Why don't we see any 8802, Napa, Tess style putters?

Is that a Cobra Dick de la Cruz in there? I game and love the milled model 88, almost no one has ever heard of them.

There's 2x Cobra's in there Rev.

A CNC Classic (4th from top, brownish finish with Cobra on back of the top line). I gun-blued it myself and it's mellowed to that color.

And a Blade 001 (one of the steel/satin finish ones).

Both nice putters, but I love the CNC Milled Classic. Probably because it was a wreck when I picked it up and I put a lot of hours into it. I did a thread about it somewhere back in the mists.

Nicklaus and Crenshaw are arguably the two greatest lag putters ever. They both used heel shafted blades.

Think the young guys see stats on the SAM and go with that, also they use what they grew up liking, which is often a modern mallet.

Love the 8802, Iron master style

Was using a Toney Penna forged 8-IM style the other day playing with a friend the other day and he asked why people switched to anser style

I told him the story about lee Trevino on the putting green right when Karsten was trying to get the pros to try his putter

Lee started putting with one and started yelling to the other players on the green to try it, He said if I miss the sweet spot on the anser it still goes straight, He said if I miss it on my 8813 it goes way off line. That was the beginning on the change to anser style when pros wanted less chance of miss and someone like Trevino backing them

I play an old Arnold Palmer AP30r. I have two, one with a sightline, one without. I prefer without

I've been toying with the idea of having a custom putter builder make a milled replica for me. Maybe in carbon steel. Whaddya guys think? Who would you recommend for this project?

He might be out of the game these days but I talked with Tom Slighter about making me a custom 8802 style putter out of damascus. His customer service is top notch and his craftsmanship is excellent.

Callaway Rogue ST Max - Tensei AV White - 8*
Taylormade M3 HL - MFS5 White Tie 60S -0.75" (42.5")

Mizuno JPX 923 HMP - 4-G - Recoil 95 S - 2* upright

Callaway X-JAWS - 52/58*

Odyssey OWorks 2ball  -  34" - 1* loft - 71* lie
Slighter Proto 1 #9/Del Mar design - High Toe - Long neck - Deep Milled face - 33", 370gr, lie 71*, loft 4*

If you miss the sweet spot by a fraction, the ball doesn't go on it's intended line or travel the intended distance.

I love the look of a heel shafted blade (I've owned a few), but a 40 foot lag is just terrifying with one.

I find the opposite, especially with long lag putts. I use an old Palmer AP30r. It's as unforgiving as it comes, but I lag the ball better with it than anything, and I've tried plenty over the past 25 years. Just a feel thing I suppose?

The sweet spot is definitely tiny, but I dont find it hard to start the ball on my intended line. Slight mishits do typically just come up a little weak/short which can be frustrating though

Kind of late to the party....

I also don't find my mishit putts with a heel shafted blade drifting off line. Short, certainly.

Interestingly, you can find 8802ish sticks with an MOI on the high side, relative to anything not a high MOI mallet. The Snake Eyes Viper Tour Sv1 had an MOI noticeably higher than the original Anser. I expect a portion of that is due to the weight, as the SE is on the heavier side of the blade world, but it shows what's possible.

I've tried various mallets, my distance control usually goes to complete junk with them. I may try again, see if I can figure out why....

You are in the States right? For the kind of putter you want to replicate, I would go straight to David Mills (TP Mills). Failing that, Lamont Mann or Byron Morgan or Gene Nead.

Good luck. :-)

Rob

Or try out an old Spalding T P Mills :taunt:

Still have an old #17 kicking around....

A post of mine from when my putting was at its nadir....

=============== :-

Not too long ago, when I was an utterly hopeless putter and had decided to stop caring about my putting - I decided to just use whatever felt and looked good to my eye, as it couldn't make any difference anyway what size the sweetspot or MOI was...

wish I still had an Acushnet La Femme bullseye I got 20 years ago, but came across this old T.P. Mills Splading in a shop. Wasn't really for sale, but the guy agreed to let me buy it since i liked the feel and it looked so nicely beat up.

Ended up changing the shaft to a KBS black nickel and a black leather TP Mills grip, but the head is 'as is' - i love the dings.

Love seeing some of these old 8802 styles.

I've got one of the Yonex above that Phil played. But it's waaaay too shiny in our Queensland sun, so rarely gets an outing.

And I too love the Spalding TPM's. More than 1 variety is 8802-ish. Got a couple of TPM 7's myself. One of them I buffed up nicely. it's a stunner (but also a bit shiny).

Here's a photo of my Spalding TPM fleet (minus the one above).

And at very bottom of the photo sneaking in is a Titleist Bullseye Heel-Shafted Flange putter with sound slot.

Finally (for now) here's my 2x Old Master W802's.

One left in "as is" condition with a beautiful patina. The other buffed up in all her glory. Enjoy.

Hey craz-e. That is a Touring Pro Model Spalding TPM V.

I collect the "Roman Numeral - Touring Pro Model series" (around 1968 on I'm told).

I've got 4 of them. I, III, V and VI.

There were 9 in all from I to IX.

I also have different series TPM 7 and TPM 3.

Keeping up with this one, just got an 8802 milled off the bay and in the last two weeks all I can say is wow! Had a sam fitting a couple of months ago and determined I was fairly strong open to close so of course all the answer styles they sell were recommended, just tried a heel shaft on a whim and have to say I'm joining the heel shaft crowd!

I'm thinking of going to a heel shafted or maybe an FCB-type of putter. I seem to putt so much better (and enjoy putting more) when I use these styles of putters.

Id say its more a matter that blade putters are becoming more and more rare. Feel is great but putting today is really more about heavier heads, aiming/alignment lines and forgivness than they are about feel.

Ive got a Wilson 8802 and Titleist Bullseye and theyre beautiful putters that are fun to put in the bag from time to time but I have much more confidence with a big mallet because I know where Im aiming.

Im just a regular guy playing on the weekends for fun at my local muni. If I were a pro who were putting with hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line, why would I put myself at a competitive disadvantage my using an 8802?

Grew up idolizing Crenshaw, then young Phil, so it was blade all the way. Pride of my first golf career was an early SC Napa. It was stolen during the move back from NZ, then I had kids and didn’t play for 15 years, sold the clubs what clubs hadn’t been nicked, and when I reconnected with the game Napa prices seemed prohibitive.

Now I bounce back and forth between extremes, a McGregor Nicklaus-Muirfield on one hand, and an Evnroll ER5 on the other. With the Evnroll I really feel the putter and my shoulders, with the Muirfield I really feel the ball and my hands. It makes no sense but sometimes I miss one or the other and switch.
