Columbus, Ohio: Accommodation help

Recommended Posts

Part way through planning our big Sept/Oct 19 trip (6 Aussies).

Early October we are playing at Muirfield Village, Scioto and going to an OSU game then flying out of Columbus (4 days). None of us have been there before.

Accommodation seems very pricey at Muirfield Village, I don't particularly like staying at golf resorts/venues (I may be missing something).

We can do hotel or Airbnb. Travelling party are all 40 plus, would be looking for bars/pubs, good restaurants within walking distance, any suggestions on what areas in central Columbus or would you stay elsewhere?

I haven't done a lot of travel in the US except NYC for work. In terms of where to stay we are more downtown/LES than mid town or the park.

Thanks

I would recommend posting this request in the "midwest" section in the "all things OHIO golf" sub forum. Quite a few Columbus area players in that forum should be able to help. Enjoy your time in OHIO!!

So your events are all north/northwest of the city. I would find an airbnb in The Short North. It's a cool area with close proximity to everything. Many of the city's best restaurants are on High Street in the Short North. Depending on where the house is, you would have quick access to these restaurants and bars by walking. It also gives you easy access (possibly walking if in the southern parts of SN) to the Arena District which is a good area for bar hopping.

The 'Shoe is 5-10 minutes directly north so that makes getting to the Buckeye game relatively easy (though it's really not an easy place to get in and out of). For the Buckeye game, I would consider taking an Uber and once it gets within a mile of the stadium and traffic gets bad, I would just hop out and walk in.

Scioto is 20 minutes at most from The Short North. It's close by but it's not the easiest place to get to because in the middle of a very old suburb (Upper Arlington). So's not like right off a freeway exit. You kind of have to fish through the community to get to it.

Muirfield Village will be the longest trek. It's mostly freeway driving but it will take you 35 or so minutes from The Short North.

Other areas to look at: German Village (south of downtown but really good night life and restaurants... everything, however, would be another 10 minutes away). Upper Arlington (smack in the middle of all of your events. It's kind of sandwiched between Dublin (where Village is) and Ohio State. UA, however, doesn't have walking access to anything and you'll be in the middle of a suburb... great place to live, not an ideal spot for a guys trip). Dublin is where Muirfield is. There is some night life and bars in Dublin, especially the new downtown Dublin area. But Dublin is also a quiet comminuity. Plus it's a trek getting to the buckeye game.

EDIT -- I'm not sure if The Short North will come up on Airbnb or not. But if you go to googlemaps, you can search Short North Arts District. You'll see it's a very small area. But if you are in the cooridor it will be good. I kind of consider that who area The Short North even though it's not. If possible, I would target the square of Neil Ave (N/S running road on the west side of the square) to 5th ave (E/W running road on the north side of the square) to Summit Ave (n/s running road on the east side of the square) to Goodale (e/w running road on the south side of the square). The closer to the High St the better. The further south in the square the better. Absolute ideal, prime, location would be somewhere very close to Goodale Park. Ton of great restaurants and bars right there. That will give you walking access to everything in the short north and the arena district. Plus super easy access to the freeway systems. North of 5th ave gets sketchy in a hurry. East of Summit gets even more sketchy. West of Neil is nice but makes walking to bars/restaurant a little too far.

Short north, arena district is where the most restaurants and night life are concentrated. I would focus on staying there if possible.

Old downtown Dublin is nice and worth a visit but I wouldn’t stay there.

Brewery district just south of downtown on high street has some nice places to go as well.

Your 3 places you are going are in red. The “short north” is in yellow. The Arena district is just south of the short north. Lots of business hotels there as it’s right on the north side of downtown. The Arena District is named for the Nationwide Arena where the Columbus Blue jackets play. They also have concerts there. Depending on the weekend you choose perhaps you could see a game or a concert. Sorry for the black spot. And no, although it would be very convenient for your visit, my place is not available as an Airbnb. ; )

Look for anything on or near high street just north of downtown. I don’t know how how Airbnb actually works, but if you can search for Short North, Victorian Villiage, Italian Villiage, or Arena District, any of those would work.

I would consider renting a big SUV if you don’t want to Uber everywhere.

If you like prime aged beef, Hyde Park is in the Short North and Jack Ruby’s is in Arena district. Both are obscenely expensive but extremely good. Definitely a good splurge visit while on vacation.

If you do get to an Ohio State Game just make sure to get there very early, go to the main parking lot, wear OSU gear, and you will be invited to party at an endless number of pregame tailgate parties. Pace yourself....it can get ugly. It’s a long day.

Super stuff...…….thanks for taking the time, much appreciated.

Goodale Park in the Short North with a few other options, I'm onto it.

Jag, thanks for the tip about the OSU game (I'm pumped and by the sounds of it, probably pissed), will make sure the other fools don't get confused about which team they are supporting and turn up in full Rickie orange :D

I would second staying in the Arena District/Short North/Downtown - though downtown proper isn't very lively or walkable to bars and restaurants. A few other options - Grandview Yard area has some hotels and is close to Scioto and OSU and has bars and restaurants nearby. Or, in the burbs, maybe Polaris or Easton - both have a nice Hilton Hotel and there are lots of dining choices and chain-type bars. Columbus is fairly easy and quick to get around on the weekends - Uber will be really busy on an OSU game day but not impossible and the OSU campus area will be busy. Have a great time - love both MV and Scioto.
