We was comin' back from a golf junket in Hilton Head, just delivered the some bad news to foursome on their home course. Got to Sea Pines early - eleven hundred men went out to play that day. Many had scarfed down their free box lunch and were gone in less than nine holes. Couldn’t handle the pressure. Didn't see the first sandbagger for about a half an hour. White Belt. 6-footer. You know how you know that when you're in the fairway, Chief? You tell by lookin' from the white belt to the heel. What we didn't know... was our side trip to Sea Pines after the junket had been so secret, no phone calls to the wives been made,

Heh.

[Ferg pauses and takes a drink]

They didn't even list us overdue for an hour. Very first hole, Chief, sandbaggers come cruisin'. So we formed ourselves into tight groups. Y'know, it's... kinda like pork hocks in a jar, and the idea was, sandbagger comes to the nearest man and that man, he'd start poundin' and hollerin' and screamin', and sometimes the sandbagger go away... sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that sandbagger, he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. Y'know the thing about a sandbagger, he's got... bloodshot eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'... until he beats ya. And those black eyes roll over bloodshot, and then... oh, then you hear that terrible high-pitch screamin', and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin', they all come in and they... rip your wallet to pieces.

[Ferg pauses]

Y'know, by the end of the first two holes... lost a hundred men. I dunno how many sandbaggers. Maybe a thousand. They averaged six a minute. On hole # 3, Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Fritz Roberts from Cleveland- baseball player and former semipro coxswain. I thought he was asleep, reached over to wake him up... he fell out of the cart. Upended. Well... he'd been taken for his life savings, and they even took his pants below the waist. On the fifth hole, Mr. Hooper, a ranger saw us, he came in fast and he saw us. Young guy, a lot younger than Mr. Hooper. Anyway, he saw us and come in fast and three hours later, a big fat multi-passenger golf cart comes down the fairway and starts to pick us up. Y'know, that was the time I was most frightened, waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a golf glove again. So, eleven hundred men went into Sea Pines, four men come out, and the sandbaggers took the rest, June the 29th, 1999.

In friendly matches where a bunch of guys toss in $60 .. 20 skins, 20 stableford, 20 blind 2 man draw, approx. $450

In a weekend two day cash scramble, my share of the 4 man team win and a lone skin day 2 was about $2,600 (my 3 partners caps combined for +11)

When the twin and I won our member guest in 2011, between prizes and cash (calcutta and parimutuals) it had to be close to $5 or $6k each. I do hear of some big course here in greater Toronto that see MG calcutta pools over 100 grand

Best haul for me was $780 bucks. This was for a mens tournament that was held in Edgewood Tahoe. Took home first place for the entire tournament $400, took the low net for the 1st day and a Kp which was another 200 bucks and split the blind draw the second day in like 3 place plus another Kp the second day. Felt good that day. Of course I donated some of it back to Harrah"s casino before I left.

I have won scattered $50 gift certificates playing in scrambles.

As far as the local Senior group, I won $29 one day in October. My team had best-ball low net, and I won two skins (individual).

I've won and lost quite a bit of money over the years.

Largest single day win from gambling was just over $3,000 one day at Lakeside Golf Club in Burbank.

Largest single day loss, probably $1300ish.

Largest skin was $2,100 this last November at Sandpiper.

And by the way, Ferguson, that was fantastic. Is that connected to an actual golf trip?

Want to say around $100. Usually play $10 skins no carryover, snake (last 3 putt $10 per), greenies on par 3's ($5 per, must par or better), 6 hole matches with rotating partners every 6 holes ($20 per, auto press when down 2). Maybe one or two individual matches 9/9/18 at $20 per or $50 if no other games going on. Most of it actually works out to cancel out assuming no one shoots a 76 or something. I'm a 10-12 with the rest of the group wither 2-5 or maybe another 10-14 guy.

I know it is not the question but I witnessed $8700 on 18 holes one day. It was in our game but you did not have to lose more than $50 bucks unless you kept pushing things. About 4 of the guys had so many double downs, side bets, and whatever going on that I really didn't even understand all the terminology LOL, but I saw the money change hands. To me that kind of money is an opportunity to lose friends and get kicked out of the house(on the same day), but always relative and these guys had it to play with.

Me personally, won $185 on a different day playing 2 man best ball team. I was playing to a 3 those days as was my neighbor. The guy was a jerk in most ways but he knew how to bet. He was one of those who seemed to always win money regardless of how he played. We were a decent team in that my HC came from a lot of pars and his rounds were more of the bogey followed by birdie thing most days. I kept us in a lot of holes on tough courses and he would grab enough win holes to carry the money.
