Monterey in May 1 day 1 course?

Recommended Posts

So I will be in Monterey mid May with my family. Wife has a conference and we have two younger kids so I got the OK for 1 round in the afternoon fri, sat or sun.

Do I drop the $$$$ on Pebble? Most likely I will be renting sticks as well. Spyglass? Poppy? Pacific Grove?

This will be my first time in the area and it's 50/50 I ever go back.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Remember that for Pebble you have to be staying at one of their hotels to book in advance. Otherwise you have to call the day before. Call early, like 8AM early.

If Pebble is on your bucket list, go for it. Yes, it is a crap ton of money and if it weren't for the history it is absolutely not worth it. But the history trumps that. Full disclosure, I was in Monterey last fall and played Pebble for the first time.

If you don't do Pebble, I'd go for Poppy Hills. Nice layout and fun to play. Much less expensive than either Pebble or Spyglass. Spyglass would be my third choice.

100% disagree. I just played Pebble Beach this year and it was by far the best golfing experience of my and my playing partners life.

Well, I did suggest he go for Pebble as a first choice.

I should clarify my comment. From a pure golf perspective, i.e. architecture, shot value, etc. Pebble is not worth the $$$ compared to other courses IMHO and I've played a lot of the top courses.

As an experience though it is worth the $$$. Part of the experience is playing a course that you've seen some of golfs more historic moments and that is worth it.

I will speak for Pacific Grove, as my avatar pic was taken there. I have not played any of the other courses because I simply cannot afford them. If you have the money such that you can pay Pebble Beach Company prices then go for it, (I think twilight Spanish bay is -only- $160.)

But now to talk about Pacific Grove: It's $70 for a round and a cart on weekends, but the course is very walkable, and only 5900 yards. The front 9 is a basic neighborhood parkland golf course, with some interspersed views of Monterey Bay. The condition of the front 9 is not $70 worth, but close; it plays like an mid-upper tier muni. Then you make the turn and play the 10th, a dinky filler par 3 in the parking lot of a lighthouse. And then you are greeted by the 11th, a downhill borderline drivable par 4 that is just gorgeous. The rest of the course is winding through sand dunes and all holes have a view of the Ocean, lighthouse, or both.

I think if you are ever going to come back, put Pacific Grove on the list to play at some point. If this is it, one-and-done, then splurge for the more upscale properties.

If it's going to be a "long time" before you go back, has to be Pebble.

If your game isn't in great shape come the summer or you'd rather play Pebble with your own gear, then it's whether you just want the best golf, or you still want that coastal/Monterey thing.

I'm a big fan of PG and there are some good holes on the front, but ya you really are there for 11-16 which is class and great fun, but otherwise it does lack quality compared to the others.

take a ride a bit north and go play pasatiempo if you want to save some money. access to mckenzie's are very hard to come by.

This is worth considering. Pasa is a fantastic track.

I am in a similar boat, but will have Pebble and one of the other resort courses (most likely Spyglass) on my calendar for a Tuesday / Wednesday rounds in mid-April. I have to be in SF on Monday AM for a breakfast meeting, but should be able to be on the road by 9:00am. So two questions

1. Should I do Pasatiempo, one of the other Pebble courses on Monday afternoon, or some other option on the drive from SF to Pebble?

2. Are there really interesting options in and around SF that would have me fly out on Sunday morning to play a Sunday afternoon round as well?

I would imagine this will be my only trip to Pebble, as it is just super inconvenient from Boston and if doing this trip for personal pleasure, I'd rather hit Bandon!

1 - Definitely Pasa

2 - No (unless access to privates). Fly out Sun to enjoy the city and see the sights, but no nothing public in town is worth going out of your way for.

Thanks - I might be able to lock in an SF private, but I am assuming no. Is Harding Park not worth it?

It's a solid course and if I lived in the city, with a city card I'd play it often enough, but with only a county discount I play it once a year and enjoy it, but don't feel any huge urgency to play it more than once a year.

Exactly my advice. I just played Poppy for the first time back in November. I liked it more (a lot more) than Spyglass which I played years ago. If you want to drop the money and play Pebble, do it. But Poppy is a really good track and I'd play that over Spyglass.

Pebble is special. To me that's a better course to play with a group. Not sure it would be the same incredible experience as a single pairing up with 3 randoms for 5+ hours. I was fortunate enough to play it with my Dad, a couple of friends and my mom walked the course with us. It was an incredible experience. But a lot of the experience was being able to share that with people special to me. I'm not sure I would drop $600+ (after caddie fees) to only get part of the experience.

Not even close. We simply don't have easy public access to such a course - in good nick anyways - on the West Coast.

I'm exciting about playing it again soon. Most of my rounds on Pasa were during the drought and pre-well, so not always the best shape.

Condition looks pretty darn solid now.

I haven't played Pasa but I have played HP. I would take Pasa 10 out of 10 times over HP without even seeing Pasa. HP was very 'meh' and outside of the a few holes the course is nothing more than OK.

HP was one of the more disappointing big name tracks I have played.

^Think meh is a touch harsh. Once you turn the corner at the top of the hill for the closing 5 holes, that is a very enjoyable stretch IMHO.

It can feel (because it is) back and forthy on the front though. Weekdays for $50 is an excellent deal for residents, much like $175 on the weekend for out of towners is a rip off.

Wild take here but... play a quick round at Sharp Park right after you land or right before you leave. It's 20 minutes from the airport and as someone mentioned, access to Mackenzie's is tough. The genius is still there, you just need to look past the conditioning. It's my favorite stop just off the plane to warm up the swing.

That's a tough one IMO.

I've had some enjoyable rounds out there, especially on the back 9 which is usually in better shape and the couple linksy feeling holes by the barrier; however, I've also been out there when the conditions are been so awful any amount you paid was a ripoff.

For someone visiting from out of town I think it's a step too far to outright recommend Sharp.

Thanks for all the suggestions.....as of today I am going to bring my sticks and pack a carry on and play Pebble. I just do not know if I will be back anytime soon and even though I have said I would never pay $500 plus for a round of golf F it. Too much history and I have been playing Pebble on playstation Tiger Woods for ever. FYI I called and they will be open for public play through early June then shutting down until after the open. Of course things could change but I think I am set on PB.
