What clubs do you generally chip/pitch with green side?

50* or PW.

Gary player and Jack Nicklaus both said the goal is to get the ball onto the green enrolling as fast as possible. I'm pretty sure they used 8-PW mostly to chip.

We should probably take what Gary and Jack used in their prime with a grain of salt. The advice is still appropriate, but the club choices these days tend to be more high lofted wedges because of the much faster green speeds. Green speeds in the 60s and 70s rarely got much above 8 on the stimp. Even in the 80s green speeds were just beginning to reach double digit stimp except for a few places of note (Oakmont, Augusta, etc...).

Let me clarify I personally use a PW or my 50*.

In regards to Nicklaus and Player, it doesn't really matter on green speed. Their main advise was to keep it low and get it rolling on the green and almost treat it like a putt (using the break).

I understand. Their advice is still very applicable. I just doubt they would use 8-PW as much today as they did in their prime.

You can take Gary and Jack's advice if you want to play like an old man on you local muni's shag rug of a putting surface.

Tiger is my GOAT and he said, "chicks dig spin." This has to be the biggest fallacy of a quote as 99.9% of women simply do not dig golf or golfers, but you get the idea.

Truly, as a younger player I used the different short irons as a chipping club, now I hood a 60 for just about everything. It's super hard to control spin but if you play it in the middle somewhere between zipper and none you leave yourself a lot of short putts which is the goal.

Been using my T7 60-14 exclusively around the greens for winter golf. The ground conditions is very soggy and the greens are so soft it’s like throwing darts to 5 feet every time.

Just learned that additional bounce is my friend.

There is no way I can go lower than my 56-10 with ground conditions being soft and also, the green so inconsistent for rolling the ball; chunk every time with anything less than my SW.

It totally matters on green speeds dude. That was his point. Super fast greens with undulations, plateuas and more psycho tucked pins...good luck hitting running chips you’d have to judge it perfectly, it’s harder in many circumstances. Far easier to throw it in the air and check it for a lot of green side shots, it’s the higher % play. That’s why it’s refreshing to play links where you can actually use the ground. There are too many courses that have made bump n runs nearly obsolete. Of course it’s easier to make good contact but that doesn’t promise the best result.

You need skill with a 55-60* wedge or youre just throwing away shots if you play all the courses North America has to offer. No chance you could survive/shoot lowest possible scores with bump n run only

Taking it in high with a lot of spin is like a guitar solo. Too much of a good thing is inevitably a bad thing, if you know what I mean ;)

Pitches and chip are so much fun. You have to have skills and courage. I always consider the bogey already made when I miss a green in reg. or really even if I hit it but miss by 30+ feet. That way there's no pressure, worst case scenario is a bogey unless you've really put it in a weird place. I think taking the pressure off frees me up to take a better cut at the ball. Same with the putt. Don't ever expect to make anything. Just step up and give it the best roll you can and then you're pleasantly surprised if you hear the golden sound.

However much I love the game, I'm a pretty awful golfer because I don't play much. I've found that the highest loft I can rely on for routine shots is my 54* so I don't go above that unless I'm using a 58* or 60* out of sand or to clear a hazard. Most reliable is the 7 iron from my Speedblades and that plays a lot of shots. I have a couple of other wedges I like, a Bridgestone forged J36 9 iron and a KZG forged 50*. They come out sometimes. Key for me is simple and reliable - I can't do that with a 58* alas.

As others have said I too like to get my ball rolling as early as possible. Skulling my lob wedge from the fringe achieves this effectively however distance control is not what it could be.

If your using wedges, that must mean a really nice amount of grass holding the ball up. Where I am playing, grass is in short demand, mostly mud and bare lies, and that 60* wedge is going over the green when you skull it. I have to treat my irons like a putter to get it on the green. I am going to put the Cleveland chipper back in the bag to putt green side shots.

I will somewhat tend to agree but will add there are some subtitle differences of how one was taught. If one practices they can adjust to speed just like in putting. It also has a lot to do with what one is confident in doing. Myself I always devoted 80 % of my time to short game practice and can do both bump and run and flop. Lately since I have gotten older and do not practice as much I tend to use the bump and run quite a bit

Shiat in older days they use 6 irons, 4 irons, and anything in between.....

More loft, softer greens and a balata ball too...not to mention sand wedge was fairly new and no lob wedges.....seems even tour pros are using more loft than pros used too....

Both are effective and whatever your used to and consistent with

My local course greens are usually around 12 on stimp and very steep

For me it really depends on lie and what shot calls for. Too many variables and pin placement makes a difference. Not much green to work with it might be 58 depending on lie. If lie is in think rough (northern courses) or on an up slope probably 54 or 50. Green to play with and good lie might be PW. Too many variables.

Just got back from Florida and courses I played were over seeded with Rye and tight lies. Ended up migrating to my 50 and 54. Just not enough bounce on 58.

Fun thing about golf is creativity it allows. Get ball close to pin...doesn’t matter how you do it. Side not, down south putting is a great option off the green. Shouldn’t over look it. Can almost never do it on the courses I play in Ohio.

52 was the best I've ever used but I've had to go away from that setup so now use my 50 mostly. 52 was an easy up and down so definitely missing that club.

yeah LOL sure thing.... Or Bobby Jones' advice... or, we could take YOUR advice... hmmm

What do you figure a green stimped when Bobby Jones was dominant?

According to this article, in 1937 when the Stimpmeter was invented, the average green stimped at a 2.5.

https://www.gcmonline.com/course/environment/news/green-speed-history

You can do whatever you like, and take whomever's advice you like, but I rarely see an accomplished player play a shot around the green with less loft than a Gap Wedge. Maybe a runner straight up a slope. I learned to chip with all my clubs 25 years ago, but I were starting over I'd probably learn 3 or 4 shots with each of my wedges with the goal of progressing to hitting 95% of my shots with my most lofted wedge. That's a 60* for me during the normal golf season and a 56* all winter.

Shortly after posting this thread, I changed up my clubs I carry to the green side. When I first started to golf, I used to carry sandwedge and 8 iron, but somewhere down the line, I only carried 50 and 58. Now, I carry 9 and 58. I am chipping much better these days.
