The Golf Channel finally has it right. Gene Littler and Byron Nelson playing Pine Valley. So nice. They're hitting 3 and 4 irons from 180. They couldn't make it on GolfWRX now.

Expecting a new thread...can a 4 handicap beat Gene Littler.

And Hogan used to hit a 4-iron 155. What;s your point? Most WRXers are full 'o crapp on their yardages anyway.

I sat and watched the Seve/‘Zinger and Lord Byron/Littler match; pure enjoyment. What was particularly interesting about the Nelson/Littler match was the TV production. You could tell some of the closeups, like the ball landing, were added post production. Obviously they didn’t have 20 cameras, drones and the Goodyear blimp out there. Regardless it was sweet watching those guys hit the ball. Cheers.

Love these old ma-no a ma-no golf shows. Seve was not having his best against the Zinger in the 1995 at the Old Course.

240-250 drive was huge in my father's days. They'd pass that with a driving iron these days.

Seve, one of a kind. He would still only be 61. We missed a lot of good golf from Seve, It would have been much fun and enjoyment watching him on the senior tour...

I love watching these matches. Phil vs. Sergio. Palmer vs. Jack. Jack vs. Player, etc.... For me I didn't get to to watch most of these guys in their prime (not saying that these matches were in their prime) but you know what I mean. I wished they did something like this today so that future generations could see players like I am today.

Does anyone know if matches like these are available for download/viewing somewhere? Would be interested in watching more.

Great entertainment and I can't understand why Golf Channel doesn't run them nore frequently. I could watch these, Challenge Golf, Big Three golf and shows like them all day long and not be bored. I'm old enough to remember seeing them on TV as a weekly series. Even though I wasn't playing golf at the time it initiated some interest in the game for me.

Watching SWWG on Christmas and enjoying the heck out of it. I wish they'd play them anytime rather than the terrible golf movie reruns. It brought up the debate in my mind whether the greats of past generations would dominate today's game the way they did in the forties, fifties, and sixties, which I believe some of them would (in particular, Hogan, Snead, Palmer, and Nicklaus among others). I particularly enjoyed the Byron Nelson vs. Gene Littler at Pine Valley episode where they had a cumulative score of close to +10. The course looked amazing, though it still didn't have the kind of teeth it has today. Both players hit several cold, yank-tops during their round which I've always said was more of a regular occurrence in those days. I've seen most of the HoFer's from when I was growing up (Palmer, Nicklaus, and Trevino namely) hit random shots like this on more than one occasion, something you'd never see from any professional golfer today, unless it was from an abysmal lie of some sort. These older episodes really illustrate the evolution of the game in full color. Man, have things changed....

the Hogan vs Snead match at Houston CC is IMO the greatest Shell's match there ever was (and it ain't even close).

if Golf Channel never has the brains to run it.....

edit: this is unfortunately not the entire episode. I do not believe any exists on YouTube.

I bought that on VHS, when that was still a thing. Wonder if I still have a working VCR somewhere?

I love these. Gotta say though, Sarazen’s commentary is cringe worthy at times.

Unfortunately, the Golf Channel only rolls out the good stuff (Shell's WWOG) at Christmas.

Sort of like PBS, rolling out the goodies for the fundraisers, then going back to the SOS.

The use to be on everyday on the golf channel in the early mid 90's!!!! I had them all recorded. The also use to run another one called All-Star golf. I really enjoyed watching all of the shells matches even though ive seen most of them.

Tonight, I was watching an old SWWG of Faldo vs. Norman at St. Andrews with Dave Marr as the host. Marr was so ill that he was barely able to hold the microphone , but he was still working. He passed two months after this episode was taped, so he must have been very sick at the time. I can't blame him for working. In my cancer journey, golf has been an invaluable diversion from the dreaded thoughts that go along with it...it's the only thing I know that can take my mind off of it. I'm happy to see that he was able to work right up to the end. David Marr is still remembered and loved by those that knew him....he was pure class.

I liked the Nelson/Littler match at Pine Valley.

The greens must have been stimping at about 5-6 and the fairways about 1.

I saw Jack + Arnie the day before on PH #2.

I saw both of those and enjoyed the heck out of them, as well. Sure was a different game back then. During the PH2 episode, they showed a quick shot of Kelly Mitchum, who was a hot amateur at the time and is the short game instructor at the resort now. Pine Valley came across as unplayably tough.
