Hickory Golf Clubs

I read a great article in this months Golf World (UK) about the Hickory Open and playing with Hickory golf clubs. It sounds like a lot of fun.

 

It got me thinking about all the equipment we have now, the costs of it, our obsessions with how far we hit the ball, and I'm thinking it would be really refreshing to do something different where we can simply enjoy the game with lower expectations, in terms of both scores and distance.

 

I'm an absolute gear nerd, I have to admit, but has the time come to get away from all that and return to the roots of the game?

 

Surely there is another path to enjoying the game......

 

What does everyone think? Anyone else starting to feel like this?

 

 

 

Can anyone recommend anywhere in the UK where I can get a decent set of clubs (they all have names!) at a reasonable cost?

Around 2007, I bought a half set of refurbished clubs from GlenCall in Scotland. Talked to Robert, really a nice fellow. Clubs were beautiful, and authentic antique. I play them every so often.

 

I've repaired a couple, but all in all, the clubs have held up well. Still look great.

 

Haven't needed to buy more.

Welcome to the classic side Jim, sounds like you're thoughts are aligned with many on here, vintage golf takes you back to the purity of the game, more skill involved and it's not just about how far you can blast the ball.

 

We're not as fortunate as those living in America in that classic clubs are harder to come by in the UK and really good ones are very rare, but there's a lot of stuff you can find on ebay to introduce you to vintage golf, and you can even go hickory should you want to go further back.

 

Below is a very good condition set currently on ebay comprising Wilson blades (I'd guess 3 to SW although it doesn't say) and wooden woods 1, 3, 4 & 5 (I think they're laminated rather than persimmon but these make great play clubs at less cost than persimmon). The grips look like they'd need replacing sooner rather than later but as a cheap introduction to the vintage game I don't think you'd go far wrong, a full set for less than half the price of a new hybrid, what's not to like?

There's even a vintage bag included, if it wasn't for the fact that I prefer UK made junk I'd be very tempted to place a bid on these.

In fact the more I look at them the more they look an absolute steal!
