Your Personal Driver History

James the Hogan Fan

Recommended Posts

I was reading over posts of people’s favorite drivers, least favorite, etc, and got me to thinking about all the drivers I’ve ever had as best I can remember. My list is relatively short, and includes only clubs that were primary gamers, ie in the bag for at least 3 months, starting at age 10:

Spalding persimmons

Cougar (nondescript small head)

Callaway BB Warbird 12°

Nondescript non-brand club, 460cc at least

Callaway X 10.5

Taylormade R580 9.5

Cleveland Hibore 10.5

Callaway ft-9 8.5

Titleist 907D2 9.5

Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 9°

I know that’s not a lot, but I’m sure some of you out there have gamed many, many different big dawgs. Show us how you got to the club you’re hitting today (as best you can remember)

From the Age of 10 to now (22):

1. Paragon Driver - I can't remember the name of the model, but I had a box set of Paragon junior clubs to start my golfing journey.

2. TaylorMade Tour Burner 8.5° - Got this one as a hand-me-down from a friend. Boy I had no issue playing that club. I was probably 13 years old. Wayy to much club for me back then.

3. Callaway Diablo Octane Black 9.5° - One of the drivers made in collaboration with Lamborghini. Hit this one pretty well. Naturally, it didn't last long.

4. Adams Fast 12 LS 8.5° - Got this one used after all the praise on WRX. Probably the worst driver I've ever owned. Couldn't hit the thing. Luckily it was cheap and broke after about a month.

5. TaylorMade R1 12° - Decided that I needed more loft and got fitted for this one. Disgusting graphics on top, but surprisingly good results.

6. TaylorMade SLDR430 10.5° - The ultimate love/hate Relationship. I hit some of my longest drives with this one. Prone to the occasional duck hook. One of my favourite set-ups was this head paired with a Fujikura Pro P95 shaft at 44".

7. Srixon Z945 9.5° - Decided that I am too cool for USDM heads and got this Japanese beauty. 400cc. Not as forgiving.

8. Nike TW Vapor Speed - Bought this one mainly out of love for my man Tiger. Beautiful head, but a bit too spinny for me with the stock shaft.

9. Tour Issue TaylorMade M2 2016 - One of the best drivers I've ever had. Probably should've kept this one a little longer.

10. GBB Epic SZ - I liked the performance of it, but thought the shape was ugly. Was hoping for a 440cc head.

11. A Grind Classic 10.5 - Decided I am too cool for USDM (again) and got this one of Yahoo Auction. 350cc and without a doubt the most beautiful modern driver head out there. Still got it, but not very forgiving.

12. Ping G400Max - Went to the polar opposite of the A-Grind (as you do). Great performing driver, but I am in the process of selling it.

13. GBB Epic Forged. Another JDM head (see the theme?), but I am hoping this the one. 450cc head, bonded hosel, jailbreak, all titanium construction.

Does it count if you bought the club on eBay to try but then sold it after a round? How long does the club have to be in the bag to make the list? My list would be close to 50, depending on the criteria. But here is what I can remember as far as clubs that I bought that made their way to the course for any significant period of time:

I forgot 1! I had an old Taylormade Original One Pittsburgh Persimmon. It was 12.5 or 13 degrees I think, and I hit it off every tee and from the fairway as well back when I was like 15 or so. I loved that club.

As best as I can recall: the manufacturer, the model, and year it entered my bag

Persimmon era

  • PowerBilt ??? 1964 (yes, in grade school)
  • Wilson Staff 1967
  • MacGregor rework (backup driver of local golf pro) 1974
  • Custom driver (Oceanside, CA. club shop; very deep face - Hot!) 1976
  • MacGregor MT (persimmon) 1983

---------------------------------------------------

Metal Wood era

  • Pro Tour (component club, custom build) 1994
  • Air Zevo 1999
  • Calla HyperX Tour 2008
  • Maltby KE4 w/ XCalibur SL shaft trimmed to 44" (Built this myself at GolfWorks School - very accurate, but went nowhere as far as distance goes; lasted in my bag three rounds, replaced by RazrFit) 2012
  • Calla RazrFit 2012
  • Calla XR 16 Pro - 2016.... This one really works!

What's In The Bag (As of April 2023, post-MAX change + new putter)

Driver:  Tour Edge EXS 10.5° (base loft); weights neutral   ||  FWs:  Calla Rogue 4W + 7W

Hybrid:  Calla Big Bertha OS 4H at 22°  ||  Irons:  Calla Mavrik MAX 5i-PW

Ball: 1. Srixon Q-Star Tour / 2. Calla SuperHot (Orange preferred)  ||  Bag: Sun Mountain Three 5 stand bag

    * MD4 54°/10 S-Grind replaced MD3 54°/12 W-Grind.

Great Thread. I limited mine to only drivers that stayed in the bag for minimum 3 months (as you indicated in OP).

Since 1988 to present:

1. Tony Penna persimmon (stolen with bag at San Jose Muni 1989)

2. Henry Griffins - 9*

3. Henry Griffins - 11*

4. Ping G2 - 10*

5. Mizuno - 9*

6. PowerMax - 10*

7. TM R11s - 10.5*

8. TM R1 - 10.5*

Every year I try several new drivers to replace the R1 but nothing works as well. Maybe it's the V2 shaft that makes the difference? Or maybe it's the price tag?

Tour Edge Exotics C721 driver, Integra 45g L flex shaft
BombTech 2 HW 16*

BombTech 5 W
TM Sim2 19* hybrid
Maltby KE4 Max 5 - PW, Recoil Dart 65 A flex shaft
Maltby TSW-KRM 50*/54* wedges, Recoil 75 R flex/spinner shaft
Bettinardi Studio Stock #5 putter

Past drivers (that i can remember)

  • Titleist 915D3

That's 10 so far and I know there's a few more that I know i'm forgetting. I also messed around with the SLDR, 2016 M1, R9, 909 but those didn't stay in the bag long enough or were quick borrows to try out for a round or 2
