Please recommend an old school driver that can still keep up today!

Have to agree with the older TM models - r510TP, 07 Burner TP, and my personal favorite, the r5 Dual TP. That thing was point and shoot! I also love that any of these drivers can be had right now for less than $75. Playable golf equipment is only expensive if one demands brand new and "cutting edge" haha! (No offense to anyone who would)

Man you guys are hitting my nostalgia button. I had a 910D2 with a Matrix X-Con 6 and I can't remember a time when I hit it as good. I gave it to my brother who lost it/sold it years ago but I found the 910D sock headcover in a box I was looking through just the other day...I honestly think I still play Titleist drivers to this day because of how good that one was. The 913 was very good too as is my TS3, but that 910/Matrix combo will forever be my favorite.

I do quite a few of these comparisons on trackman during the winter months. The ones that can still hang, that Ive tested recently are,

282 Superquad, r510tp, superfast tp long hosel, r11 dot,983e and K, 905r, ping I15,r7 425tp, 910 d2 and 3. All of these heads can still bang.

You covered a lot of years there. So basically what you're saying, is anything that was designed at the legal limit for spring face, that fits the given player....

I'm with you

The main differences I see between today's drivers and the "Old" ones is the MOI and the spin they produce in relation to their loft. No one will argue that the MOI of today's heads beats the smaller old heads. But if you compare center strikes, it's a different story. I have several 975 LFE drivers of varying lofts and shafts. When comparing my 9.5* 975LFE (GD YS-8.1 mid-launch) to my current drivers set to 9.5*, the current models have a lower launch, less spin and go farther. However, if I take my 7.5* 975 LFE (Matrix HD8 low-launch) and compare it to my current drivers at 9.5*, things get a lot closer. Perhaps those doing these tests should get heads that give similar launch conditions instead of similar specs?

BT

Solid point. Back in the day when someone needed lower spin, we went down in the loft. Plenty of guys were playing "7.5" stamped heads with no problems. Granted, the actual measured lofts were higher than that.

Can't really compare "apples to apples", without knowing what the actual lofts are

Pretty much from all my testing yes.

All of these heads put up similar numbers to my epic, f8plus,m2 t.i and m3. Find the one you like the look of and feel of and get after it. The gem of the bunch that I compared was the 905r i can squeeze a little more out of this head probably because the shape and feel are perfect for me.

What about the R9?

Original R9 is a very good option. Has the "Triangular" shape that TM was into in that time frame. Is "low spin" compared to some other designs around then. I liked the original better than the "R9 460" and Super-tri

Bonus is that you can get adaptors relatively inexpensive, to have several shaft options for testing purposes....or whatever

Adams 9016D,......"Uhhhhhh,.....ball speed".

Or 9015d as below...

Maybe it's not really old enough to be truly old school... but it'll raise a 'how old is that' eyebrow, and ( assuming you don't suffer frm a slice ) not just keep up... but destroy any modern, adjustable doodaddded latest flavour of the month.

I really ought to get another shaft for it... my lovely. ;-)

Yep, 9015D gets it done all day erry day!!! I played the other day with mine and it held its own compared to my G400 LST 8.5 & M3 8.5, easily!

I still bag my 2004 Cleveland Launcher from time to time and lose very little. My modern (2016) driver is a little more forgiving if you miss the centre of the clubface but that's about it. In 18 holes I reckon bagging the old driver costs me zero strokes.

Cleveland Launcher, what a great driver.

I still break mine out from time to time, don’t feel like I lose a thing. So true to its name.

I had the Launcher 330, 400, and 460. I got better results with the 400 and 460. Launcher 460 and the R9 460 just felt great.

The TM R7 was pretty good in it's day with the right shaft as was the Titleist 905. I hit my R7 this year and still got some impressive drives from it...

Yep, the R7 was a good release.

I tried to upgrade from the 400 to the R9 460. The 460 gave me some epically long drives but i couldn’t control it for anything, long before I knew anything about shafts. So good though.

I have a TaylorMade RBZ Stage 2 with 10.5* of loft that is in my bag.... I have tested it against every Callaway and M-series TaylorMade and none have come within 12 yards of my RBZ in total distance. The launch and spin are just absolutely perfect for me so I will keep using it until something comes along that tests better. BTW, I sent it to Continental Golf last year to have them make it matter black along with my RBZ Stage 2 three wood and hybrid. All three of the RBZ's are in my bag and will stay there until something tests better.

Yeah, tm 580xd and 540 were terrific, not sure as long those an M2. Tm Rbz definitely longer than those that came b4. Callaway FT-9 and tho different, Xtreme.

Never felt the Titleist were ever longest and none of 910-915.

TM SLDR just as long as latest TM drivers....see Shields vid.
