2019 Equipment Contract Changes

Read all of this thread and yall are cracking me up. Do any of you REALLY buy gear based on a player? I do think the marketing strategies of OEMs is interesting but as a semi older guy, seeing my old heroes do their changes through the years and the players of my age do the same, it proved to me gear sponsorships mean squat other than driving the price of cool gear up to pay endorsements which I don't want to contribute to. How many old dudes on your course do the "Ricky" look at 45-60? If so, please please post the pics for my laughter...but they have to have the Puma gear AND the Cobra gear.

The thing I like about WRX is how so many members have strong opinions based on their personal experience with gear and results rendered by usage. Kinda supports my statement above.

Here we go with this again. Marketing and advertising is pointless, got it.

I think what gets missed with these player endorsements is the intent of the manufacturer in today’s environment.

The end goal is obviously to sell more items/widgets. But it’s not a straight line between paying Brooks and driver sales. The real value is the VERY CHEAP cost this model of marketing allows.

Let’s use Justin Rose for example here and make a couple of assumptions for the sake of the point. If Rosey contends 8x this season and a couple of those are majors, how much air time on all of the different platforms does the Honma brand and logo appear? Between round the clock coverage on the Golf Channel and ESPN and other media outlets, that logo and the Honma brand will be seen by millions and millions of eye balls.

The real value is that this becomes a very powerful marketing tool bc as consumers (even if we WRX’ers know better) we tend to marry the success of Rose with the tools he uses. If you look at a golf tournament has a potential 3 hour infomercial and the Golf Channel/ ESPN highlights as additional hits, how much would it cost to run advertisements to the EXACT demographic you’re targeting, that many times over as many years of the contract? Essentially, (in this example) if Rose has any level of success, they’ve got a real good bargain.

As a final thought, think of how many times they have and will continue to show Louie’s double eagle in the ‘12 Masters. Every time they do, front and center is the UPS logo. I don’t kbow the specifics of that deal, but I would imagine you couldn’t put a price on that kind of continued and drip marketing to a specific target market.

Going by his Twitter it is certain that Justin Thomas is not changing things up any time soon.

Quote “Any rumor of me ever changing can be squashed. I always will use what I think can produce my golf. And for me, that’s Titleist”

Well he is wearing RLX instead of Polo Golf :)

Hey all: Stick with me here but I look at tour pro equipment contracts like political advertising. When it comes to politics how many people that go vote in November don’t really know all the candidates platforms but rather just know the name(s) they see on tv billboards and or signs in peoples yards so that’s who they vote for. Same goes for golf equipment sponsorship in that companies just want to get there name out there so when we go to a golf shop we can say I’ll try this or that brand because they’ve heard of them. PS take Tiger Woods for example when he was with Nike and dominated the tour why would they need to have any other pro on staff. It’s because of name recognition. The more people see a golf companies name in this case the more likely they are to try and possible buy at a golf shop. Just my $0.05 worth. Thanks and happy new year to all...️‍♂️

Thanks for clearing all of this up. I've been waiting for a new member to come in and "enlighten" all of us around here.

Wow, thx. I'm humbled I enlightened an advanced member with 2k posts' mind......I'll make sure to share more opinions and maybe contribute more, thanks for the encouragement.

How many of you that say amateurs don't buy based on what pros play bought a $300+ Scotty Cameron putter because Tiger made everything under the sun that he needed to? But never picked up a Tour Edge or the new Ben Hogan line because nobody on tour plays them?

Tour use is validation of the 'quality' of manufacture, whether subliminal or pure endorsement.

How to play golf.
Hit the ball.
Find the ball
Repeat until the ball is in the hole.
Have fun.

Own 1 Scotty, a Circa 62 that I bought used because I had it confused with a Circle T.

Currently own a Tour Edge driver and 3 wood.

First hybrid I ever bought was a Hogan.

Exactly! If a company doesn’t have Tour validation...people won’t buy it. Of course there are outliers, but they’re few and far between.

Wait a minute. Just hold it. DOZENS of people have bought Hogan irons with their new direct to consumer model.

If Gary W plays the Cortex, that would be kinda cool.

What would truly be cool is if he stopped playing that chop cut off the tee and showed us what kind of speed he can really generate with the driver.

If I am not mistaken J J Henry plays the new Hogan equipment on tour---- But I buy clubs based on what I like > Personally I could care less what Joe Pro plays on tour. It does not influence me one iota

It’s not necessarily that bc Tour Pro Steve plays a brand you will buy it. The player endorsement’s true value is the constant marketing of that brand on Saturday and Sundays from 2-6p and the highlight shows all week after.

It’s rarely a straight line; more of a constant drip to at least get you to “think” of their brand when it comes time to make a purchasing decision.

From the pics posted on the Rose/Honma thread, it looks like Rose has also moved to Bonobos for apparel.

Wonder what that'll mean for the future of the AdiPure line.

The Bonobos piece is interesting. They make solid golf clothes - especially pants being their bread and butter. Their shirts that I have tried have been hit or miss. I wonder if this means an expansion to their golf line.

It did seem like adiPure was created specifically for Rose - so I wouldn't be surprised to see it go away or be drastically reduced.
