set up or swing change - golf round question

Recommended Posts

trying to make a set up change resulting in a swing/feel change and it honestly feels like I'm starting all over again but at a much faster improvement speed.

I'm going to do it till I get it, but my question is do I commit and try my best to play a 18 with this 3 out of 4 unplayable shot shape or go back to my old swing till I get the new swing at the range first?

how did everyone else do it?

have a round booked for sat and started worrying on the drive home yesterday from the range.

Thanks in advance.

What exactly is the change? Just curious. I tried making a change and gave up on it. I was having zero fun on the course. Decided to tighten things up a little, work on my short game and now I'm playing well again and enjoying the game.

FYI: my attempted change was going from a strong power fade to a draw. I Just couldn't do it, so I started paying attention to smaller details in my swing and it really helped. Good luck!

Also going through a big swing change, here's my 2c:

Play golf swing on the range, play golf on the course.

Work the drills and swing change mechanics in PRACTICE. Enjoy golf when you get out on the golf course.

For me, I'm trying to cure my open club face and get my shaft shallowed and path moving closer to square to target or slightly right of target. When I play golf I still see a fade and my misses are slices. But the more I practice the more I see the creep of the drills and range time. More closed club face, more shots moving left, more Pulls from closed club face and a path left of target - all what I consider good.

The fruits of the practice are paying off, and I am still improving my scores and enjoying the round when I get out there. This goes back to the "swing your swing" thing. If you show up and your missing short, take more club! Don't try and hammer it. If your missing right at your tuesday league, aim further left!

That being said, if you have the luxury of playing 4-5 rounds a week and the discipline to shank and hit shots 100 yrds OB on the course, by all means get those practice rounds in because you will improve confidence standing over the ball trying to take that new swing!

Athletic, complex motions are SUBCONSCIOUS mind, not concious mind. Your new swing will show up on the course when it is ready to.

I think having a pre-shot routine, where for 10 seconds you can ingrain the "Feelz" to encourage whatever change you are working on to show up in your real swing, is important.

That way, when you're playing a round, you don't have to think too much about it before you pull the trigger. Easier said than done, but I found myself to be able to bring out the "new swing" at the course this way faster.

Plus, i think you just need to shoot your handicap 6 out of 20 rounds without penalizing your index (correct me guys if i'm wrong). That gives you some margin of error

I just accept there is some growing pain associated with any swing change when playing a round, and just bring my cheapest set of golf balls for that round :D

I seriously felt a urge to give up yesterday too. But, my instructor was really clear on the changes, how to check myself, how to take a step back when needed, confirmed what the initial results will be, how long it would take, and which club to hit 7 billion balls(practice) with. So I cant stop till I get it. Now that I think of it, those words were deep lol.
