Driver and iron swings

Hi All,

I’m a proponent of it being the same swings just different setups and ball positions throughout the bag.

The questions I’d like feedback on are:

1) do you think it’s the same swing?

2) do you all swing your irons as hard as you would your driver? Say a stock 7 iron, feels the same speed as it would if a driver was in your hands, as far as tempo and effort of the swing.

I bring this question up, as recently I was on the launch monitor, and I got far better results pretending my irons were my driver and just giving them about all I had.

I think there has to be some compensation for hitting the ball on an upward trajectory for drivers. Moving the ball forward in your stance so that it's in front of your low spot without changing anything in your swing means that impact is further along the swing path. That means more time for the face to close and an increase in out-to-in / decrease in in-to-out. So a straight shot with irons would result in a pull with the driver.

Also how does someone who grounds all their clubs at address avoid taking a divot with the driver? They can't be making the same swing otherwise they'd take a divot just before the tee.

So I don't think it's different in the sense of learn one swing for the driver, one swing for everything else. But there has to be some kind of adjustment made it seems. Also - most people are good with one, less so with the other which tends to suggest there are good driver swings and good iron swings but rarely a swing that works well all the time for both. At least amongst amateurs.

They aren't the same.

It's mostly set-up differences for me, but I also like to feel more loaded and that I'm taking the club away a hair wider with driver than any other club. It's the only club I tee up above the grass, so in my mind it's different. Oh, and I'm going HARD with driver - much harder than any other club in the bag.

I'm a proponent of slightly different swings. I think the swing path is generally the same but there are a few things, for me, that serve one better than the other.

Setup

Driver and 3woodn I like to setup with a bit more weight evenly balanced to help with a shallower impact.

For irons I like a bit more stacked feeling on the lead leg.

Takeaway

For driver and 3wood I like less early set. I like the clubs to set themselves. Again, helps keep things a bit more shallow.

For irons, i like a bit earlier wrist set. I feel like this helps me not shift weight, get the club on a bit steeper plane, and simply turn through the ball. It also helps keep the swing a bit more compact.

The swing itself is the same. I like a slightly outside takeaway (play a fade), smooth transition, and rotate and swing left through impact.

When I get to 9i through all my wedges I feel like I cannot set the wrists/club soon enough.

Works for me...

Yes and No same swing but you should make changes in setup to where the swing will appear very different

How about an analogy. Do I drive my car (right hand drive) the same way most people on here do (left hand drive). I'd say yes. But clearly we don't both do it exactly the same way.

If I changed the gear the way an LH driver does, I'd fall out of the car because the door would open ;)
