Fitness. My game is fine, but I live where it’s a 100* all summer and I’d enjoy golf a lot more if I lost some weight and worked on my fitness and flexibility. Shouldn’t be getting tired and making mistakes because of it.

Driving, if I can get it consistent (it doesn’t even have to be super long) I will get back to scratch.

my goal is to improve my overall health which in turn should help to increase my consistency. I generally get tired easily and that 100% impacts my scoring as the round progresses. I am a type 2 diabetic and its tough to lose weight and jogging alone with a pretty sensible diet alone isn't doing it. So prior to 2019 starting i have kicked in some resolutions...

#1: to refine my diet to include more meals per day (smaller in size). High protein, moderate carbs and low fat and sugar.

#2: i have joined a kickboxing training facility a month ago. Its more for the aerobic activity as they have a 10 round circuit of 3 min per round of various MMA inspired exercises. I will continue to jog however this will be on days where i don't get to the club or when i have extra time.

#3: Not wait until the snow leaves in April to swing a club, i will stay active.

This should help with my goal for 2019 to improve my game by improving my overall health.

Would like to increase my swing speed back up to where I was three years ago.

Maybe then I can loft the ball higher than 15 feet with my 3 wood on the fairway.

The simplest answer is to find my long lost short game. The most reliable part of my game for as long as I can remember vanished in the middle of a tournament June 2017. It periodically returns with a LOT of practice (and about 30-60 minutes of warmup before a round) but I’m at a point in life where regular practice isn’t a viable option outside of wearing out my home office carpet. Chip, pitch, bump and run, flop, right lie, rough, or sand...it doesn’t matter any more as my confidence has dropped further than the S&P in 2018.

My commitment to cardio and flexibility in my mid 30’s has improved my ballstriking and distance through the bag (added 15yds to Dr/3w and 10yds on every other club). However, I’m a complete mess on anything less than a full swing (so from 7 inches to 70 yards off the green). Despite less play and practice, I’ve actually knocked my index down to a career low of 5.3 this year as their are enough 14+ GIR rounds to cover up the bad rounds of 5-7 double bogeys/ESC scores.

So option A is find a short game instructor whose teaching style fits how I understand the golf swing as well as hope my therapist has a side hobby of sports psychology.

Option B is buy a set of hickory sticks and switch to right handed golf! I’m ok with the game being the mostly frustrating enjoyable thing I do.

However, when it’s hard to find joy amongst the anxiety and desparation from missing a green, it’s time to go in a different direction.

To end on a positive note...I’ve made a personal goal of playing 10 new courses, playing with 10 new people, organizing a Scotland/Ireland trip for 2020 and knocking off at least 1 course on my way too long bucket list.

What do you do for cardio and stretching? Thanks

play tennis, rowing, stationary bikes and elyptical machines, as well as use the hell out of a rocking stretch chair at my club’s gym. It’s only taken 35 years, but I can finally touch my toes (something I could never do even while playing tennis through college).

goal is sub 6 handicap (current is 12.1)

Increase my GIR (current is ~54%) and FIR (current is ~37%)

Focus on

---increasing FIR (goal is 50%+)...Driver is the only club that is killing me off the tee, it's not bad, just not as accurate as I want it to be..

---lowering putting avg. (bounces around 35-36)

---reducing proximity to hole on approach

What if anything would make a difference in my game? Taking a step back and looking at my game I am asking what in one year would I want different if I could have it.

Well...I would want to score better. I am a 3.6 now and would have to drop 2 points to feel as if it was a good year.

Chipping, putting and better control under pressure. I will work with a pro locally that has shown some great results in my game and many others. He is not just mechanical but emphasizes a lot on the metal side of the game. Pia Nilsson Vision 54 type stuff.

What is a good golf resolution for you all that you would like to see in one year?

Great topic. Spent the last few years at a 9. I just play when I can, zero practice time. With baby number two on the way, I’m not joining the local course for 2019.

I think I’ll be able to go and get some serious practice in each week though. I hit exactly zero buckets in 2018 but perhaps I can hone my putting, chipping, and get rid of this hook I’ve developed over the last two years.

So I guess mine is to get out and practice, even if I don’t play more than 1 or 2 rounds for the year.

Ya know, this topic made me think. I'm not sure I'm feeling as driven to be a better golfer as I used to be. I'm an 8 handicap now. A few years ago I worked my tail off, and I got down to a 6 for a brief time. But I remember how much work it was, and I also remember feeling a lot more irritable when I didn't perform well on the course. All that effort, and the best I could muster was a couple points lower in handicap?

I'm just not sure I want to go back to that. I want to play good, but not if it comes at the cost of enjoyment. I kinda like where I'm at now. My resolution is to keep enjoying myself. If I get better, great. If not, that's fine too.

How's that for being non-committal?

The most inconsistent aspect of my game is consistency from hole to hole and even shot to shot. My practice time is very limited now and I took the plunge a few months ago on the SL irons and saw some immediate improvement by having fewer "swings." Hopefully that will continue into 2019 and get a little more consistency inside each round.

I’m currently a 12 handicap and would like to get down to an 8. To get to an 8 I need to improve off the tee and hitting greens. Fairways hit aren’t that important as being just in the first cut is fine too, but hitting more greens is the big thing that will help me lower my cap. I only hit 26% GIR this year. If I can get that up to 35-40% I’d be happy. Also taking more time to read my putts instead of looking real quick and slapping it at the hole. One putting is more fun.

Just play more golf and enjoy the experience.. I awoke on Christmas morning at about 3AM feeling strange. Long story short, I wound up in the emergency room and quickly diagnosed with atrial flutter tachycardia. Resting heart rate over 200bpm. No history, and at 66 I've been fortunate to be very healthy. It took six hours to get my rythym back and normal heart rate, two days in the hospital and no explanation for what caused the episode. It is my wake up call to get out and enjoy life and start marking off those courses on the bucket list. My wife did confirm that if I die there will be no money going in the box with me. I hope all had a Merry Christmas and wish you a Happy and healthy New Year.

Lose a few pounds, do more golf related exercises, walk instead of ride from time to time, hit more range balls, continue with short game practice, get back to single digit handicap. Stop buying new clubs and get used to my set-up.
