Forgiving wedges- CBX, etc...

I'm looking for any feedback on wedges. I've read countless threads and tried multiple techniques, but my wedge game inside 50 yds is brutal. I know the obvious answer is lessons and practice, but that's not realistic with two kids and a demanding job.

Will the Cleveland CBX's or any other make a difference?

Lefty - the absolute best thing you can do is to get a wedge with high bounce (think about 14* of bounce on a 56*) and play just one wedge for all your shots 50 yards and in. When I was developing my game, I started out hitting everything with a PW until I knew I needed another club. So when that happened, I added a 56* and played everything with that (more like 100 in for me). Then at some point I decided I needed a 60*. Well I wasn't ready for that right then, but the Eye 2+ 58* really worked for me, along with the 53* SW. So now-a-days I still play PW, 54/60 (or 58). But I can't say enough about playing high bounce when you are still working on your ballstriking and touch. I know that sounds a little boring - hitting a 56* for absolutely everything but it'll force you to learn many different shots with just the one club and you'll really come to trust and love that wedge over time. Add a gap and/or a lob when you know when you are ready for it in a year or two.

If I had to guess it’s a shaft issue. Try something with a flex softer then your irons. This will allow you to hold onto the lag better.

CBX would be good. A local clubfitter suggests the model to all undecided golfers.

You might also try the RTX wedges. An RTX.3 cluster (now on clearance) would work nicely if you could still find right loft mix.

So, here’s an update. I purchased the CBX 54* wedge and was able to hit it at the range and try it around the chipping green a few times. I realize that most issues for my short game is mental and bad technique, but I was looking for something that may help and I believe the CBX is potentially that club. I recently realized the heavier stock DG shafts in wedges were not a good fit. I play PX LZ 5.5 in the JPX 900 and could tell the difference with the stock DG 115 in the CBX.

For full and 3/4 shots the CBX is an extension of my 50* gap wedge (JPX 900). I set up to a flag at 98 yds and just hit stock shots that went at the flag. Shots stayed on target and were pretty much point and shoot. I tried some with the Mizuno T7 54/14 and MD3 56 W, but they just seeed to be much more work, probably the shaft.

Chipping around the green was much better for me than the T7 or MD3. I like the extra bounce and I changed my stance/swing and it really helped with the performance. The CBX is has a bigger profile, but I actually like that compared to the T7 and MD3.

I’m going to see how it performs on the course and I may go with the 58* or the RTX 4 in the 58*.

I play a CBX 48*. I don't have a GW that goes with my 565s so the CBX works great. I used my GW for mostly full shots so I wanted something that would be fluid with the set. It's a little less versatile than what I'd like around the greens, but I'd rather have full confidence on a short approach, and then use it as a point and shoot for chips and pitches.

I’ve tried Vokeys, Callaway MD3, older Cleveland CB wedges and felt like a hack with them all. When the CBX came out I picked up a 56*. Its been a game changer for me. I was always looking for the next gimmicky club like a Niblick, Chipper, etc and while those were useful I found them one dimensional. The CBX is great for chipping, full shots, partial pitches etc.

I play the ball back in my stance and trap it and it works well.

I have the RTX-3 CB model and like them. I have a 52, 56, and 60, all in the Mid-Grind. I use them for anything inside 100 yds from all types of lies. They are pretty forgiving and when I hit them very well, the are awesome. I do have a some issues with the 56 out of the sand, especially if the ball is deep, but other than that, these wedges are very good for me. I am a 15-20 hcp.

The RTX-3 CB can be had new for $70 at several on-line/B&M stores.

Personally will vote pm grind for non GI wedges. You can hit it anywhere on the face really. And it’s cog naturally flights the ball. Unless low height is your issue it helps.

I have been playing CBX wedges for over 12 months and couldn't be happier with them - easy to hit, versatile and forgiving..

Yup, ditto in a nutshell. I don’t care what they look like, or what they are perceived as—they just work. 54* and 58* in my case.

Wedges take practice and touch. Replace time practicing with drivers and nail the short game. (I have 3 kids and 3 jobs). Nailing your short game is more rewarding than 350 yd tee shots.

OP talking about 50 yards and in, so don't think (just being honest) a club is going to make that much difference. The term wedges, as in plural, makes me think, get one 58 or 60 that you like how it looks and feels - likely some type of blade - then just play it and you'll learn to use it well. If talking full swing from 50 yards where forgiveness might make a statistical difference, looking at a 64* ? I think maybe a sweet feeling forged blade might help you concentrate better, kind of like a new putter.

Expectations of a good wedge game, implies intrinsic feel or practice.

Even on chip, pitches around the green, 50 yards and in, we do hit off center.
