The feeling of Miura

Recommended Posts

Am I the only person that doesn't get it?

I have purchased 2 sets of this company's clubs because so many people on these boards say they feel solid "like butter", but I just find the feel to be very heavy with a dense almost thudish feel that lacks the "thwack" of a solid strike. I have sold both sets inside of 2 weeks of spending a grand a set, each time feeling like I got "P.T Barnumed" again. (founder of Ringling brothers circus, qouted as saying "a sucker is born every minute")

I much prefer the feeling of Mizuno forged clubs and have gone right back to the MP-32's which I think feel much more solid and balanced.

I also wonder how many bloggers who rave about Miura's actually have them?

any feedback as to why I may just not be getting "it" would be appreciated.

No, you are not the only one!

I do feel the same thing also on the NEWER line. Most likely are because of the grade of metal they've used and type of finish.

A lot of talk also about welded neck is one of the factor's.

I'm not sure either if this problem are the same w/ the japanese edition one.

Awesome looking iron though!

Just my 2 cents!

Many people don't like the feeling that a welded hosel produces. Some think it kills the forged feel and produces an undesireable sound. Others think those characteristics define a premium forged club. I personally have never been a big Miura fan. The first time I noticed a club that was purchased from them was the old MacGregor PCB Tours. Had a very dull feeling compared to what I was used to with MacGregor. Some time later I experienced the same feeling when I was given a set of Miuras to play.

I am glad others have reached the same conclusions. I thought I was some kind of mutant!

I have been playing golf at a single digit handicap for 30+ years and was thinking that I may not acctually know what "solid" really means.

I was trying so hard to get what I thought was "solid" that I screwed up my swing and had to go back to my old clubs and practice for a week to get my swing feeling back.

I now think that if you try a club and you don't love it in 3 swings it isn't for you!

Having owned both CB-201s and now, the CB-301s, you and the others must have "hands of stone."

OK, lol. :)

Seriously, the 201s/Nippon 1050 were dense and solid, I wouldn't call them buttah' - but they had a unique precise feel. Maybe you shouldn't have sold them so quickly, it took me about a month to grow accustomed to the feel.

If you don't own them for a while, with apologies to the others on the board who did not appreciate the feel, I don't think you can enjoy the unique feel of the 201.

I disagree completely with Joe K if he is talking about the CB-301 - that iron in Nippon 1150 is buttah'. It has a lighter, sweeter feel than the 201s - slightly different, in a good way, for most of you who want an iron to feel like buttah'. It is more Mizuno-like in feel - lighter and sweeter.

They are two different irons with a different feel (201 v. 301) - the 201 feels like a precise, solid surgical instrument while the 301 is a lighter, precise, sweeter feeling club.

But everyone has a different opinion on feel. Each of us have our own holy grail. That's just the facts, Jack. That's golf clubs. :ok:

Feel is a subjetive thing, so i'll let the majority speaks.

For me, the only newer version that feel soft enough like Mizuno is the MB5002 w/ brush satin nickle finish.

Of course we can't compare feel between muscle back and cavity back, we can't even compare deep cavity and shallow cavity...IMO it's just no way no matter what material they've use, plus we have to be a great striker to be able to tell all this stuff.

Hi Joe -- as you said, feel is a subjective thing.

So you can't really let the majority speak.

Feel is an individual thing. Each of us have our own holy grail when it comes to feel.

And each of us knows what feels good to us and what doesn't feel so good.

But one can make generalizations - which is what we're doing here. I've owned both of the above sets - the 201s for more than a year, and now the 301s, for a month. I've also owned MP-33s for a year. And the above are my observations of the differences and similarities between the sets in terms of feel.

I'm talking about all the posters here have their right of opinions. We have to remember, we are not the only one posting, right?

At the end we can see the majority opinions, As of how people digest it is not our control. That is what I meant majority will speaks.

Beauty is to the eyes of the beholder !

I respect completely on your opinions, but i do respect others too.

I personally like the look of the 201 and I personally can live and play w/ 735CM SS w/ no problem in feel, eventhough i know it's harsher feel.

Cheers!

Joe - I think you misunderstood me.

In my first post, I made a funny. I am not dismissing others' opinions.

I also voiced my opinion.

I hope others respect it based upon my description and ownership of the two Miura irons.

Just because a majority says one iron feels better than the other -- doesn't mean squat to the lone golfer making a decision. As we both agree, feel is subjective - the only judge that matters is the guy holding the golf club in his hands who must make a decision as to whether he likes the club or not.

The group doesn't swing the club. One golfer swings the club. It's his judgment that counts. If 99 guys say a club doesn't feel good but one guy says it feels great, then it's a great feeling club to that sole golfer.

Hope we both agree on that.

You are entitle to have any opinions you have.

I've worked and own pretty much almost everything they have and even visited miura plan in Himechi ( himeji ), In fact I was one of the first who brought Miura name since golfequipments.com & GEA forums 7-8 yrears ago. I was one of the first Miura dealer who launch Ray Floyd's edition which IMO is better material ( softness ) to the one it is now. I've seen how the neck weld together and knows exactly the technique , So I have enough Miura history under my belt and I can hold my own opinions.

And I still respect your opinions no matter what.

OK - I respect yours, too.

But disagreement doesn't mean disrespect.

And I'll respect the opinion of Jim 30+ hc as to what he feels.

The point of this thread is the feel of Miura irons and how some people don't agree that they feel like buttah.' I agreed with the poster but also stated my opinion that the 301s feel sweeter.

One doesn't have to visit the Miura factory, the Titleist factory, the Callaway factory or any other factory to have an opinion about how an irons feels.

My "feeling" now is that my opinion is not worthy because you are an acknowledged expert and I'm only Jimmy 9 'capper who just plays the game.

Hope that's not the case.

I don't have your extensive experience but I do have a badge of honor as a club ho.'

I think the Miura CB-201's are every bit as great feeling as ANY TaylorMade Miura or any other

Tour issue iron I've ever owned or hit..

AMEN...."ball." I too just put a set of 201's into play with Nippon 1150 Tour x's and they have taken the place of my brand new Lehman Box Toes. I never thought it could happen but for now the Lehman's are in the bullpen waiting for the call and the 201's are startin' then game. As good as anything ever hit IMHFO.

I agree that the 201s are great feeling - it's a unique feel - I won't say they're buttah' - they're direct, precise, solid and dense yet soft at the same time.

The 301s are lighter and feel softer.

I really can't tell you which one I prefer most -- I do miss my 201s in certain respects.

They're just different - imho.

I think the Miura's feel fine... but I am a old Mizuno guy at heart... love TN-87s they are the ultimate in my opinion... my irons of the week are MP-4, talk about thin topline, no offset and box-toe.

But there is the problem. Which Taylor Mades were done by Miura and which weren't. Many initial runs were done by Miura but when they couldn't produce the volume companies like Taylor Made wanted the iron was outsourced to other producers. The best example was the X-300 FCI. They started with Miura in Japan and wound up in Mexico for the final run and those weren't huge volume sellers despite their cult like following. The RAC CBs and MBs and combo sets nobody could tell where they were done after the initial run of shiny chrome CBs that said coin forged on the hosel---those were from Miura. The rest is anybodys guess and also the reason Taylor Made stopped putting the stickers on the 5 irons---even they didn't know after a while.
