2019 Bag Is Set Challenge

Dan Drake

Recommended Posts

It's that time of year again!! How long into the new calendar year can you last without changing clubs in and out of the bag?

Predictably, last year, most of us failed, often spectacularly. Our 2018 "first place" fail was on Jan. 3rd, which was 2.5 days longer than our "winner" from 2017!!! The next wave seemed to come at around the 10 day mark, so I advise this year's contestants to put Jan. 10 on the calendar and just don't go anywhere near anything golf-ish on that day! Once again, the vast majority of the casualties happened about a month in, for whatever reason, so do what you have to do during that time as well. Personally, I'm going to look for a sponsor! And once again, Mych was easily the best/worst follow through the journey. He was honest, open, persistent, and yet completely and totally doomed all at the same time!!!

All in good fun fellas, I bowed out laughably after just one month and 5 days this past year, worsening my performance from 2017 by exactly a week. 27 holes was all I made it through. 27 stinkin' holes. Awful. I'm not sure if anyone actually who "entered" actually made it through 2018 and into immortality by keeping the entire bag set, but we all really know that isn't the point! :cheesy:

Anyhow, Here are the rules for 2019's "Bag is Set" club:

1. You must set your bag BEFORE your first golf-like activity of 2019. First round, first range trip, first trip to the practice green, first session hitting balls in your $2,800 garage simulator setup, whatever. Post your full bag setup in this thread to "set" your bag.

2. Put your bag in the post on this thread before you engage in that first golf-like activity of the year. It doesn't have to be on Jan. 1, but posting it in the middle of June just isn't really in the spirit of this whole fiasco. Also, posting "See sig" in a post doesn't work for this Challenge because the signature can change without record. Please, no editing your original post either. We need hard evidence, people!

3. Grips and specs are the only thing that may be changed throughout the year. You may adjust lofts, lies, swing weights, MOI, paintfill, etc. and you may replace/change grips. But, no new heads, shafts, 15th clubs, etc. It's supposed to be a challenge!

4. There is no fame, fortune, and very little glory for completing this challenge, at least none that I'm aware of. In fact, now that I think about it, ridicule will be the most likely result, win or lose.

5. Check back in if (when) you change something. It's part of the fun!

Decisions on the Rules by the Committee (me, lol!) - a. You may replace a broken club with a new/different club, but you may NOT intentionally break a club, just so you can replace it, lol! b. All wagers placed on the 2019 BIS Challenge shall be paid in full. Failure to do so will result in permanent banning from all future BIS Challenges!

As is my custom, I will be waiting until 1/1/19 to officially post my bag. Honestly though, that doesn't matter a hill of beans, as it is the exact bag I have now and the exact bag I'm going to wreck as soon as Callaway comes out with the Epic Flash fairways (and probably the PM Grind 2.0 wedges as well)!!!

I am not sure I even mess with the Flash driver, although pretty likely I at least demo it.

My custom Odyssey is getting redone right now, that may be it, but will hold off posting bag yet, still have some time....

Ok who am I kidding...I started typing my bag from my signature and then realized I already have a request to preorder with my custom club builder for the Feb launch Mizuno ST190G, 190 3 and 5 woods, and maybe the JPX forged Utility or a Mizuno HMPro 4 Iron...

I am going to just be realistic and stay out.

Why do I do this to myself?

2019 Bag:

Driver: TaylorMade M6 is on order. Hopefully will be here late Jan.

3 Wood: TaylorMade M4 3HL (arrived today). Gotta figure out shaft before end of year.

Irons: Mizuno MMC Fli-Hi 3, JPX 919 Tour 4-PW

Wedges: TaylorMade MG Black 52 and 58

Putter: TaylorMade TP Black Copper Mullen 2

I will update shaft in 3 HL before end of this year and call my bag set. I don't have a driver in the bag right now so I'll fill that slot as soon as the M6 gets here. Not sure if that DQs me or not.

By far my favorite thread for the last 2 years running. I feel very confident with my bag, but I'm still going to wait until closer to 2019 to actually post it.

The single-length iron set that caused my demise last year is still in the bag, and everything else has been rebuilt around it so unless that changes I should be able to hang in there for a while this time.

I do have a question for clarification...

What is the rules interpretation for testing non-gamer clubs at the driving range or practice green, but not making a change to your gamers? For instance, if I take 3-4 drivers or putters out to test but decide that my gamer is still my gamer, is that a violation? I think that it has been deemed ok to demo a new club as long as no change is made, but I didn't know if that's just for a golf-store demo or if that includes re-demoing stuff that I already own, lol.

Good question (I told you folks he was the Most Interesting BIS'er in the World): Testing, demoing, ogling, and all other manner of personal mental abuse are permitted. We are WRX'ers and human, after all!

But, when you hit that first tee shot of your round, what you have in your bag either fits the challenge, or doesn't, plain and simple.

p.s. I like that you said we're WRX'ers ahead of being human. My wife would concur with that as the correct order.

I'm sorry, but the bag has to stay the same. No swapping in and out drivers, 2 irons for 5 woods, or putters based on which one is acting right. Again, I apologize, but if that is "allowed" (I'm laughing as I type that word!), then anyone can justify any changing of the bag. It would be anarchy, I tell you!

I will post on Jan 1 however I’m in a pickle as I now own 2&3 hybrids. Five wood has always been a fixture so I can win only if you will allow 16 clubs. Didn’t that change in the rules from Jan too ?

16 clubs also isn't allowable, for the above reasons. In no way do I look down upon your preferred way to play the game, but for the purposes of this admittedly foolish exercise, 14 is the maximum.
