Rory's bag changes early 2019

Recommended Posts

Rocking a Tensei Pro White in the driver now, i know hes used it in the 3w for a year or two but hes been a KK and PO guy lately.

Also had steel in his 2i now instead of HZRDUS 105.

Interesting...

Btw, he is the worst wedge player i've seen on tour in a decade. :censored2:

He put the Pro White in the driver at the end of last season. He seemed happy with it then, so I'm not too surprised it made the cut in the M5.

it is amazing to watch him hit driver. it is crazy to think that someone that has that kind of control with a long club is so glitchy with a wedge.

I feel like saying that he missed every putt is a bit misleading. It is not like he really gave himself many good chances.

Agree... left himself with a lot of low make percentage birdie putts. I don't remember seeing many, if any, 3 putts which is what he was REALLY struggling with recently. i.e. he couldn't make the 3-5 foot pars

I thought he looked much more comfortable, stroke looked more natural/flowing, and he looked more confident. Lot of putts were well rolled they just didn't go in the cup. He was starting to look very hesitant and stabbing at it with that anser style putter.

Terrible wedge player and terrible putter (at the moment)... the bad putting is a result of the wedge play.

He's a fabulous chipper...also a result of the terrible wedge play.

If he can't sort the wedges out he's in for a long year

I think what made the poor wedge play really obvious this week is he had so many great drives and how the holes at Kapalua played out left him those little flip wedges and instead of having 1-2 a round he had 7-8 so his weakness with those shots were magnified

This is what confuses me about his game. He has such an underrated short game around the green and out of bunkers, yet cant get it within 10ft from 75 yards. I just dont get why theres such a dramatic difference there. Its like he loses his touch whenever hes in a fairway

Do you think it's because he plays PX 6.5s (fairly stout) in them? I know it's a flex down from his regular iron shafts, but maybe if he used something with a bit more "feel" like S400 or something?

More that he likes to pound the long stuff at the range, and doesn’t practice wedges enough. He needs to talk to DJ and learn about how he went from a terrible wedger to one of the best in double quick time.

He think the poor wedge play is a result/pitfall of his natural swing mechanics. It's like that little reverse hip turn move that he is known for propels his upperbody/hands/club somewhat uncontrollably through the ball making it hard for him to control distance.

Wedge play isn't as much about speed as it is about consistency and repeat ability... I wonder if he could somehow make a swing adjustment to keep the upper and lower body working together/ turning in sync on the less than full swings. He's a great chipper because there isn't much body/rotation involved. He def doesn't lack "feel"

I saw a pic of his bag with a second High Toe...54 I believe. I do remember watching the PGA last summer and one of the commentators mentioning he should switch to a higher spinning ball.

He switched from the TP5x to the TP5 at the start of the Playoffs or PGA last year, which is a higher spin ball. Not sure if he switched back to the 5x this year or stuck with the 5 this year.

In the bag, at the moment:

Obviously he was playing well for 3 days despite being the "worst wedge player in a decade" to end up 2nd going to Sunday.

His problem is his mental game, hence the disappearing act on the final day while playing in the last group.

He needs a caddie that can keep his mental game sharp on Sundays, not just a buddy who will just say "it's ok there's always next shot" or new sport psychologist or gets his money frozen, so he will play like he needs the money... maybe that will push him to his final gear

His wedge troubles are from a lack of spin. He hits moonballs. High launch low spin is his calling card. Great for driving the ball long, tough for wedge control. It's why he hasn't had as much success in the open as he has had in other majors.

Won the open though... Masters still missing..

I think he should try a new swing coach, maybe DJ's?

Not sure what planet you lot are on, was near the lead going into the final round and had flat round to finish. Gives himself more awkward wedge shots than the rest. Some of those world class wedge players finished umpteen shots behind Rory this week. I saw him hit plenty of quality wedges and putts this week, he will come good at the courses he knows

GIVE US BACK OLD Rory. Stop following the $$$$$. You've already got enough of that.

This is my thinking also. I've joked for years, he needs to get back with Jumeirah. He was spectacular with that name on his hat.

More importantly, his woes stem from his putting. Changes putters more than a tart changes knickers. So to speak. The Cameron

pictured was his Harry Potter wand. Get it out the closet and get back in tune with that.

If he is giving himself more awkward wedge shots that then rest then that would tend to suggest that he simply isn't thinking about what he is doing. The sad fact is that we have been waiting for him to come good now since the start of 2017.
