Along these lines. Why doesn’t him hosting or advertising a tournament using his likeness as a golfer endanger his AM status ? I know it’s a grayish area. But am i the only one who sees it as close to the line ?

I’m a curry fan for what it’s worth.

And thankfully that scraps the talk of a tour event in Alameda...great renovation at that course, but tour event???? no way.

It is a shame the tour does not have an event at a venue properly between SF and SJ on a calendar slot that makes sense. Having the "clambake" and the Safeway doesn't cut it for me.

Good point / question. Maybe the USGA police will look into that after they are done getting to the bottom of the Apple Watch scandal with Lucy Li. OMG, a 16 year old was in an Apple commercial!!!

you don't think an amateur potentially using their likeness for significant profits is an issue the usga should've investigated? i get it you're simply against the rule, but if that's the case be against the rule. don't blame the usga for looking to enforce the rule.

I know Alameda was initially considered, but I believe they ended up moving on to Lake Merced (where the LPGA Swinging Skirts was previously held, if I'm not mistaken). Of course this all happening before the cancellation announcement.

What specific rule would he be violating? Aren't violations typically for prize money? Is there one regarding advertising fees?

Also, just curious why it really matters? Is Curry going to try to win the U.S. Amateur?

It seems to me that using his likeness has a lot more to do with his fame from playing basketball, also. Not from being a golfer.

From http://www.usga.org/rules-hub/amateur-status/amateur-status-faq-d8bb60a9.html

"What are the most common examples of breaches of the Rules of Amateur Status?

  • Working as a golf professional
  • Holding membership in a Professional Golfers’ Association (e.g., PGA of America)
  • Entering a competition as a professional
  • Playing for prize money, including qualifiers for such competitions
  • Giving instruction for compensation"

Well. Was comparing it to the 16 year old young lady who made the commercial for a company. The USga is about to pull her am status. In that case it was stated that using ones likness to promote a product even for free was grounds to lose am status.

Just wondered about curry. Im nkt saying he’s in danger. I’m asking.

Plenty of old time celebs (amateurs) had their names on PGA Tour events (Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Dean Martin, Ed McMahon, Danny Thomas, Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Gleason, Glen Campbell, Andy Williams, etc) and their am status was never an issue.

Curry plays the American Century celebrity tournament as an amateur? He also played the Web event as an amateur?

He doesn’t need the money, but I didn’t know he was concerned about his amateur status.

Significant profit? For who? Only Apple stands to profit and it won't be much because Lucy L closes her rings.

I don't have a problem with the rule, I have a problem with the uneven application of the rule and loose interpretation. Like many other "rulings", the USGA certainly doesn't do themselves any favors by bungling up these things. Why bother even making it public? No way the USGA denies Lucy's opportunity to play at Augusta.

Don't know if Curry is as concerned as Bladehunter is over his amateur status.

Did any money go into Curry's bank account for his golf?
