Golf New Years Resolution- This time next year this is what I want improved...

What if anything would make a difference in my game? Taking a step back and looking at my game I am asking what in one year would I want different if I could have it.

Well...I would want to score better. I am a 3.6 now and would have to drop 2 points to feel as if it was a good year.

Chipping, putting and better control under pressure. I will work with a pro locally that has shown some great results in my game and many others. He is not just mechanical but emphasizes a lot on the metal side of the game. Pia Nilsson Vision 54 type stuff.

What is a good golf resolution for you all that you would like to see in one year?

I am a 15. I would like to get down to a 10. This is well within my ability, but it requires a level of commitment that I have heretofore been unable to provide. Mostly it means being willing to practice more and in a more pointed manner.

I have been unable to commit to swing/technique changes, mostly because I do not spend enough time implementing them at the range. Then I get out on the course and only half-commit, resulting in garbage that only causes me to second guess the changes. It's a familiar cycle for golfers, I think.

I am also a headcase, but mostly as it relates to the above. Second-guessing plus any small modicum of pressure equals blow-ups on the scorecard.

Anyways, great idea putting pen to paper (or the digital equivalent thereof). Cheers to you all in 2019!!

After shoulder, knee, and hip reconstructions in the last 8 years, my goal is to get my driver swing back up over 100 MPH. Nothing for some of you guys I know, but I'd give about anything to have that distance back in my game.

My resolution is to push myself a bit more. By that, I mean that I want to be able to score under pressure. To feel comfortable in my own skin. I am consistently held back by the limitations I create in my own mind. "You can't hit that draw" "You can't make this putt" "You can't come back from that double"

I want to enter more tournaments and play to the potential that I know I can. Spend less time playing golf swing and learn to play better golf with the swing I have. Hitting a clutch tee shot with a low score, tournament, or match on the line is my goal. Being able to brush it off if i don't is just icing on the cake.

Real interesting topic and I'm curious to see the responses to see if someone sparks a thought in my head.

As for right now, I'm honestly pretty happy with where I'm at. I don't get to the range more than once a week, if that. I'm a regular dude doing the weekend warrior thing. But I've gotten my game to where I'd say is the best it's ever been, and I'm damn satisfied with that.

If I had to pick one thing to improve upon over the next year, I'd want to eliminate blowup holes. I'm generally good for one double-or-more-bogey per round. Obviously, that's not good. I would love to focus on those holes and think about why they happened: were they just bad shots resulting from swing errors, was I distracted by something, tired, etc? If I can figure those out and make my "worst" hole a bogey, I'd be thrilled.

Also, just had a thought writing that...I need to get my fitness where it should be. Start walking a bunch more and eliminate fatigue-related errors.

So my brain tells me I should be worried about short game and putting and getting below X amount of putts per round and blah blah blah. My inner child says hitting my driver 320 would be a much better and gratifying goal.

So with that being said I’ll likely take some lessons this year and get a new set of irons. Probably get a g400max and when that doesn’t get me to 320+ we’ll try out 10 more drivers until I come to terms that my drives aren’t gonna get back to those distances.

One thought for you..

How are you with taking your medicine after a bad shot? That is, can you accept a bogey by playing a perpendicular shot or are you the type to refuse to give up the par and always take the risky "I see a window just over that squirrel nest" hero shot?

Not sure of that applies to your game, it it's a starting point. Maybe you can really focus on where the hole got away from you the next few times out. If it's just a shot OB, was it a poor line you took or was it just a bad swing? If it was consecutive bad shots, was it a mental breakdown after the first one or was it just a couple bad swings? Hopefully you can trace the source of the issue and go from there. Good luck and take care.

Plan A is work on core and flexibility so my back and hamstrings don't tighten up as the round goes on.

Plan B is a major re-arming. 3 wood, 17 hybrid, wedges and putter are safe. Lofted hybrid and irons are in the departure lounge.

Plan C is to sort new waterproofs, shoes etc. Having wide feet means a lot of newer shoes don't fit. May have to travel further afield.

Plan D is to play more courses...clubs staying in boot when travelling for work.

I’m going to play more in 2019. About 4 years ago my decline to just a few rounds per year began with a (very) bad foot, then we had our son and here I am at the end of 2018 and I have played 3 rounds this year. Played maybe 5 or 6 each in 2015 - 2017.

I’m committing to 12 rounds in 2019 plus at least 10 more on a nearby par 3 course.

The simplest answer is to find my long lost short game. The most reliable part of my game for as long as I can remember vanished in the middle of a tournament June 2017. It periodically returns with a LOT of practice (and about 30-60 minutes of warmup before a round) but I’m at a point in life where regular practice isn’t a viable option outside of wearing out my home office carpet. Chip, pitch, bump and run, flop, right lie, rough, or sand...it doesn’t matter any more as my confidence has dropped further than the S&P in 2018.

My commitment to cardio and flexibility in my mid 30’s has improved my ballstriking and distance through the bag (added 15yds to Dr/3w and 10yds on every other club). However, I’m a complete mess on anything less than a full swing (so from 7 inches to 70 yards off the green). Despite less play and practice, I’ve actually knocked my index down to a career low of 5.3 this year as their are enough 14+ GIR rounds to cover up the bad rounds of 5-7 double bogeys/ESC scores.

So option A is find a short game instructor whose teaching style fits how I understand the golf swing as well as hope my therapist has a side hobby of sports psychology.

Option B is buy a set of hickory sticks and switch to right handed golf! I’m ok with the game being the mostly frustrating enjoyable thing I do.

However, when it’s hard to find joy amongst the anxiety and desparation from missing a green, it’s time to go in a different direction.

To end on a positive note...I’ve made a personal goal of playing 10 new courses, playing with 10 new people, organizing a Scotland/Ireland trip for 2020 and knocking off at least 1 course on my way too long bucket list.

What do you do for cardio and stretching? Thanks

For me its consistent sequencing of the swing (something I used to do very well even if my plane or other things were off i could sequence a swing and make it work).....an old injury that's deteriorating my whole lower left side is culprit I believe but I seen dudes with one leg playing scratch so what's my problem......

Round to round tho it's my sequencing of the movements that I've seen really be kinda all over the map....like to get that down better (Again!)

And always short game, my chipping/putting is a joke right now, not playing as much has lil to do with it but.....like to see more rds at or below par!

And PLEASE no more clubs, jeez almighty the ones I have are just fine! LOL.....

I want to learn to enjoy the process without relation to result. I want to hone the mental side of the game while shedding attachment to results. I want to embrace my preshot routine and take better notes of how I played effectively to bring more consistency to my game.

If anything can go right, it might!

I want to stop golfing with my wife and her friends. Sure it doesn’t happen often, but it really should never happen. I need to have more integrity than I did in 2018.

I will be going back to an 8 club bag in 2019. I went through the steps of going back to a full kit in the second half of 2018.

But, i still sit at an 8 HC... i will be more accepting of my game and play within that in 2019.

BUT, i will incorporate a hybrid to the bag this year... no more 1 iron.

It's called growing up. I'm gonna try that too.

My resolution is to make sure that I keep myself fit and healthy. I to realise that I am not a kid anymore and this stupid game doesn't half take it's toll on the body, If I can do that, my other resolutions should become easier.

Hit a few goals this year, hope to keep improving in 2019. Ultimate goal is to get to single digits. I'm a big proponent of setting goals to push yourself but to make sure they are realistic in the time frame you're giving yourself. I need to take 5 strokes off to get to a 9... Shouldn't be too hard as my average putts per round have been 36 this year. Got fit for a new flat stick and have been really thinking about my short game approach.

I know it's not even close to the same, but with easy putt gimmes and (obviously) flat lies on my indoor simulator, I'm able to shoot par easily. Even though it's not particularly impressive or applicable to real golf, it gives me hope that if I can just work on putting and hitting off some less than stellar lies, I can shoot mid to low 80s.
