Rory McIlroy says the European Tour is a stepping stone to playing on the PGA Tour

Another twist in the story. He's not wrong but a lot of people will take the hump hearing this said out loud.

Well he's probably not wrong for the top 25 players in the world, for the rest its not just a stepping stone.

I used to be such a big Rory fan, but some of the garbage that comes out of his mouth is starting to irritate me, he can do whatever he wants in his career, he has earned that right, but don't be bad mouthing something that has helped him throughout his career up to now, there is just no real need

All he needed to say was "im spending a year mainly focused on the PGA tour, so i can concentrate on the majors etc etc blah blah"

Agreed. I like him more after each interview TBH. It's no different than a footballer moving from a bottom half club to one in the top 6.

He's simply talking off the cuff and not worrying about his "team/sponsors" like corporate Jordan or distracted by the hum of an AC unit like DJ.

You have to be pretty precious about the Euro Tour to take any offense.

Disagree. If you're, say, #26 through #100 on the Euro tour you're trying to move up into the top 25 so you get more invites to WGC and US PGA tour stuff. Same as the Web.com tour in the US. I doubt that many pros below #25 on the Euro tour are content with where they are and not trying to move up. Or look at US pros who go and play the Euro tour full time. They are absolutely using it as a stepping stone--Koepka and Uihlein come to mind.

I think people have developed an allergy to hearing the truth.

Every tour IS a stepping stone to the PGA as the PGA is the top level in mens golf. It's just that simple folks. Now if you get all excited because Rory was the one to say it, oh well, that's on you. It would be no less the truth coming from Tiger, Jack, or Molinari.

Point is you biting your tongue in your office is not applicable to what Rory says to the press. There is no job for him to get sacked from just because he said something you personally find lacking.

"My life's here. I have an American wife. I live in America," said McIlroy.

"Honestly, I enjoy it here more. The way of life is easier. The weather. The convenience," he added.

Lol, how can he play for the Euros in the RC? Isn't it a sham to do that? I think you need to have gained US citizenship before you're 18 to be on the US team. It would be great to change that rule and poach Rory over.

Sounds like you need a new job.

And a pro athlete isn't Joe Bloggs working in an office. It's bad enough when people compare their golf games to tour players, but comparing professions? Not even close.

Rory stepped up to be the host of the Irish Open for a few years, amongst other things he's done to play on the Euro Tour, when it certainly would have been a damn sight easier to just play the PGA tour full time.

There's no disrespect here.

Rory is such a jerk for saying something we all know?

Europe Tour should motivate to fix it, not complain that he said it.

They could easily steal some big names during the fall Australia swing and around the Open Championship. They should angle to make Aus the 5th major and surround the Open with events with more prize money. They could pick another weak spot on the PGA schedule and host a Bermuda event.

Or, be happy being AAA.

I think the idea that SuperBrit was trying to get across is that it's not necessary to step on toes in all cases. If you go out to eat with a group, one of which is the guy that helped you along in your golf career, and his wife is there and looking frumpy, do you mention it? Probably not. If so, I'd love to be there to watch the fallout.

Perhaps this is an opportunity for the ET to speak up and set the record straight from their point of view.

Can't believe all the fuss about McIlroy. This is the guy the PGA Tour should be encouraging to join.

European Tour can't fix it because Fed Ex is putting $15m into their cup and no sponsor in the world exists that will put more money into another golf Tour.

Rory doesn't even have to play in any continent but Europe. If he wants to skip Dubai fine but surely he can play in Ireland, Scotland and England at least in front of his own fans. Can't complain when he hears USA when he's in the final round if he wants to only play in America.

Rory doesn't really seem to have loyalty to anything except the dollar. The "I've done my time" bit is irritating, like he was doing the European Tour a favour by playing. He only played 4 tournaments a year anyway, he makes it sound like he was travelling from Kenya to India week to week.

He's come out and said it now so good luck to him. He's limited his chances of winning regularly and as others have said he's only interested in two things: 1) Himself 2) Money

What he said about the ET is disrespectful to the Tour and those grinding on it week in week out. Good thing is we won't have to listen to the Sky commentary team bigging him up every other week.

Hope it works out for him.

I don't think anything that Rory said was wrong but that he said it was.

Honestly, there was absolutely no need for someone in his position to say that kind of thing.

The "I've done my time" bit is irritating, like he was doing the European Tour a favour by playing.

Dave, the problem is that he HAS been doing the European Tour a big favor for close to a decade now. Some of the Irish sports press have characterized his efforts with the Irish Open as saving it from going under, and, despite the ET's best efforts, some tournaments are finding it harder than ever to find sponsorships. The Tour needs all the help it can get.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/golf/45867596

Also, I enjoy having mild golf controversies to talk about. So many people complain about robotic personalities on Tour, and Rory certainly isn't that. It's refreshing to have a straw to stir golf's drink (to steal phrase from Reggie Jackson).

Rors in another “tells it how it is” shocker.

It’s refreshing to hear someone who is always honest, and is prepared to give his opinions. No doubt the likes of McGinley & Mrs Doubtfire will be outraged, but he’s not wrong in anything he said.

He's right. He's tried to combine both Tours and it's worked against him. He came out and said he was going to concentrate on the PGA Tour through August and then see how to work in some Euro events. Caught some flak for it. Now he's just putting it out there that he doesn't care what others think. He wants to win Majors and he wants to make his mark on his career. He's come to the conclusion that he can best accomplish his goals by concentrating on one Tour. He's doing it for himself because nothing he's done for others seems to carry any weight going forward. I like his honesty. I like his chances. Instead of being wishy washy, it looks to me like he's getting himself together for a run of serious golf where he finally puts everything he has into it. Tiger always did Tiger. Didn't care what others were doing. Played the schedule that got him ready for the Majors. Rory needs to do Rory.
