Found My Great Grandfather’s Full Bag, thoughts?

Romdant

Recommended Posts

I found theses clubs today. They are Sam Snead Championship made by Wilson irons 2-9. The woods are Splading and some others 1-5 wood. The bag is a Tufhorse made bag for Dunlop.

I would love to get everything restored and put on display in the man cave. Does anyone have recommendations or any thoughts on what these may be worth?

UPDATE 1/14/18:

Here is the full inventory and photo gallery (note individual club photos are pre-cleaning session. Most rust came off during cleaning)

Money wise they are not collectable but sentimental wise I would say priceless. Those old Tuffhorse bags are well built. You do not find many of them today due to the fact most guys used them until they wore out. I like the gesture of you having them maybe rechromed and putting in your man cave. As far as the bag if Fellaheem chimes in he is an expert on leather stuff. I would also leave the little strip with his name on there which I presume was a owner identification thing from the locker room of the course he was a member at. I can see you having them restored and keeping in your man cave and passing on down to future members of your family.

you can do that clean up yourself and have something really great to show off.

put everything on an old sheet or drop cloth.

clean the clubs with soapy rag and a scotch brite on the heads. white vinegar soaking can remove some rust, if you decide to get really involved.

if the shaft labels are attached, clean around those carefully.

the bag should be brushed and vacuumed of all loose dirt and debris.

turn it over and dump it out, including all pockets.

then go at it with a damp but not dripping soapy cloth.

vacuum it again to clean off what you loosened up.

go over everything with a damp clean towel.

all set.

Agree with most. The name label looks like an old home label maker from the 60's. We had one at our house. Turn the disk and press for each letter. :)

Yep that is what it was-- The cheap ones at K- Mart were made of plastic with a metal lettering disk and the commercial ones were made of pot metal I take it. Just remembered that thing was called a Dynamo Label maker. We had one at the shop for stamping bag tags with. Funny when we get to talking about stuff it can jog the memory---- 2 hours ago I could not tell you what that thing was called to save my life :to_become_senile:

Yep that is exactly how those things worked---- His Great Grand Paw over the years may have put some stronger glue on that tag. I know we did some labels in the maintenance shop and they kept falling off. One of the guys used 3M Weather Strip Adhesive ( or elephant snot as we used to call it) and they were still in place 20 years later when the place closed.

I remember using that 3M glue to reattach the weatherstrip on my Pontiac. early 80's maybe.

bet you a dollar there's an old red and black box with half a tube somewhere on a workbench here.

Bet you a dollar back that weatherstrip stayed on until that Pontiac went on to the crusher too. that rubber will rot before that stuff quits sticking

Thanks everyone for the feedback and recommendations. I kind of figured they weren't worth much (wasn't looking to sell regardless) but definitely worth everything to me personally. It was just amazing that the full bag was still together over the many years of changing hands.

My next step is to get a full inventory of the clubs make and model with more pictures to post back to this forum. My friends and I are driving to the Masters this April for the Wednesday practice round but will be making a week long golf trip out of it. One of the rounds we are looking to play woodhead drivers off the tee and these vintage putters on the green only rounds. I think it would make for a fun competitive round and pay tribute to the past time of golf.

What you have been advised - except I would not rechrome for the irons.

More pics of clubs, including grips. If they are leather, good cleaning with saddle soap (maybe 2x) - then lexol.

Do you have any recos on restoring the leather on the bag (handle, strap, headcovers)? They are really stiff and somewhat dry rot

Dynamo label maker. I recall having one, don't know where it be. The one I had may have been a clone. I got it for free at Radio Shack, they used to have coupons in their flyers for free stuff, like 5 cell flashlights. I recall Aunt Mildred used to give me a flashlight before I left for Army Reserve two week summer camp. She'd give me batteries from the Shack's battery a month club. Took her 5 trips to fuel that flashlight.

Back in the day, Aunt Mildred and her husband were at every grand opening in our area. I recall her giving me a Esso tiger tail back around the time I bought the Dodge. That tail was in the Dodge glove compartment ever since. I must have given it to my neighbor, with the car.

In the mid 1970s, she must have bought a bunch of clip on bow ties on clearance. She gave me those ties for birthdays and Christmas for years. Very rarely wore them as a young pup. I still have a couple. Learned to tie the real McCoy at age 60. I wear bows now. Old guys can get away with that stuff.

Aunt Mildred, a wonderful lady.

First off, you need to determine whether or not the bag is really all leather. There was a point in time where all bags were (I had a kangaroo leather bag at one time) but as leather costs rose, along with shipping costs based on weight, manufacturers began substituting vinyl and plastics.

If you are near a good shoe repair place (or even if you aren't) when you get there, ask the people there their recommendations.

If you have dry rot, it will most likely be where the handle attaches to the bag, as oils from hands over time created the mess causing the rot. Not much can ever be done once dry rot has taken hold.

That's a really cool find, OP. Great that you will always have that memory.

Also, love that everyone is so stoked by that Dymo label strip. Back in the day, that was a country club bagroom staple. You had to have it to make the strip for a bag tag for every member. I think bag tags are still pre-cut with a place for that label strip today!

Thank you! Looks like there are some spots that are vinyl. I'm sure I can find a shoe repair place in Philadelphia.

Another option is to leave everything as is for your mancave except for maybe a light clean to remove dust and then keep an eye on ebay and the like for the same clubs. Yes it will cost more however if a club is damaged due to due to a crack or fault you hadn't noticed, I would imagine you will feel less bad if it is from the set off ebay rather than your Great Grandfather's clubs
