver.

I have this TA Beta Ti sitting in the closet simply because I liked the finish on it so much..lol. It sits there quietly with a 983K H-Cr (illegal for anything other than pure recreational play of course) which has one of the original Ion finish Diamana Red Flowerband shafts. Both of these still fair well when I take them out just for kicks. In fact, that Diamana shaft is still so good I have often thought about pairing it with a more modern head to see what it could do.

Current Driver 915D3 - Diamana white board 70S 45", D2swing weight

last minute golf Friday no clubs just back up set i my office.

07 Burner - Stock ReAX TP 65 stiff- Cut to 43" D2 swing weight.

I drove the ball exceptionally well (driver is usually the weakest part of my game) BUT a specified hole #14 i generally take a smash at it, The longest I have hit was probably as solid 270 total distance.... Fridays with the 07burner 278 yards.

Not ultra long but the point is that a 43" cut down driver, from 2006 can go JUST as for as a full length 45" 2014 Driver. 8 years in tech between the 2, but netted gains was negligible.

I still bag my 2004 Cleveland Launcher from time to time and lose very little. My modern (2016) driver is a little more forgiving if you miss the centre of the clubface but that's about it. In 18 holes I reckon bagging the old driver costs me zero strokes.

Adams 9016D,......"Uhhhhhh,.....ball speed".

Or 9015d as below...

Maybe it's not really old enough to be truly old school... but it'll raise a 'how old is that' eyebrow, and ( assuming you don't suffer frm a slice ) not just keep up... but destroy any modern, adjustable doodaddded latest flavour of the month.

I really ought to get another shaft for it... my lovely. ;-)

Every year I demo 5-6 of the new drivers. I always say I'll pay up to $1000 if any of them can beat out my current driver. Every year they fail. My Taylormade Superfast Burner TP from 2010 is still in the bag and still getting me the best distance and accuracy. And i still say it's the ugliest driver ever made...

As stated above, any driver engineered with any competency can get you a 1.50 smash factor when hit in the absolute dead center of gravity, As a Demo Day fitter, I occasionally come across a player that will hit something like an old Burner Driver as far as my newest. I assume it's because he has grooved his swing so that he hits it in the center consistently with it and may not with the new model. (I didn't have one of those this year where I could have seen the hit location on the updated Trackman program and I never set out to investigate it with face tape before). But, what newer clubs will do is produce higher ball speeds (higher smash factors) over a larger area of the face, that is, there is less drop off of ball speed as you move away from the center of gravity. That's the advantage for the average golfer who will miss the absolute center consistently (as well as higher MOI and adjustability to influence Launch Angles, Launch Direction, and spin rate) Remember too, hit location influences spin rates and spin axis, more so on drivers with lower MOI.

I took my ideal target from the Glfwrx study from a couple of years ago shooting for around 12.5 Launch and 2700 cycles of spin for the average golfer with around a 95mph swing.. Since most players swing from out to in, I had a hard time trying to get them under 3500 until some of the newer models from the last 3 years. I seem to achieve those numbers routinely now.

Two years ago when Epic came out, I went to our clubs doing the "Epic Challenge" where you hit you driver (however old) then let me tweak an Epic a bit for you and see which one was longer. I was 111-6 over the course of the Spring.
