How to bring down a driver ball flight?

Recommended Posts

I'm currently gaming a Cally XR16 9.5 lowered down to 8.5 head with a Blue Bullet from Graphite Design Tour AD BB 6s.

I know I always have to upward swing for everything. Just wondering how to bring my ball flight of the driver down a bit.

I am not a long hitter by any chance but my carry would be around 250 or 260 easily with dead drop and a 1 yard back spin.

Any help would be great.

Could be casting or too steep, what part of the face are you making contact with?

When I was hitting overly up on the driver my miss was thin and heel. Having the ball land and backing up a yard sounds like casting/too much dynamic loft

I’m not an expert, if you post a swing video you’ll receive more qualified replies.

The XR 16 could be high spin.

Post numbers. Swing speed, ball speed, spin, launch, height, carry.

Shaft seems light compared to the rest of your woods/hybrids. I got stuck hitting my 910D2 too high. Kept adjusting it down to lower it. Only thing that really happened was it increased spin. Shaft in the 910 was too light (61 grams). Went to Rogue 70 in a 915 (which is I think 77 grams) and everything leveled off.

I had the same issue playing a Tour AD BB 6S. Moved to a Rogue 70 and it was a big change

Thank you for all the input.

I alway swing Up with the driver and try to hold/guiding the club face to the direction of my target as long as I could. I don't even know if I ever rotate my driver face at all. I think that how my driver swing is and I like it that way. I am very accurate with the driver. By doing that I can easily drive the ball in a straight line to whatever placement I am looking at. Except it is sky high and drop straight down with back spin in the Chicago winter.

Sometime I have to adjust the driver face to like a 5-6 degree (almost flat if you look down from the top) on the tee to bring the ball fight down.

That would put my hand/grip way ahead of my ball placement and I still swing up with it. But it help,

Never gaming with the 70gs shaft yet, but may be it is one of the solution. I also just bought another XR16 driver head with a 5* loft to test it out. (figure cross)

My iron swing very level maybe 1 or 2 degrees downward, but it is also really high with above carry distance, 8 is around 155 -160 for me.

So distance is just not a issue, just the ball flight is way higher then I would like it to be.

I think you should look more at the spin moreso than your height. I was at were you were a few years ago playing the 910d2 and having similar carry and no roll, or even balls that bounced backwards.

Switched to lower spinning heads and shaft and still hitting the ball the same height or a tad higher but the ball is now running out to 3bill land when I find a dry fairway!

Just bought a 5* XR16 driver head to test out!?!?

That’s specifically a long drive head. Good luck with that.

I mean you no offense at all, but You need to work on your swing my friend. You are doing something wrong. No one on this forum with fundamentally good swing actually needs anything less than an 8.5 driver head. Find a good instructor near you and spend your money with him.

5 degree long drive heads are not your answer....I promise.

Here's a different idea. Excessively high launch with driver does not necessarily mean too much spin; and going to increasingly lower loft driver heads may amplify the problem.

I went for an assessment recently due to the same concerns as OP. I had high launch and no roll out, but very low spin on Trackman (usually under 2000). After trying multiple heads and shafts, kept my current driver head with setting at 11*; new shaft 10 gms lighter and more flex; and shortened shaft 3/4" to overall driver length of 44".

Result: Increased spin (around 2300-2400); clearly lower launch; increased clubhead speed; and longer carry (250 yds, not counting roll out). I'm 66 and 5'6". Without help, I wouldn't have figured out best set-up.

this is maybe it.

I hurt my foot last week but I have to test it out.

Go with the rouge SZ 9* with a much heavier shaft weight Project X HZRDUS Yellow 75 (HANDCRAFTED) Graphite shaft

Yep. You may be fighting your equipment and the well-meaning attempts to fix it may be exacerbating the problem. Also, you may be making compensations in your swing to get the ball up in the air. Not saying the following applies to you, but another problem for many is vanity. It's just not manly to be seen using so-called women's or senior's equipment. If you have a 31" waist, would you buy pants with a 40" waist size? I think people do this kind of thing with golf equipment all the time.

That screenshot looks fine to me.

The averages on the screenshot look good. . Only issue is that your spin is dangerously low at your ball spoed.

Below 2000 and the ball falls out of the sky on the slightest miss hit. People mistakenly think lower spin is always better. At some point it definitely is not.

I’d like to see the numbers with the regular head vs the subzero. You should be looking for 2200-2300 average spin for a good “playing” spin rate.

For sure. My issue when spin drops under 2000 is that any sidespin you have is going to take over. Its really hard to control a knuckleball at 100+ mph swing speed.
