He doesn't want to tell the world as it's early days but he knows for the next 8 months he wants to stay near home...as a relatively newly wed couple this would make sense, well as much as all the other theories anyway!

European Tour can't fix it because Fed Ex is putting $15m into their cup and no sponsor in the world exists that will put more money into another golf Tour.

Actually Fed Ex is doubling the FEC prize pool to $70 million dollars next year. $15 million to the winner.

Of course, with the way the PGA Tour and European Tour have set their schedules it should be easier for players to play in the US January-June plus the playoffs in August and get their minimum tournaments to play in Europe.

 

 

I think the real issue is that Rory saw what the Saudis were willing to pay Tiger to show up for their event (roughly the same amount as the entire purse of the British Masters) and he wants that rate.

When McIlroy skipped the Players, he won a major, in fact he's won more majors with more of a European focus than he has in recent years with more of a PGA focus. It's money speaking rather than what is 'good for his game'.

 

Just feel like as soon as Rory's put in a corner, he kind of lashes out and says something rashly. Was the same with the Olympics, Ryder Cup and now the European Tour. Six months later he'll say 'oh I regret that'...then he does it again.

 

I mean if it comes to September and he's feeling fresh and decides to play on the European Tour, he'll look silly for bringing all this doubt on himself. This is the year where The Open is at Royal Portrush as well, I would have thought he would have wanted to keep his home people happy, but obviously not.

 

What Rory could have said:

 

"I've had a great time starting on the European Tour in recent years but I've decided to go down a different path at the start of this one. The way the schedule is set with the PGA in May and 3 majors here, I've decided to focus on the US for the first half of the year, I'm sure you'll understand that's best for my game.

 

After that, I haven't made my schedule yet but I look forward to the Open coming to Northern Ireland greatly and intend to come home for a few weeks to prepare. Once the Fed Ex Cup season is finished I will finalise my schedule for the end of the year."

That's why Poulter beats his chest so much, beats out any new twang which might change his accent.

No. He still needs to play 4 ET events not 2 to keep his ET membership. It's explained in the article linked above and copied below.

I was referring to the two additional events he needs but I didn't quite get that the article assumed that the BMW Wentworth was already part of his plans. So he needs 3 events post-FedEx Cup playoffs basically and they are assuming BMW Wentworth is one. I understand he is playing Omega European Masters immediately after the Tour Championship so he needs to commit to one more event if this is all correct.
