Modus 105s Hardstepping

Mandarax

Recommended Posts

This is my first post on GolfWRX so if it is in the wrong section or if it is a duplicate post (I have not seen one that managed to answer my question) then please let me know and I will resolve it.

I currently bag Nippon 950gh stiff and although it is the best feeling shaft I have played, I consider the ball flight slightly too high and I often have misses to the left. With that being said, I would like to make a switch to the Modus 105. I think the increased weight (subtle difference) and stiffer tip section will help bring the flight to what I want. I don't have access to a trackman but hit my 9i ~ 150, 8i ~ 160, and 7i ~ 170 yards (My gapping is pretty consistent with this throughout my iron set). From other posts I have read, the Modus 105 is so smooth that it is either confused for soft to flex or it is soft to flex (I don't know which is considered "right"). Should I hard step the Modus 105 stiff or play them straight into my bag?

First up welcome to WRX

My numbers are very similar to yours and I have spent a fair amount of time testing Nippon shafts and currently use the 950gh stiff. I could certainly see how for the wrong player it would launch too high. I have a smooth transition and for me whilst the 105 lowers the trajectory a little for some reason I actually hit that shaft more to the left than the 950!

The profile on the Modus 105 is different to the slightly heavier 120. It does not play as smooth and seems better suited to a hitter than a swinger so I would not automatically be looking to hardstep unless you have a violent transition.

The only answer is going to be to find somewhere you can actually try them. I wanted something a little lighter than the Modus 120 I had been gaming for years and was convinced the 105 would be the answer but did not get on with it at all. Don't rule out the 1050 or 1150 in the NS range, both might achieve what you are looking for and I would also try the Modus 120 alongside the 105 as the weight difference is subtle but the feel is very different. Shimada shafts also have some great options in that 105 - 115g weight region.

Easy answer is to nip into a store with a well stocked fitting cart (both shafts are in the Mizuno fitting cart) and do a side by side test of the two shafts. You can see from the first reply that options and results are very personal. I for example have never got on with the NS Pro 950 and found the Modus 105 much better. I would also describe it as smoother feeling than the True Temper equivalents.

There is a mirade of other shafts in the fitting cart so if the Modus doesn’t suit there is likely to be something else to your liking.

Tour120 feels soft to flex but Tour105 is on par. Your distance numbers are pretty solid but if you're looking to maintain similar 950 feel with less spin I'd say try the Tour105S straight in. Can also look at the Titleist exclusive 105T but I think the Tour105S will lower the spin more than the 105T.

From other posts I have read, the Modus 105 is so smooth that it is either confused for soft to flex or it is soft to flex (I don't know which is considered "right").

There is no standard for flex so there is no "right" or "wrong". Just different subjective opinions from players with different perspectives and past experiences with shafts of different profiles.

Which also means that there is no real way to accurately predict which opinions will match yours when you finally get a chance to try the particular shaft.

With those distances (and swing speeds) even a 105 gm shaft is generally considered unusually light (which could be contributing to the higher than desirable flight). Most golfers at those speeds would be in the 120-130 gm range for shaft weight. Now everyone is different but I'd spend some time trying to demo some heavier shafts to make sure the lighter weight really is the way to go. You may even find that the heavier weight will be more effective at managing the trajectory than the shaft profile.

Thanks for the helpful replies!

I used to play 120-130 gram shafts but herniated two of my lumbar discs. The lighter weight shafts definitely helped my back out after long practice sessions or at the end of a round where I normally start to become a little fatigued and lose form. I used to have a quick transition but after moving to the 950gh stiffs my transition has become quite smooth and my ball striking has improved a lot (I might even go so far as to say that hurting my back actually improved my game).

I would like to stay in that light weight range but don't want the 105's in x flex to prevent me from working too hard to load the shaft and loose my smooth transition. It seems like the slightly stiffer tip section and marginal increase in weight might be enough to keep that 950gh feeling but bring my flight and spin numbers down a hair.

105's have the same overall stiffness as 950's other than the tip is a good bit stiffer so the flight should be a little lower. Neither is particularly low flighting though and both are softer than something like Dynamic Gold (the yardstick); 950 in particular is know to flight super high. Titleist has some good info about shafts that you may want to check out...https://www.titleist...ing/golf-shafts
