Blade ho ho ho-ing

So, yet another blade thread, why not? Would love to hear your thoughts on current gen blades, so here’s a bit of background to get this going

I’m a mid-handicapper, around HCP12, but all I’ve played since 2001 were blades. Any cavity backs were short flings lasting no more than a couple of months.

The first set I owned were the Nike Forged Blades, which was a crappy choice for a beginner, but I’d be lying if I said they didn’t look good and forced one to learn to hit the ball properly. Months later, I switched to the Honma LB-280, which were really nice off the face, butI just couldn’t get along with the way they looked.

Then came the Titleist DCIs for a couple of months, before i moved on to KZG Forged Z0 irons. Those were lovely - still have em back in Singapore. Rather large blades compared to the 2 sets of TM MBs that followed (one allegedly belong to a Steve Stricker, bought off WRX that many years back), and a set of RAC blades.

Along the way, I flirted briefly with the Cleveland CG1 (yuck), Cobra Pro MB (not bad, but meh), Titlest 690MB (oddly less harsh than they look), Srixon Pro 100 (FAR less harsh than they look, and far more forgiving too!), then settled on Miura MB-5003s for several years before putting them away due to my mind and body getting fatigued from overplaying.

Fast forward to 2017 where I started again, and the 5003s weren’t being kind to me after sitting in a corner of the room for a good 5 years. Fiancée suggested I try out “something friendlier”, and I ended up with TM M-CGBs. Long, mostly straight, and pretty forgiving. But after getting my swing back a couple of months later, I found myself hankering for blades again, and pulled the trigger on a set of Miura MC-501s - oddly enough, almost as forgiving as cavity back irons, but with the familiar thin top line and almost non-existent offset of blade/mb irons.

Since I hang around the local shop quite a bit, I’ve had the chance to muck about with more irons, and I’m curious to hear the views of anyone who have tried these:

Callaway Apex MB - tried the raw ones in the shop. Buttery soft, slightly on the heavy side but feeling more solid, and go a bit longer than my MC-501 irons.

TaylorMade P730 - surprisingly nice to hit with. I expected harsh and unpleasant, not a fan of the blingy chrome, but it feels quite a bit lighter than the Callaway and Miura. Decent distance, makes a nice alternative to paying through your nose for the MC501.

Cleveland CG Tour - still a yuck in my book after all these years. Still feels like the CG1 I used to have - harsh feeling heads which appear to be more compact than the Callaway MB and 501s. They look close in size to the Miura Tournament blades but slightly larger than the Baby blades.

I’m curious to hear some views, and what else is out there. I hear the Srixon Z965 irons are nice too, but I’ve yet to try them

You need to go to Singapore and get those ZOs. They are a great set of irons. I had a set and back when I had those I did not know as much about shaft tuning as I do now and sold them. Even if you have to tweak and reshaft them it will be well worth it. Personally I have not hit none of the newer stuff. The newest things I own are a set of MP-68s and a set of Callaway 2013 X forged. Right now I am experimenting with a set of first production KZG Forged CBs with graphite shafts. They are also Zero offset like the blades. Do not know if anyone told you or not but all the older KZGs are Kyoei forged.

Tried most of the current offerings but have been put off by a lot of them as they are getting a bit on the large size.

Favourite offerings are the Callaway, Titleist and Cobra blades.

Still rocking my FG59’s and Baby Blades though.

I’m looking forward to 2019 and seeing the new Wilson Staff and Srixon blades.

Know what's really trippy? Those ZOs were launched in 2001/2002, and remains one of the softest playing irons I've ever used. I have them shafted with TT's TX90 shafts (remember those?). Now that you mention it, I have a set of MP32s sitting somewhere as well, though they probably need new grips. Chunky metal, but sooooo soft. I put them up against the MP68 and I preferred the 32s....

I did hear that they were Kyoei forged, and back then, they were cheap for such fine forgings. Now that you mention it, I might just bring them here, and sit them in some Coke for a day or two and get them nice and raw....

EDIT: apparently Coke doesn't do diddly on chrome. Guess I'll have to rust it out the olf fashioned way - more time on the course!

How are the FG59s? A friend of mine got them before he left Dubai, and I recall lusting after those irons for a while. eBay prices look reasonable too!

I will 100% agree with you on the softness of the 32s versus the 68s--- I played a set of 33s until I wore them slap out and they were definitely softer feeling than the 68s. But the 68s are not bad sticks either. Yep the old TX-90s yeah I remember those things I think I still have a set of those pulls somewhere in the recesses of the shop. From what you stated you already have 2 good sets sitting around that IMHO are as good if not better than anything today unless of course you go the Miura or other JDM routes.

Not really helpful but I thought I'd chime in and tell you guys I have a brand new in the box set of FG59's (anniversary edition)in my collection.

A waste not to play them perhaps but I did buy them for a collector set. Not wanting to sell either but to let you know there are still sets around.

When I get a hankering to play a Wilson blade I always pull out my FG 51's. Just a great model IMO.

I've tried many players cavity back irons trying to get the bag set. Through this process I also hit 965's with TI s400 shafts. I found them to be extremely forgiving (in comparison), excellent turf interaction, great length and consistent distance with ease of workability. A blade can't get much better, not to mention perfect looks.

Thumbs up on FG59's but of new stuff, the irons that float my boat are these:

onoff-labospec-mb-247d-iron-main-img.jpg

One Off limited series LaboSpec MB-247D, real expensive but clubs feature soft carbon forging and spin welded hosels made in Himeji Japan. Gorgeous.

Interesting and very nice. So obviously spin welded hosels are not a Miura patent?

Mizuno MP18 is a masterpiece. Feels amazing, sits beautifully and is actually playable to a lot of golfers. Try the Srixons as well. They feel as good as Mizuno.

+1

Picked up Apex CF16’s because of a fitting, but I practice only with blades. I have flirted with picking up a set of MP18’s, because I hit them more consistently than my CF16’s and even fairly close in terms of distance surprisingly (basically once club of difference). If they weren’t so beautiful I would just buy a set but my wife would notice a set of clubs that gorgeous.

I have to recommend the srixon 9 series. I was playing Bridgestone j15 mb's last year. I loved them, so puuurty. But as a 4.6 they were kinda intimidating, especially in the 4,5,6.

I went back to my j40 dpc and was more comfortable, but just missed looking at blades.

Got a set of 545s and a set of 945s. The 545s went a little too far for my liking though one of my few rounds with then was a career low 9...

The thing I love about the 945 is the blade length is much longer than a standard blade. It wasn't really any shorter than the 545. So for a blade they are very confidence inspiring.

I still have my set of original Nike forged blades that I don’t intend to get rid of. Played them up until a couple years ago when I got Titleist 716 MBs. My most recent purchase is a set of Wilson Staff FG-51 Tour Blades (2-P). Overall they’re in good shape, but definitely need to be re-gripped before I swing them. I’ve heard nothing but good things, so I’m excited to see how they hold up almost 30 years after production.

My suspicion is that OneOff contracted the build to Miura. They are in Himenji and as far as I know the only place that does the spin weld. They are only producing 200 sets and the pricing can cover the premium Miura would command.

Just picked up a set of FG-51s 2-P while perusing the vintage club room at the shop I used to work at. Can't wait to see if Wilson Staff releases those prototypes that Woodland is using though. I'll need to get my hands on a set of those.
