Vehicle You Learned to Drive In?

ohioglfr

Recommended Posts

Winter boredom has set in, so I thought I'd introduce this topic. Thought it might be interesting to see what type of vehicles we learned to drive in, and secondly, the first vehicle you owned (new or used).

In my case, I learned on my grandfathers International KB stake bed truck. We drove it around on the farm until it was determined I could take it on the road. I was 11 and was hardly tall enough to push the clutch all the way in.

The first car I bought was a '66 VW Bug in 1970. Fun to drive, but the heater and defroster was awful in winter.

Ford Explorer, I think it was a 1995. I would've gotten my license in 1998 around and that was my parents car

I had an 84 or 85 S-10 blazer, black with red interior. I drove a bit with my parents car and truck, but got the blazer soon after 15 so I could practice on the car that would be mine. That thing was sweet, 4 wheel drive and could hold a lot of people. I mounted my mobile phone (that was in a bag) in the center console so I could just pop it open and make a call. Of course I was only supposed to ever call my parents because that's when cell plans included like 20 minutes a month and were pretty much for emergencies only. Lol

'81 Subaru GL Wagon, manual transmission. I still won't drive an automatic to this day, although the mannies are getting harder and harder to find.

1979 Ford Mustang coupe with automatic transmission. My Dad traded that car in in 1982 for a Mercury Capri with a 5.0 liter engine and manual transmission. It took a minute to learn how to drive a car with a clutch but I ended up learning. The Capri was also my first car (buying it from my Dad so he could get his first Toyota pickup truck).

Got my license in '92, Dodge Aries K was my first car. I was a virgin until senior year, I blame the car.

My first car that was my own, was a 1988 LeBaron , it once belonged to Jon Voigt! (hopefully you get that LOL)

That car was not a hit with the ladies

First car I ever drove was a 2000 Porsche 911 with a manual transmission.

Pretty sure my dad thought it would be cool if the first car I ever drove was a 911.

After that it was a 2002 Acura RSX Type S... again with a manual

I learned how to drive in 1968, in my Dad's 1964 Chevrolet Biscayne coupe. Six cylinder, three on the tree stick shift, it was as austere as it came. No whitewalls, no radio, my Mom allowed my Dad no frills.

When I was drafted into the US Army, my Mom was so distraught, she didn't care that my Dad bought a beautiful 1972 Dodge Polara 2 door HT. Dad loved his "luxury" car. He had it until 1987, when it was hit from behind. Dad was taking it to be serviced.

My first car ( in 1973) was a 1965 Ford Galaxie sedan. A real junker, I only owned it two weeks, before someone did me a favor, and totaled it by running into it in front of my parents' house.

Next car, was a 1968 Fury 3 coupe. A real beauty, wish I still had it.

A 10 year old 1963 Plymouth Valiant with three on the tree. The pic below is it, except, lol, ours had faded red paint. Ironically, my dad found a used 1964 Valiant in better shape and got rid of the '63 and so the '64 (with "custom" red body, white top repaint) was my daily driver all through high school. Hey, it was my school's colors and due to it's low value I was able to total it at least twice with fairly insignificant damage, lol. Inline 6, decent mileage and kept outside and started every morning no matter how cold. Once the bottom of the trunk rotted out to the point where we realized I'd probably been poisoning the inside with CO (even in the winter I had the driver's side window open due to my "cool" smoking habit in HS and college), we sold it for salvage.

Enjoy.

Edit, the red '64 on the right is nice - mine was a glossy repainted fire engine red, lol, and didn't look anywhere near as nice as this one.

Leaned on 1977 Honda Civic with a manual transmission. That car had a manual choke lever on the dash as well.

My first car was a 1974 Olds Cutlass Supreme (mom's hand me down). Took a few gals to the Drive In movies around St Louis during the late '70's in that Oldsmobile. It got the job done.

1978 Mercury Comet. Got it from my Dad. Managed to drive it into a tree, and the guy that saw the accident and helped me tow it back to the house knew my Dad, which blew my chances of concocting a suitable lie. My favorite car was a '91 Toyota Supra; first car I ever bought, and I drove it until it gave up the ghost. Man I loved that car.

1960 something Chrysler Imperial....similar to Animal House road trip vehicle. Taught my daughter to drive in a manual Jeep Wrangler. I highly recommend the manual for teenage drivers. They have to use two hands to drive so they can’t text. Keeps them focused. She’s the only one of her friends with hasn’t had even a small accident. Also, she can’t lend her car out because none of her friends can drive a stick

I wanted a Supra so bad. I checked them out at the dealer, but was bummed out that, because I'm so tall, I had to practically put my chin on the steering wheel to look up at the traffic light. One of the great cars of that era.

I think it was a 78 Pontiac Gran LeMans. Nice car to drive actually. My drivers ed class was I think a Chevy Citation.

We also used/abused a Chevy Citation in Driver's Ed. Had class 1st period and our instructor would "make" us drive to Mr. Donut for his morning coffee/donut as our small town had no donut shops. The round trip was about 40 minutes and classes were 50 minutes so we really didn't get that much situational practice and our driver switches had to be smooth and efficient so we wouldn't be late for 2nd!

I had an '88 Supra Turbo with the targa top bought new when I was in law school. Fun car back then, but doesn't hold a candle to the sport coupes today.

I learned to drive a car when I was 14 in 1979. Most of my friends were older and had cars and they taught me to drive - from a '75 Mustang sportback automatic to a '76 Mustang coupe with manual transmission to '76 Celica GTs with manual transmissions (2 friends had these). My parents were not happy. My family also owned (owns) a salvage yard and used car lot and I would drive anything on the lot when my dad was out of the office :)
