jll62's WITB - SIM season

Recommended Posts

Nice additions to the bag! A little surprised to see you back with a Scotty but 2 years is a long time with a putter! I could really see you with a Hi Toe for sure. Where should we get warm so we could hit the M3/M4. Hurry up Spring!

Thanks, Ed! I hit the ball really well last season, but I had a poor putting year for my standards: -1.7 SGP. Not good. I felt I needed to get the stroke back to the way it was before when I had a little more tournament success and played in a couple of USGA events. So, back to the Button Back for now. Maybe it will be replaced buy a Black Copper Juno when those are released.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to trying the M4 Tour. I skipped over the M2 Tour primarily because I had the 2016 M2 deep face T3, but I'd like to give a 15 deg three wood another shot. The T3 was a little too one dimensional. It was fantastic off the tee, but I struggled with it at times off turf.

Think they'll notice? :rtfm: Maybe I should put a TaylorMade head cover on it!

I struck it really well for the most part last season and putting let me down. -1.7 SGP last season, so I need to shake it up in 2018 and I plan to do that by going away from high MOI putters and get back to what I used to do back when I rolled it crazy good. I do like the way Pure Roll grooves get the ball into forward roll a little earlier than non-grooved putters, so I wouldn't rule out seeing a Black Copper Soto with the flow neck in the bag at some point.

What’s the profile of that thing?

Advertised as a mid-launch, low spin shaft. I've seen some posts by TollBros here that this shaft has a lot of similarities to the Tensei Orange V2 that a bunch of folks seemed to go crazy over.

First post updated with new pics of the bag as it sits right now. A lot is the same as before, but the astute eye will notice some changes as we kick off 2018. This is the bag I played in my US Open Local qualifier and will be the bag I use as qualifiers for my state golf association events ramp up in the next few weeks.

  • Back to the V-Steel
  • New shafts in the 4 and 5 irons
  • New wedges
  • New(?) putter
  • New ball

Just scanned this thread and very happy to read, "Back to the V-Steel" 2 posts up.

I had six 3-woods in the bag for a practice round on Monday ahead of US Open Local qualifying. I just keep coming back to the V-Steel eventually. I thought I had replaced it for good last year, but I guess not.

I have thought your bag was exceptionally well thought out. I think it’ll be fun for you to take a look at some new irons in the new year. Can’t wait to see and read about your testing and what you end up with. One thing I know that probably won’t change, is that Putter! Do you think you’ll change golf balls? I know being totally dialed in is important to you. Pure Distance isn’t the main goal. What would it take for you to switch golf balls?

Thanks, Ed. I'm a club ho at heart, but this is the most stable my bag has been for a while. That said, 2019 has the potential to provide some big overhauls. Here's my wishlist:

Driver

I'm extremely happy with the GP-6s shaft after trying a number of other options. I've always been an S/X tweener and this falls perfectly in line, so I don't anticipate a shaft change. For the club head, I played the 2017 M2 all season with great success, but I really like the M3 in the couple rounds I've used it this fall. So, M3 is definitely in the bag to start 2019, but I'll test the M2 and M3 against whatever new drivers TaylorMade releases in 2019.

3-wood

I finally found an M3 T3 late in the year and will be putting that through its paces, but the 3-wood spot is always open for me.

Irons

This was my 4th season with RSi TP, but just the second with the MOI matched C-Taper build. I tested different shafts this year (Modus 120 and DGX100) and also spent some time testing out various combos of P730, P750, and P770, but nothing could knock my gamers out of the bag. They're the best irons I've ever played. On paper, the P760 looks like the perfect iron for me because I already play a bit of a combo set and have been trending that direction. It will take something special to knock the RSi TP out of the bag, but I have high hopes for the P760.

Wedges

Wedges get replaced every year, so something new will be in the bag. I love my current MG Raw 52, but TaylorMade is sold out of them. I've looked at the expanded Hi-Toe line already and find the shape of the 52 appealing, so that will almost certainly end up in the bag. The lob wedge is up in the air at the moment. I'm a fan of the Hi-Toe, but not sold on the ATV grind (which is why I have a custom grind on mine). I'll be giving the 4-way camber sole a shot and may end up customizing the grind to bring the leading edge closer to the turf. More to come here.

Putter

As you noted, it's highly unlikely I'll change models. That said, I did switch from my JDay Itsy Bitsy proto to a DJ Itsy Bitsy proto this season because the DJ proto sat slightly different. One thing I've noticed is that I don't putt as well on slower greens with these putters, so I'm considering setting one of them up with a little more loft for use on slower, shaggy greens. That's likely the only change, however.

Ball

I love the TP5x, but I'll almost certainly switch to something new in 2019 because I don't like to be tied to old versions of a ball. Even if you stock up, you eventually run out and have to switch. I prefer to make the switch on my own terms. My ideal ball would be something with the same performance characteristics of the TP5x, but with a little better feel around the greens. Let's see what's released in 2019.

I have high hopes for 2019 ball releases. I think you would really like the 4 way grind.

I played the TP5 in 2017, but switched to the TP5x this year because I liked the performance better off the mid and long irons. The TP5x was better in the wind for me than the Z Star XV, which had previously been the best wind ball I'd played. I've managed to live with the slightly firmer feel and less spin around the greens of the TP5x compared to the TP5, but really hope they soften up the cover just a tad in 2019. I'm not looking for more distance out of the golf ball, but if they can increase ball speed marginally while still keeping overall performance, that would be just fine.

I have thought your bag was exceptionally well thought out. I think it'll be fun for you to take a look at some new irons in the new year. Can't wait to see and read about your testing and what you end up with. One thing I know that probably won't change, is that Putter! Do you think you'll change golf balls? I know being totally dialed in is important to you. Pure Distance isn't the main goal.

I have actually added a bit of spin with my new wedges/irons. But a bit more ball speed off the driver would be good.
