Equipment prices are insane this year!

I know we always complain about prices, but everything is really humping up this year. Irons in the $1300-1400 range. Drivers finally cracked $500. Fairways of $400!

I’m just amazed at it all this year. I got my TMB set used because they were so outrageously priced.

I know that nobody is making you buy new, but this won’t help newcomers to the sport.

No newcomer is looking at any of those clubs you mentioned.

They use their buddies, dad’s old set that was in the corner of the garage.

Or they get one of these before that corporate scramble: https://www.amazon.com/Callaway-Strata-Ultimate-Complete-18-Piece/dp/B00HK8BVZS/ref=asc_df_B00HK8BVZS/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312029710299&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15242390808350921570&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9013222&hvtargid=pla-449742730734&psc=1

Never ever buy new. Golf clubs depreciate a lot, even with-in the same year. Wait at least a year and then they are resaonable.

For me, iron and driver prices are reasonable but there were a couple of anomalies I know were really priced higher than average.

The Mizuno 300s (the one that Vijay won his first Masters with) was priced at $1000 in 2000 and I vivdly remember the R7 Superquad (All Black First Edition) was $700 when it first came out. That club was so special I remember it was displayed in its own glass display case at my local Golftown.

Thank God for Craigslist, Ebay and BST since I have both of those clubs used at a price that I can afford. My 300s is in my basement and my All Black First Edition Superquad is now my gamer.

I think there is no reason that newcomers to this game that the price of golf clubs should discourage them from playing since club technology has pretty much plateaued for at least a decade and one can get a decent set of used tour proven USGA conforming clubs for only a few hundred dollars.

Never in my lifetime has golf equipment have become more affordable.

The yahoo auction is very kind to golfers :). I picked up a set of RomaRo BBDV7's (one of the greatest underrated CB's of all time) in 5-P and the 3 & 4 hybrids to go along for next to nothing new in the wrappers. Ended up passing on that deal to a fellow forum member who's using them in league play.

Try the auctions. And not the ebay ones.

I'm actually shocked they weren't raising prices a little bit every year or so. Over the last 10 years, they haven't gone up that much in relation to most other items. As long as your not buying a new set of irons every year or so, it isn't that bad. I get bothered more by very average courses trying to charge $70 to play on the weekends.

Also, sometimes buying new is cheaper than buying used cause you can get the shaft you want. Buying used you might not find it with the set up you want and it will cost more to buy used and reshaft then just buying the new model.

Or it doesn't, depending on whom you talk to. For more than a

year Titleist and MacGregor have been selling oversize titanium

drivers for less than $300--or trying to, anyway. "They haven't

sold any," says Callaway Golf CEO Ely Callaway, smiling broadly.

"Ask any retailer." (We did. He's right.) Callaway, on the other

hand, has shipped 300,000 of its Great Big Bertha titanium

drivers, which retail for a robust $500. Industry giant Cobra,

seeking to establish itself in metal woods, has trumped Callaway

by pricing its King Cobra Ti (pronounced tee-eye) driver at a

mere $367, causing industry experts to conclude that Callaway

either will lower its price (it'll have to, if everybody follows

I've been disappointed with equipment pricing for awhile now. Might be just my age showing through though. This is compounded by the lack of any significant innovation, so you fork out big bucks for a few yards or nothing at all really.

The pricing on fairways and hybrids really shock me though. $400+ for a 3 wood is just crazy. As the previous poster indicated, in Canada it's much worse. Prices aren't proportionate to the U.S. even considering the exchange rate.

I couldn't agree more. I remember I went to my local Golftown some months ago and saw a hybrid from a major OEM go for over $400 CDN. I couldn't believe my eyes, I thought it was the price for their driver and someone there made a mistake. I checked again and that was the price. All the more reason the used club market is alive and well.

I personally think new fairways and hybrids should be almost the same price as wedges ($150-$200).

People talk about the prices of golf equipment being somewhat equal 20 years ago when you adjust for inflation. I think the big difference was the game was growing and companies were chasing those dollars. The number of golfers has been in decline for awhile. It seems like a lot several companies have cut back their products or jumped out of the game entirely.

It's definitely changed my golf buying habits. I still buy drivers new, that's just me. I tend to keep irons for a long time. And when I buy a set, it's usually a closeout model that's on sale. I bought a brand new set of JPX EZ Forged irons for $300 when the new models were out. I've got my eye on a set of Srixon 565s now that you can get a new set fairly cheap.

It's easy to buy new.Just go to any golf website or retail store and pick up models from 1-2 years ago for 50%-60% of new. Virtually the same stuff with different colors or paint jobs. If you think you're giving up much performance go to the golfwrx archives and search the club you are buying and see how great everyone was saying it was when it first came out.

Reminds me of the Tommy Armour Ti100 iron. It was one of the first irons that its clubhead was 100% Titanium. It came out in '96 and retailed for $1200 for steel and $1500 for graphite (which roughly is $1900 & $2400 in today's dollars).

Too bad that iron was a flop and pretty much killed the original iteration of that company and its management.

You could easily reach scratch with a ten year old driver and a set of Ping Eye 2s. You don't HAVE to spend a lot on clubs.

When you adjust for inflation, irons today are cheaper than irons some 50 years ago. A set of MacGregor VIP irons in the 60s would be over $1,600 today.

A set of Ping ISI were $699 in 1996. Thats about $1140 today. Seems fairly close to the cost for a set of iBlades today?

A lot of folks complain loudly about TM and their product cycles, but they can claim considerable responsibility for saving us from Callaway pricing. Imagine paying $800 for a driver these days, with a crappy stock shaft.

And here I was thinking that wedges were still reasonably priced compared to woods and irons. You can still get Vokey SM6's NOS for $139.87 + tax, lots of choice and the hot new Cleveland CBX for $135.98 + tax.

Maybe the new pricing on woods and irons is doing us a favour in that the used market should perk right up with folks far more willing to pay a fair price for good used kit? This isn't the first time the equipment has peaked in pricing. I have heard lots of stories around the club about fellows forking out over $1000 for a set of Eye 2's and over $700 for a Callaway Big Bertha Ruger Titanium driver back in the 1990's

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Agreed, the creep up the last year or so has been crazy. The RRP of a Titleist 915D when they came out four years ago here in the UK was £379.99. The TS drivers four years on have an RRP of £500 which is what about a 25-30% increase in four years. I know that things become more expensive but that is a large jump in the space of four years.

You can argue all day about the minute improvements in drivers, and irons, but wedges are without a doubt performing worse since the groove rule change. Paying more, significantly more and going backwards makes no sense. We can still play modified box grooves, but good luck finding them anymore.
