Questions about Dallas Golf Company and a recent purchase

I’m looking for some information regarding the Dallas Golf Company. I’ve looked for reviews but can’t find anything recent. I recently purchased from this company a new set of Nike VR-S Covert 2.0 irons (8-AW). They were advertised as brand new. After receiving the irons and inspecting them, I noticed that the shafts aren't labeled in any way whatsoever. Also, the ferrules look different that the ferrules that were on new sets of this iron. In addition, the grips aren't the same grips that were on new sets of this iron. Instead they are a plain looking grip that is non-branded. (My comparison is based on extensive reviews of pictures and videos of this iron when it was first released by Nike and subsequently reviewed by various publications and in multiple videos.) So, I'm wondering what I really purchased here. I contacted the company with my concerns and received a reply with the following information:

“All the components in the club are new. We received this as a bulk order of clubs and components from Nike, as a warehouse clear-out when they closed their doors. Some came fully assembled, some did not. These, we received as components and assembled them here. These are absolutely authentic clubs.”

I suspected that the club heads were from Nike but that the other components were not, but I contacted the company to follow up for further information. For one, are all of the components of the club items that were purchased from Nike or just the club heads? Are these the same shafts that were originally used for new sets of these irons or are they a different shaft? How do I know what they are (including the flex) if they are completely unlabeled? If they are not the original shaft that was used with new sets of this club, what shaft are they and what are the specs? What about the grips since they are non-branded?

I received a second reply with this information:

“We received the heads from Nike, and constructed them with what we had in stock. The shaft is the FST Pro Red 115. The (steel) stock shaft was the True Temper Dynalite 105. The grips are a velvet style, non-branded.”

I guess I received what I suspected once I opened the box—clubs with Nike heads (still in plastic) that were assembled with miscellaneous other components. That’s not what I thought I was originally getting, however. I thought I was purchasing an authentic new set of these irons that someone had in surplus.

Is this a standard practice for some companies? Alternatively, am I getting taken advantage of in this case? I have the option of returning them and getting my money back. I know it is a club from 2014 and the cost for the set was low (approximately $20 per club), so perhaps it is still a reasonable purchase. I looked for reviews of the shaft used but I’m not savvy enough to evaluate it effectively.

My current irons are Nike VRS irons and I like them a lot. I purchased the Covert 2.0s as a secondary set and because I like Nike irons, so getting a “new” set at limited cost was too tempting to pass up.

Again, I’m wondering if I’m getting a raw deal and am better off sending them back or perhaps I made a decent purchase because the shafts in these clubs are of similar quality to the original stock shafts used with these clubs when they were initially distributed. I can’t hit the clubs to test them out before deciding to keep or return them, so I have to decide based on other input. The grips aren’t of concern because I will likely replace them anyway.

Any input regarding this situation and/or the validity of this company would be appreciated.

I don’t see a problem

I knew Nike’s Uk operation and the heads all came from Nike but the shafts etc were third party

I think you have a new set of Nike clubs simple as that as long as the components are new don’t see a problem

Also when Nike shut they bulk sold all there stock assemble and non assemble

Ask questions first.

You got brand new discontinued clubs as advertised.

Play them or take a $15 hit to return them. No 'raw deal'.

I believe Dallas golf took a bunch of left over inventory from Nike when they closed shop and have since then been selling them off. Other companies do this as well (ie get heads, assemble with their own components, and resell), so it isn't a unique model for Dallas golf. Hurricane golf and some ebay retailers do similar things

At $20/club I don't think you got a raw deal in any way, shape, or form. Especially since the listing clearly says they are FST shafts

I guess the description matches the purchase. I have purchased multiple clubs from them and have been quite happy. They use actual pictures, which is nice. I have to admit that I liked them just a tad better before they went to full blown ebay though. Their pricing was unreal prior to this.

Dallas Golf is legit, and their Nike listings are straightforward and it's clear they are components based on the non-stock shafts and grips. Just need to do the research before buying.

Seems like the buyer didn’t read the description. Nothing he can really be upset about since it’s right there. Just play the clubs.

As others have said, they bought up a bunch of iron, wedge, and putter heads from Nike when they left the hard goods business. They build the clubs in house and re-sell them. They’re good folks to deal with. I’ve had nothing but positive experiences.

I just posted in the putters forum about a Yes putter I bought from them. It's listed as new but clearly just assembled components - the shaft is unlabeled and the grip is not the original grip (it's a very cheap, generic velvet grip).

All the components are new and I love the putter (after replacing the grip), but I guess someone might be expecting a "new" club to be the same club they would get from the manufacturer and not a collection of new parts assembled by someone else.

This right here. I've purchased several items from them on eBay and it's always as described. They've bent the lie for me as well on a few wedges and turnaround time was pretty quick as well. As some posters mentioned above, they use the actual pictures and their descriptions are detailed, if you read them thoroughly. Some listings look the same, but read the description and you can tell it's a different assembled set (shaft, flex, grip,etc.). They're one of the sellers on eBay I wouldn't hesitate to buy from. I think in your situation, if you're unhappy with the order, follow the return procedures whatever they may be.

I would just return them.

Why? He got exactly what he ordered. Description says velvet style grip which customer got, also says they’re shafted with the FST which he got. Nothing to really file a claim about.

A few points to consider:

1.You got exactly what the listing stated you would get.

2.You say you can’t find reviews. They have over 262,000 eBay feedback reviews and 99.7% are positive. Extremely good for eBay.

3. It’s clear you have no idea what shaft you should even be using so how can you be irritated you got a “generic” FST shaft?

They make the shafts for KBS. Perhaps you’ve heard of them?

4. You would not be able to buy the heads, shafts, and grips yourself and make them for $20 a piece. It is an extremely good deal.

I bought VR Pro Combo 8-PW from their Ebay store recently. Came with those same grips, heads were in plastic. They were advertised as having True Temper Uniflex shafts, but they came with Nippon shafts instead. Plan on reshafting them with Project X shafts anyways. Not bad for $71 shipped.

Thanks for everyone’s input. It was helpful overall.

A primary reason for concern was that the clubs came with shafts that had absolutely no labeling. As such, I had no way of determining what shafts they really were. Thus the reason for asking about the quality of the company. The reviews of the company that I did find on this website were less-than-stellar for the most part, but were also rather old. As such, that is why I was seeking updated information about the company.

Thanks to those of you that affirmed the legitimacy of Dallas Golf. That information alleviated any fears I had regarding whether or not the components were actually what they were supposed to be since there was no way of telling due to the absence of labeling.

I’m not a big eBay user, so that’s not where I went to try to find reviews of the company. The online search that I performed to find reviews took me to this website. I haven’t posted before but I have been a consistent GolfWRX reader for quite some time. Plenty of people on this website seem to be knowledgeable on various topics, so reviews of the company from GolfWRXers would have had more value for me regardless. Hence the reason for asking about the company on this forum.

Jagpilotohio: I can’t find anywhere in my first post to match your ‘irritated you got a “generic” FST shaft’ wording. Hopefully the actual concern I had and was seeking to alleviate has been clarified. And yes, I do know the relationship between FST and KBS. I just wasn’t comfortable enough to evaluate the extent to which the shaft that came in the clubs I received approximated the shaft that originally was paired with these club heads (assuming that is what the unlabeled shafts actually were). Hence the specific shaft question.

Sparky14: Thanks for commenting on the relative quality of the FST Pro 115 shaft. That feedback was reassuring and appreciated.

I received the information that I needed to feel good about the purchase even though there were some initial questions, so thanks to all of you that helped with that.

Dallas Golf does this a lot. If you read some of their Driver offerings, you will see (for example) a new OEM head with an aftermarket shaft installed and new aftermarket grips. The shaft is typically listed in their ads so I am surprised they did not list the Nike irons with FST shafts. All that said, FST shafts are a KBS product and are really good shafts. You made out!

I live in Dallas and I buy the majority of my golf equipment. The are locally owned and wonderful to deal with and always very honest in my experience. I've seen those on ebay and they really are a great deal. Even their replies were straight forward.

And trust me, they got a ton of the Nike items from their Fort Worth warehouse when Nike got out of the hard goods golf business.

Enjoy the clubs. They are a great deal from a reputable golf store.
