Dave - how much are you trying to retool your swing right now? It sounds like you're not happy with your pivot, shoulder rotation and takeaway (unless I'm taking the last couple months of posts out of context)?

You are correct, not happy with any of it. Competition season is over so want to work on my swing flaws over the winter months, of which there are several big ones.

God bless you being a UK scratch and having the desire to improve that much. It's a long journey working on the swing.

*edit* I say "UK scratch" because what would that be over in the states? +9 or so ;)

Massive improvements in takeaway and overall width by doing the water bottle drill (put a water bottle behind ball and slowly brush it backwards as you take it away). felt like swing was more in sync, can't argue with the evidence below. Definitely building this into the backswing pelvis work.

Haha thanks, to quote Rory Mcilroy, better never stops. It is a long journey which never really has an end point, just a slightly easier to navigate road hopefully. + figures is the goal next year and improving the consistency of my ball striking is going to be a big help, ball striking use to be my real strength but it has suffered this year, got into many bad habits through not playing and practicing much when little one arrived, now comes the time to fix them. Along with the putting work I'm putting in, no pun intended, hoping next year will be a good one.

and think UK scratch is only +7

I was surprised at how squared the tees kept the putter face. Think the brain knows that a open/shut blade would catch a tee.

haha, I haven't played with many who knock it past me so laugh when I get abuse off shorter hitters, including one 50 year old pro who I was doing by about 50 yards

1st round of the Hinge Trophy qualifying at Littlestone yesterday, came 3rd with a level par round of 71, 5 birdies 5 bogeys. Struggled off the tee until middle of the back 9, iron and wedge play was solid, putted well. bogeys came from 2 penalty drops off the tee, 1 drive and 1 3 wood, 2 3 putts and 1 missed up and down.

Very happy with the round as this was my first full round of any kind in 2 months. Pencil claw grip with the putter performed admirably, rolled in some very good putts especially in the mid 5-15ft range which I normally struggle with. Holed some good swinging short putts too, find this grip actually feels like its easier to start the ball on line on breaking putts, no guiding of the ball towards the hole with the hands as it feels like my stroke is all shoulders. Had a few really good lag putts in the 40-60ft range that were all within 2 feet. The 2 3 putts I would put more down to mental error of not trusting the big downhill swinging putts to be that slow, the greens were quite slow, mentally on a links green with huge undulations I didn't let myself make a free stroke. Both times leaving myself horrible downhill 6ft sliders. Then battled back well to birdie 2 of the last 3, including a lovely 10 footer on the last.

Equipment wise I have taken the P770s out the bag, I'm not sure if its a subconscious thing to do with the heads coming off but having hit the range quite a few times in the last 2 weeks I really don't enjoy the way they interact with the ground, feel very clunky especially in the 5,6 & 7 irons. I enjoyed the slightly lower flight but just wasn't sold on them. Put my old x forged in the bag, while the flight is a little high I can't fault their performance on the range and in yesterdays round. Perhaps I should just stick with them and the grass isn't always greener?

It could be largely down to them being MOI matched and that is what makes such a big difference, I would like to find an iron/shaft to give me a slightly more penetrating flight so will probably try and find somewhere to do a fitting of multiple brands at some point over winter to see if anything really does outperform the x forged and I'm not going to buy just for the sake of having new irons, I know how un-wrx of me! Will visit my local club maker who does the MOI matching and see how close my driver is to the irons as I still hit that so well, I reckon it's probably very close, the 3 wood isn't as consistent so would be interesting to see where that is.

Milled grind wedges are also out the bag, love them for chipping but didn't like the feel on longer shots. Gone back to my old forged gap wedge to tie in with the set and put the T7 54 & 60 back in the bag. Hit several good pitches with the 60 and good full shots with the 54. I won't lie I got the taylormade wedges so the bag was full taylormade but I'm now fully in the belief I'm just going to use whats best for me. The T7s are currently working very well.

I hadn't played an individual competition with a card in my hand since the start of July, and it showed. I haven't worked on my putting or stroke since then either I don't think. With the little man's arrival obviously my tournaments are going to be few and far between for quite a while but I believe there are 3 main steps I can take to help going forward.

1. I'm going to fix my visio putting mat to a board and use it at least once a week to work on my stroke.

2. should hopefully install my putting green and net in the garden in the next month or so, which will hopefully give me more time to practice even if its only 10 mins a day a couple of times a week.

3. Need to consciously think about pre shot routine more on every shot, mainly the decision part. Think more about the target, where I need to leave it and what shot to hit etc.

Hopefully these things will help me play better even when I'm not going to be playing a lot. I haven't generally got to play a lot as it is the last year or 2 but generally play quite well when I did, now it's going to be even less I really need to focus on my course management when I do get a card in my hand.

1 & 2 definitely seem to be helping with the putting. Even though its 10 minutes or so indoors in the lounge a few days a week, at least its something and it's consistent.

3. Thought I did a very good job of this in the round, i was hitting my irons well and have a tendency to go flag hunting when I am but many times I was playing for the fat part of the green on trickier shots etc, and also off the tee, even though driver and 3 wood were a bit off for most of the day a lot of the misses were in areas that left me a 2nd shot. Also using 2 iron when I could.

Little video update of swing, pelvis backswing work combined with getting the face more open in takeaway has me hitting it solidly and more consistently than for a long time. Ball flight from working on these changes has turned to straight or a baby fade. With the feeling of the face being wide open it feels like my body can actually rotate through and get the path left. Whereas with the shut face I had to dump under more. Currently feels like I can swing around myself to the left as much as I want and it's not going left, this is a very nice feeling to have. Couple of stills from the DTL view show the face is in a more stable position and less rolled over than in recent times. Starting to be able to trust this shape with driver, think that was my biggest issue off the tee on Sunday, not trusting the shape as it's been an awful long time since I felt comfortable aiming at the left edge of the fairway.

Seemingly have less tilt at impact from face on too which is good. left leg could do with clearing out the way better at impact and want to remove the bigish loop from backswing plane to downswing plane, most likely the cause of slight struggles with 1/2 and 3/4 wedges of late.

Been intrigued for a while to try a specialist pitching wedge rather than the PW from my iron set. Drewtaylor was the first to really open my eyes to it and he raves about the extra control it gives. This is something I feel I lack with my set PW, picked up a T7 46* wedge in a good deal on ebay so will adjust it to specs and see how it plays. Initial thoughts are it looks and feels much easier to play partial shots with, and much nice to look at being a smaller head.

Probably will go shorter but less risk of fliers. Like you said better for partial shots, good call

Yeah full swing distance is a concern with it, but hopefully its within a couple of yards to keep my gappings good and the added control on in between yardages & flighting of the ball will make it an improvement to the bag. That's the hope anyway!

  • 3 weeks later...

Had a follow up 3d lesson but this time with Mark Bull himself who the coach at my club bought the 3d system from and was doing a day of lessons at my club. Mark is renowned for his coaching and biomechanics feed back and coaches a lot of tour players so couldn't pass up the opportunity. Mark also has more 3d sensors, and the wrist one proved invaluable in quickly locating what Mark thinks is the main issue in my swing.

Basically I take the club away in his words too much with the hands and my right wrist goes quickly into flexion, this causes my right elbow to bend and contributes to my other swing faults. Mark thinks fixing this piece will help greatly in ironing out my other flaws. The 3d system showed straight away that I thrusted less with my pelvis in the backswing and got more ribcage rotation on the downswing after working on the takeaway. Here are a few pictures, all be it from very bad angles, and a few video clips from the lesson.

45192745555_b060b42b8a_h.jpg

45192745525_a71eca6bda_h.jpg

although slightly exaggerated this is my old move, note right elbow position.

45380482994_edf3d93c86_h.jpg

The feeling for what I need to work on is that my wrists hinge vertically whilst the club moves on a line directly back from the ball. Which feels very wristy and like the club is more 'outside' going back. But in reality its not. This then also puts the club on a much better plane half way back - something I noted needed improvement

Although in 2d it didn't look too bad on 3d it showed up, the way my wrists were working that is what causes my face to be fairly closed at the top. New takeaway allows me to get into a much better position at the top, right elbow much more infront of me and in what I would call a 'waiter' position.

It feels very counter intuitive as it feels much wristier and narrow at the start of my swing, but then this enables it to be wider at the top. My swing has always felt quite wristy and narrow but then not wide at the top. So its very odd trying to feel narrower early which then results in more width. Stupid game.

It was indeed, I love the 3D stuff, very interesting learning and seeing the graphs and relationships as to how the body moves. Mark's knowledge of the anatomy and biomechanics was amazing.

So is this winter dedicated to technique improvement? Any other off-season goals?

seem to spend my whole life dedicated to technique improvement

but yes off-season goals as follows:

- make the technical changes to takeaway and improve backswing pivot and therefore improving downswing.

- Am aiming to practice a lot smarter, make lots of slow motion swings etc, than just bashing balls which I always have a habit of falling into doing. I do spend a lot of time making mirror swings and slow motion practice swings at home.

- Continue using visio putting board a couple of times a week to work on stroke. Get more and more comfortable with pencil grip.

- lose some weight in the new year

- Get through 2nd qualifying round to the final of the Hinge trophy again.

what goals do other people have for the coming off season?

- continue

Hope everyone had a great Christmas, had a result in a Christmas competition at my club, 3 goes at getting a ball in the putt-out trainer, those who do then go into a draw for a putt-out trainer and mat..... and I won!

So I now have a nice little putting setup in the bedroom, up quite a few times through the night with little one so found I'm doing more putting practice with it there than I have been so that's good.

Pencil grip still feels great, played crazy golf at Swingers in London yesterday and friend videod a hole in one I made, first time I've seen my stroke since switching to the pencil grip and it's looking a lot better, much more shoulder orientated and stroke length massively improved.

Think my celebrations need more work although I blame the alcohol

  • 2 weeks later...

Had been working diligently on my takeaway and arm structure from the 3D lesson and truth be told 5 weeks of it had me hitting the ball terribly. I was just hitting it everywhere on the face and therefore either left or right, woeful with driver and really bad with 3 wood. On video I now had very little depth and not much body rotation in the backswing, something Dan (iteach) has told me before I need as my first downswing move is to move outwards towards the ball. Looking back through the videos from the lesson the position he got me in had very little lead arm depth. This had me concerned, whilst I agree my face needed work, which I was already working on, I'm not sure it works that well for my swing. I had the 2nd round of the Hinge upcoming and had zero confidence, was honestly thinking of withdrawing it was that bad.

The 2nd round was sunday just gone, the Monday before I sat down and honestly thought about when I was swinging and playing my best and what I was doing in my swing. That was in the first half of 2017 and I was working with Zane Scotland and had been working on lots of punisher drills and no throw type shots. Also takeaway being more one piece. All sort of GG stuff really.

So I spent last week doing lots of punisher drills, also working on takeaway at the same time keeping the alignment stick touching left hip & leg, and lots of no throws focusing on left knee separation from the right and started hitting the ball really solidly. This continued throughout the week and actually had me feeling good going into Sundays round.

In the competition I drove the ball fantastically, missed 2 fairways all day, hit driver on every par 4 and 5, one was 10 yards right and the other was down the right centre and kicked into the right fairway trap. Where I struggled all day was with distance control with irons and wedges. This was my first proper round with some Mizuno MP 18 SCs with project x LZ 6.0. Just couldn't get the distances right. In hindsight probably not the best time to put a new set in the bag but wanted to see how they performed as still searching for an iron with a touch lower flight. Short game was average which I expected with very little short game practice. Putting was fairly good, missed 1 short putt from a bad stroke but made a few good 4-5 footers. Hit a lot of good longer putts but nothing dropped.

Shot 76 in the end which isn't too bad and good enough to get me through to the final round at Royal St. Georges, just need to hope it doesn't get frozen off like last year!

I wish I'd never looked into getting new irons

:)

not in a good way! :-(

think I'm going to have to book in for another fitting somewhere that does multiple club manufacturers and see what that fitting says.

Not many places around like that though, not that I would trust that aren't a retail shop trying to sell.

Dave - get yourself some Mizuno's can call it a day.

:drinks:

I've got some, currently MP18 SC's, whilst I like the look and feel and the shaft is a bit more penetrating than the pxi I'm just not convinced by the distances from them. Probably doesn't help that I got supplied & fitted into the wrong shafts in the blades earlier in the year and they went nowhere.

the only good thing equipment wise is a tried the p790 4 iron again and was striping it, so think that will take a place in the bag but really want to get this iron dilemma that im in done and dusted asap so I can get used to them before the season starts.

Anyone have any recommendations for south east England, preferably kent
