Winter jacket suggestions

Recommended Posts

My Ping Norse Primaloft jacket arrived from the UK today, took about 2 weeks.

I ordered a size Medium and it's about right, I think a small would be too tight.

It's very warm, wore it in the rain today (45*) doing errands and it was perfect (maybe a little too warm, it traps your body heat). I won't have a chance to test it on the links until end of this month but feels very easy to swing in and it's not noisy.

The sleeves near wrist are a little loose, I wish they were elastic. That's my only small complaint.

Edit - for some size perspective, I recently ordered the Sunice Huxley in Small and a Nike Aeroloft vest in Medium and all 3 fit very similar.

Quick review on this jacket. It is the best winter jacket for golf. I played in temps of 38*-42* with wind where the "real feel" temp was about 5 degrees lower. All I had on was a short sleeve golf shirt, the Ping Norse, winter pants and a beanie. It's truly amazing how warm this jacket is and how easy it is to swing in. My playing partner had 5 layers on and could hardly swing a club.

Also, now that I have worn the jacket a few times, I like that the sleeves do not have elastic.

The Ping Norse (UK version) is THE winter jacket for golf. No debate.

All we need Ping to do is make it widely available in the US.

Now you see why I've been singing the praises of this jacket for over a year now! lol. It's crazy how warm and non-restrictive it is. And it's coming back again (from what I hear, in maybe other colors than black) for this next year too.

Yeah, where can I get a Norse in the US that isn’t a L or 2XL from TGW?

What size are you looking for?

I assume a XL. does it run true to size or big? I’m a XL most of the time unless it’s trim fit or European fit.

I looked around quite a bit online and I don’t think the model I bought is sold in the US. The TGW version is not the same one that we have talked about in this thread.

Oh, good to know. Thanks on that heads up. Just thought they had a navy version.

I’m a bigger dude so to find less layers that aren’t bulky are great. Usually i have to wear something bulky or a lot of layers and either one gets in the way of the swing which honestly frustrates me to not want to play in colder weather. If I could find the Dalai Lama jacket, it would be great.

They are sized based on a Euro fit. I'm large and XL in US based sizing, but a clear XXL in the Norse. Look at the size measurement chart for the Norse.

thanks but the TGW one is a no go, right. So overseas is the only option to order?

The TGW one is the Zoned Norse, and is the least warm of the 3 Norse models. The one I/we are talking about in here is the original Norse. It's (actually all 3 models) are sold out in the US. If you can find one, it will probably be overseas, yes. Or...just luck up on a proshop here in the US that still has them in stock. PING won't have any more until next Autumn/Winter season.

The TGW version is called “zoned” which is different as that jacket has fleece.

This is the one you want

I have already stated in this thread but will add since it has been revived and i have used the norse more- it is the perfect winter jacket. I still wear a base layer only when its cold and overcast and windy but just a short sleeve under it or very thin long sleeve will do if it is sunny out. Only for sub 45 degrees unless windy and overcast. I was able to purchase mine from the pro shop when it first came out

Thanks but no damn XXL!! For us fatties. Y’all said this model was European fit, right? I’ll have to go XXL if true to have any hope. I’m 6’0 260 lbs.

I bought a Medium Norse Jacket and I wear a medium in Nike and UA shirts, vests and jackets. You may not need to size up.

Measure your chest, that’s the best way to see if the XL will fit

Apparel fit can dedicate from person to person, but as someone who sells PING apparel, far more often than not buyers (especially larger sizes, like the OP sounds) have to size up in there outerwear, as it's on a completely different for/cut than even their polos. Even PING themselves recommend (as a general rule) to size up for outerwear(again, above Medium sizes, which the vast majority of buyers are), if you're coming from another US based maker. For example, here's Under Armour's latest men's size chart:

f3255aa9e58169012a2501452cce18df.jpg

Compare that with the PING fit chart from the Spring/Summer catalog on my desk this morning:

61906206594d0daab07e7ae518e24129.jpg

You can see that for outerwear in sizes above medium, PING is almost exactly a full size smaller than Under Armour size for size.

And, you can see the difference in PING's own sizing from polos to outerwear(one full size difference all the way through), which is even more confusing for customers when you sell them a large polo that fits perfectly, but they have to buy an XL Norse to get a similar fit.

Just tried to order, under shipping it said "no quotes are available for this item" and didn't give me a continue button, so I assume that means no shipping to the states. Ah well. Only have to live without it a couple more months then maybe act quicker next year.

Measuring is always best, but you can also take a shirt or jacket that you have now that fits like you want and look up the actual size chart for that. And just reference back to the PING outerwear chart to see where you may be.

Chris,

What insulation or material makes the Norse special?

Anything else readily available that compares??

Well the magic material is the PrimaLoft insulation that keeps the wearer so warm, but that's not exclusive to PING. I have several other jackets (both golf and non-golf) that use that insulation. But for me, it's the overall construction of the Norse that sets it apart. The exterior fabric is so light and pliable that the jacket honestly wears light as a feather and you can almost forgot that you have it on. Just a stupidly comfortable jacket. It's high stretch material, so even though the jacket does have a more fitted or tailored cut, it doesn't bind or pull in a golf swing. Other jackets I have that have PrimaLoft (a UnderArmour golf jacket comes to mind) have much firmer exterior fabrics, and just don't seem as high quality. Also, for me personally since I'm SUCH a cold natured person, the Norse has the PrimaLoft insulation throughout the torso and full arm length. For me that's key, as I'm so cold natured that if my arms get cold, I'm done for. I freeze at that point.

Thanks

The Sunice Huxley seems similar but has no insulation on the arms

It’s not. I have both and the Huxley is for temps 55* +

It does not have the same insulation in the body of the jacket

I was about to pull the trigger on an L from TGW but I noticed that it's the Zoned, which I don't think is the one Chris is talking about. I've been scanning, but the only places that I've found that have the Norse Primaloft don't ship to the US.

Pretty sure these guys ship to the us- XXL only available

https://golfbase.co....rse-jacket.html

it gives the option to change the country to US and the currency to US dollars so it should work. And for Minarets, you should probably go XXL. Im 6 feet and 185-190 and got the large and it is very slim fit. I am right on the border for large vs XL for this jacket. I could have gone XL and even bought one last year and sent it back because it was just a bit bigger than I wanted in the body but it would have worked fine. At your listed measurements the XXL should be fine. I wish the sleeves on mine were an inch or 2 longer but i like the fit in the body better.
