The surprising Callaway Fusion driver

Recommended Posts

I currently play a Callaway fusion driver with the stock Recoil 460 shaft in stiff. I've been playing it for 2 years. at the start it worked out great for me. Back then I was swinging a bit slower as I do right now and I got great consistency and decent length out of it. Ever since mid this year I got pretty inconsistent with it and can't stop it to go left, big time sometimes. I swing faster these days as 2 years ago and can't control the head. I'm thinking it has to do with the weight and high torque of the shaft.

About me, 45 years old. Hcp 6. Fitters always say I have a smooth tempo. Swing speed 92-96 mph. My strikes usually are decent.

Rather than spending significant money on a new driver my desire is to find a shaft that better suits me first as I do like the Fusion head (at least in my memory). So I'm looking for a shaft that will better suit this, takes out the left more. I always thought I liked the feel of a lighter shaft (sub 60grams). Recently I hit some mid 60-65 gram shafts and that felt fine for me. I have a tough time with shafts that feel harsh, I like a bit smoother feel.

You guys have any suggestions on a shaft that could bring back consistency (take left out), has lower torque I guess but still feels pretty smooth? Very open to some older types as well such that I can start testing with a couple different shafts without breaking the bank.

Thanks for any help!

Rip alpha 60 red eyes. Plays nice in the fusion. Cheap too.

You don't give your "numbers" so one doesn't know whether you need to kill spin (likely). But fwiw, my SS is similar to yours.

Rather than cut-and-paste and/or repeat myself, there's a link below to my other posts on this thread. Starting with the link there are 2 additional posts on that same page by me that might help.

Additionally, I have hit the Ping G400MAX, both new TS Titleist drivers with various shafts, TM's M4, and Srixon's new one and none of them could beat my Fusion - I suspect, for me, the search is over (but I'll keep trying LOL).

Good luck.

Thanks for your input! @ g-off: which paderson did you get?

On my numbers, launch around 15.5, spin around 2500. Given those nrs I don't really need a whole lot lower launch : spin. Rather less torque or as Stuart G indicated a swing fix:)

Jimi, it was the paderson ts-d1 its a solid mid-high launch for me not real high spinning, I have a fairly level aoa with the driver, to me plays true to flex

Just bought a back up in case something should happen to my driver. I will hit both and see which one is best, but both are identical in set up. I hope it also has the 12 gram weight. I will probably cut it to 45" like my current gamer. The price for these on eBay right now is too good to pass up on, and the shaft is really good.

Got the heavy version last year with the stock recoil 460 shaft in regular flex. At first, I was impressed but after a few rounds started hitting the low pulled shot. Anyhoo, not sure if my swing - fast transition, average joe speed gets along with light shafts. My good drives are approx. 240 and mid flight.

Curious to hear from other fusion owners who have switched out shafts. Mean no offense here, but would rather hear from the average joes here who play either a r or soft stiff flex. What shafts have you gone with?

Average Joe here.

I haven't played the heavy headed version but have used the regular head for some time. I played it with a few different stock length shafts in it like the Speeder 565, Rogue Max, Tensi 60 and they all seem good for me with the best feeling one I would say the Rogue Max.

I play a stiff flex in driver but regular in everything else. This is based on a faster swing and for more control. Sometimes you need a stiff flex to get better control as some swing harder with driver's. Maybe you should try a stiff flex in it and check out results on a launch monitor.

If your CARRY is 240 you're probably not the average joe you think you are. And your ss should be somewhere in the mid to high 90's. i.e. low end of stiff.

And a "fast transition", regardless of average joe ss, would typically indicate a need for either a somewhat heavier or stiffer shaft than normal (for said ss).

My ss is a relatively puny 93 or so and I have little trouble with my Hzrdus Black, 6.0 (stiff) 62 gram shaft.

The heavy version with the regular flex is closer to a senior flex, ya gotta stiffen it up.

What would make it a senior? You basing that on the 12g weight vs 5g weight? 7g doesn’t seem like much difference.

When I played the Fusion I tried the Recoil in R flex (90 mph) and it went left on me.

I put in the HZRDZUS T800 5.5 and it straightened out and gained yardage. It’s 58g I believe.

Is that on a LM ? Or measured distance ON the course ?

Still sounds like about 225 carry and that ain't all that bad. I carry it a smidge further and still use a low-low stiff shaft. You really need to test different shafts if you can.

All a lighter weight shaft will do is allow you to swing it faster. If you can't find the center of the face, that extra couple of mph won't help you as much as finding the center of the face more often.

The difference in ss isn't so much that a 10 or so gram heavier shaft should be disqualified from consideration. Same thing goes for stiffness since one shaft makers stiff is another's regular. Bend profile is another think but we won't bother with that here. If you have the chance you need to test them one against the other. A fitter would be preferable.

A slightly shorter, slightly stiffer (than you think you should hit) shaft can often result in "longer" and more controllable drives along with better consistency. :ok:

My 240 total is on course and in the past have had decent luck with 60+ gram shafts in r flex. I am just trying to get ideas what other "average joe" have used with this head besides the stock recoil shaft. I'm thinking maybe looking at the aldila proto or the tour blue in r flex. They can be had for a very reasonable price.

I posted this in the other thread but here is more detail. I liked the accuracy of this driver but hated the stock Recoil shaft so I sold it. There was a used one in my GG this weekend with a Red Tie shaft on it and I hit it in the simulator and liked it much better than the Epic, Rogue, or any other driver in the store which I also hit for comparison. So, I’d definitely give this another try with the right shaft - White Tie, Kuro Kage Silver, or Synergy Blue are shafts that I like; however I don’t have the money to just play around with shafts so I’ll have to wait until the right opportunity presents itself.

Thanks for the response. I wanna hear from people who have switched out from the recoil shafts.

Also, I don't have the coin to spend $$ on a shaft.

You may already aware of this but Hurricane Golf has some reasonably priced shafts. They tend not to be the latest models but that doesn't bother me.

There are plenty of shafts reasonably priced that'll fit the Fusion.

Do you have access to a store and/or a launch monitor ?

Without knowing if you're spinning it too much or if your launch is too high or too low it's difficult to recommend anything. "240 total" ain't nearly enough of a "spec" to tell you anything worthwhile.

There is a PGA SS. However, it's difficult to test shafts out when I'm not in the market for a new driver.

My flight( when hitting it well) is a medium launch. I do game another driver - A cobra flyz (playing length 44.5) and use an aldila dvs (r flex). So I was thinking (as i said before) a tour blue or a proto by you shaft. I would think these shafts have a stiffer tip than the stock recoil shaft which might help offset the heavier weight I have in the fusion head.

I have tried quite a few different shafts in my BB Fusion (10.5) in both heavy and regular configurations:

Aldila Rogue I/O Stiff 45.5

Aldila RIP Silver Stiff 44.5

Evenflow Blue stiff 45.5

Mitsubishi C6 Stiff 45.5

I have used both head weights in just about all of these shaft combinations. The best prior to this year was the Alidila RIP Silver, but it's only the only 44 in shaft I have tried. I really like the mitsubishi c6 and considering trimming that one inch. I am not super technical on shafts but the Even Flow Blue did feel way too stiff. My swing speed is probably in the mid 90s

Thanks for the response. I'll take a look at those in r flex. Anyone else out there?

I'm not sure why you're so stuck on "R" flex. You DO realize that one manufacturer's, "R" is another's "S", yes ? and even different models form the same manufacturer may be very close to "R" vs. "S". Not to mention that many fitters believe shaft weight is more important than shaft flex. i.e. you may hit a "55" S better (or worse) than a 65 "R".

Why don't you take your driver into the PGA store and use one of their hitting/practice bays (not their fitting bays). They'll probably let you use the launch monitor and if they're not too busy they'll most likely let you try some different shafts from the Cally demo selection.

At the very least you'll get ball speed, swing speed, launch angle, and some other launch numbers that will help steer you in the proper direction. I would (obviously) suggest that you try "S" as well as "R" shafts. "60" weight class should work pretty well.

Now they most likely will NOT have the shafts you mentioned as they are older models but at least you will get an idea of what shaft(s) work for you and then you can match up your characteristics of that shaft(s) to some older shaft models and get something similar.

But a "Tour Blue" or a "By You Proto" just because it has slightly stiffer tip ? Good luck with that.

edited to add - BTW, here's a post by TollBros you might be interested it - about older shafts - http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/1732644-do-shafts-lose-performance-over-time/page__p__18500834__hl__+significantly?do=findComment&comment=18500834

I received mine Friday. I have been playing a TM 2016 M1 in normal length shaft.

I got the 10.5* with the Recoil 450 Stiff flex heavy short version. Simply put- FANTASTIC! Super easy to hit, super accurate, and gave me great distance as well. One big advantage was that I am playing this at 10.5* (usually I have to loft up to 11.5 or 12), and getting a great ball flight. I am going to experiment with putting my favorite shaft in (Grafalloy Epic), because I have one and the adapter makes it so easy to shange shafts. But for me, it seems ideal. Amazing club!

Only 1 negative- this thing is LOUD! (But if I'm hitting it this well, I'll put up with it.
