Help identify these Walter Hagens for me please

Hi Guys.

Picked me up a set of Walter Hagen Ultradynes. Pics below. The set also came with WH Ultradyne 1,3 and 4 woods. Scored.

I've done a bit of googling, and searched on here.

I found a thread where someone else picked up what looks to be the exact same set and says they are 1972. 2nd page of this thread -

So, I take it these are Red Button Ultradynes possibly early 70's. Can anyone tell me for sure what years they were made? and any other useful info.

Somewhere in that thread (or another one I saw) said that they were forged heads and that the Ultradyne II's came out mid-70's and were cast heads.

The ones I have appear to be in such good shape that I'd say they were cast. But doesn't say Ultradyne II on them.

The shaft band says Ultralite and Power Grooves, and an R (not sure if it's for reg flex or a registered trademark).

Grips are original and have the WH logo repeated up them.

Enjoy the pics, and anyone with any info on them, I'm all ears and very grateful.

Nice irons! I have the exact same set and I like them very much. The year is indeed 1972. I'm not sure if the "R" means regular or not, but I think Hagen went with the colored band around the shaft thing like Wilson. Mine have a black band around the shaft above and below the "Power Grooves" which I think means regular. Red would be stiff. I don't know if they are forged or not but I would guess so.

Mine had rock hard grips so they needed to go, but I really liked the Hagen silhouette endcaps so I cut the old grips off leaving the caps behind. I wrapped the caps with masking tape and carefully heated the shaft right beside the cap and pulled it out. I then installed new grips, cut the ends off, and goop glued the old caps back into the shafts. Worked great!

Thanks Swingingk. Great info.

Mine don't have bands above & below the "power grooves".

I've only just noticed from the photos of yours that the end cap is indeed a silhouette of the great man.

The end cap logos on mine have worn somewhat so I couldn't really tell that. Although the grips themselves are in excellent condition and easily playable.

And they say "Made in Scotland Haig Ultra".

I'll get some photos of the woods done soon. The face of them is real cool with the WH logo set back in the face under a clear front.

Yeah those caps are pretty neat aren't they. That's why I went to so much trouble to keep them on there. I bought these clubs with the full intention of playing them frequently so I had to have by beloved Lamkin full-cords grips. You're lucky to have playable original grips - I'm jealous. Lol!

Upon closer inspection of the shaft labels I'm going to say that the "R" in the circle does mean regular. They definitely feel regular in flex. The first shaft step on the 7-iron is 10-1/4" up from the top of the hosel, then (5) 1" increments, then a 4" increment, then back to 1" steps again to the grip. Just FYI.
