New TP5 and TP5X

Looks like the TP5 will be the ball I test against the ‘19 Pro V1. I hope the increase in compression of the new TP5 gives me the ball speed of the old TP5x while retaining most of the old TP5’s short game spin and putting feel.

 

The 2019 TP5 did not change compression. It's still 85 compression, just like the 2017-18 TP5. That said, it does have the firmer HFM layer under the cover to add speed off driver/irons and help optimize spin off wedges, but they changed the core slightly. The net result is a ball that should be a little faster, but it has the same feel.

During our session with Eric Loper, we were told the TP5 compression was staying the same at 85. But yeah, I see things from the last ball, including quotes from Loper, that it was 83. So ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I imagine the change in compression would be near impossible to detect when hitting the balls side-by-side.

The 2019 ball has a much improved paint system. It now moves with the cover at closer to the same rate during impacts, so the paint is less likely to shear off.

 

TaylorMade engineers did most of their testing by firing balls at cart path materials, before building a contraption that could simulate the effect in the same way.

 

I've hit the ball, but haven't had a chance to look into the claims that durability has been increased, so for now I can only go by what I was told.

 

 

I couldn't ever figure out what the fuss was about (durability wise). I not prone to aiming at the cart paths or concrete so I must be in a minority. Improvement is improvement and I hope they didn't change the TP5X too much - feel wise.

 

I also didn't have durability concerns with the TP5 or the TP5x, but clearly it's a sentiment that exists.

This is disappointing, this generation was the X for mere mortals.

I've got a dozen and a half of the current 5X. My current length between rounds stinks. I'll likely miss this release all together. Played 7 rounds in 2018, pitiful.

I'm trying to think of how to describe it. The TP5x didn't feel like a Z Star XV. To me that ball feels hard all the way through, like it has a hard core I can't compress (I know that's not true). The TP5x felt like there was a firmer click at impact than the prior gen ball, but it didn't feel hard. You could still feel that you were compressing the ball with the soft core. Does that make sense?

 

If you were currently playing TP5x, my initial impression was that you'd want to keep playing it and take the positives of the improved performance over any negatives due to a firmer feel. But again, I haven't spent any time with it in the short game, so that could change my opinion.

TM ball lover since BC became AD. (Right now is the only time i haven't been playing a TM ball since they re-entered the market. For reasons - see below)

 

But thought the latest TP5X was a rock from 50 yards and in. No issue with [in fact loved], long game / wind performance.

 

So; i think i'm looking forward to getting the NEW TP5 (Not X) into my hands ASAP !

Certainly one of the Promo vid's i saw for the 2019 balls; were clearly saying 7 yards extra per iron i believe for whoever they were 'interviewing'. Thats half a club or more territory and getting to the stage where you're seriously having to think outside of your normal box ref clubbing. If true.......

You put those designs on the new yellow ball that we haven't seen yet in America (Japan?) and that'll be my ball for life. THat is, of course, pending the durability test that I'm gonna put these things through. Previous gen were...well you know how I feel.
