CPO stinks, and I'm not very bright

Recommended Posts

Ordered an RX putter with standard grip in 'like new' condition with 'original matching headcover'. Putter shows up today with a giant SuperStroke 3.0 grip, an Odyssey Works cover that is too big, and enough scratches/dings to not be 'like new' in my book.

I'm not sure if they're to blame, or if it's my fault for being a slow learner as my previous 2 orders were also botched. A couple years ago I ordered a 'like new' Black Series Tour Designs putter that was beat to hell, and then about a year ago I ordered an original White Hot Pro putter but received one of the newer, cheap looking 2.0 versions.

I'm sure they'll make it right, but it will take several weeks and at least one more call to get a truly full refund. Just ranting, and letting others know that CPO is very unreliable.

I've never bought anything from CPO so can't speak from personal experience, but my impression from reading other's experiences here is that they are a consistently good deal. I've seen one or two other complaints here recently though IIRC. Maybe they're slipping a bit? IDK.

When I lived in Austin I used them a lot - especially in the old days when they let you drive over and pick up. Someone decided the riff-raff were a security issue so you had to ship inside the same city. Once I got a right hand shaft in left hand club and they said to ship it back. UPS was literally across the street and I was headed out of town so I drove to UPS center and told them they could save a lot of time by walking the package across the street. They were always good about making sure any issues were fixed.

Unfortunately, this seems like the trend for most all secondhand golf equipment retailers - overselling items, shipping incorrect items, and terribly misrepresenting conditions. Maybe it’s just me, but a few years back it seemed like any time you bought used (clubs, balls) you got better than advertised condition almost as SOP. Are these used equipment companies just not seeing the value of dedicating time and effort (aka money) to maintaining an inventory correctly and providing accurate/ buyer-friendly condition descriptions?

To add to this post’s thoughts... I guess I can excuse some eBay secondhand retailers (not private sellers) for mistakes and oversights occasionally. Honestly, I assume most of them are small time operations working with a small margin to make a buck off of other people’s golf leftovers and junk. But it’s a bad look on Callaway for the secondhand outlet that bears their name to be so inconsistent lately. I guess I just expect a little better from them. Maybe they ARE just a small time operation and I expect too much?

Get connected with a Callaway inside sales rep, I’ve had them personally make sure what I was ordering was in the condition I expected, their customer service is second to none.

I’ve bought several times from CPO. Including in December. Bought a Toulon Atlanta in “like new” condition. When I got it, it was in I would call “good” shape. Had a big ding and some scratches on the top. I emailed them let them know I wasn’t happy. They immediately shipped out a new one, which I got today. Club is in outstanding condition and has a magnetic cover. Shipping back the old putter tomorrow. CPO might be hit or miss, but when they miss they go out of their way to make it right.

I recently ordered a set of CF16 irons and they were in great condition. Processing the trade-in is really slow due to holidays. Overall I’d buy from them again.

I've only ordered recently and the conditions were on point. As for the unreliability I can attest. I had a superstroke putter grip installed on a putter I ordered because it was $10 cheaper than buying one at the store. First time the putter came the grip was not on straight and the putter sat pretty open. Service was great and a new putter was sent out, but this one was not straight as well and made the putter closed. Makes their service technicians look like amateurs.

I have noticed a pronounced change with global/3balls specifically, dating back to beginning 2018 (after last holiday season). All the way up the chain- inaccurate orders, overselling club conditions rather than under, shipping incorrect items, snottier customer service, slower shipping with smart post, and fewer coupon codes. YMMV. I buy more locally now- where I can see the clubs before buying if possible. It's too bad- used to love those guys.

Been using CPO for years, never had a problem they didn't 'make right'.....I'm betting with Holiday staff augmentation, mistakes happen a bit more frequently.

A simple phone call should resolve. I've bought so many like new items that arrive still in plastic I kind of expect it.

I have had good luck with all 3 or 4 of my CPO purchases.

Here's something: I went to Golf Galaxy last night. I bought two Bettinardi putters. When I got home, I realized that the clubs they had given me were, in fact, the same ones that I thought I was purchasing. Pretty impressed with these actual brick & mortar store thingies.

I've never had a problem with CPO. In fact, I just returned an Apex MB A wedge that I'd hit a couple of times on the range and didn't like.

I had purchased it a "average" condition, and you could barely tell it had been hit. They gave a full refund.

Had the same issue with a putter that returned after 2 sessions on the practice green.

They are great. You'll find very few people that have had a poor experience, and if buyers aren't happy with product, they make it right quickly.

My experiences with CPO has been outstanding. Every single item I bought was in better condition than expected. In some cases brand new.

But not to say that they don't screw up now and them. Bring it up to them and hopefully they will make it right for you.

I've always been really pleased with my purchases from CPO - can't speak to 3Balls or Global Golf.

I do tend to order from further down on the condition scale. Seems like most of these complaints come from people purchasing the "Like New" condition.

If you really want "Like New" then you should probably just buy new.

Over the summer I bought a set of Cleveland TA3 form forged from global golf just to use as a traveling set. They said Value condition with club marks and such. No actual pic. But for $35 at the time I said what the hell.

These clubs showed up and are basically brand spanking new. Besides the light patina from probably sitting around. They looked like they had never hit a ball. Even the original grips where perfect Cleveland golf pride. 4173209774d47692e2d9882fcb61aa15.jpg6b2509d2bfd3bc343c9c66e12b336a55.jpg

Huh? If you want new, you buy new. If you want (and buy) "like new" you should receive like new. It's pretty simple really, but CPO has a tough time figuring it out. Regardless, I've learned my lesson (finally) and will not waste my time again dealing with this inept company.

I agree with most of what you said. Like new shouldn't have scratches all over, or a worn grip. If they can't deliver that condition (which they haven't for me in a very long time), then they shouldn't have it listed.

I'm not done with CPO though. I like getting wedges from them when they're on sale. They get beat up eventually anyways, so I don't care if they don't look like new as long as the grooves are in good shape. I also may take a flyer if I find a good deal. But, generally speaking their prices aren't the lowest around and they seem to fluctuate a lot. Almost seems like they go up right before one of their sales. Besides, if I buy from most reputable eBay sellers I'll see pics of the actual club and get a better price.
