Light up the industry just doesn't sound like the impact a ball deal would have, but hyperbole in advertising isn't anything new that's for sure!

So signing away a lifelong titleist ball user with the star power of a Rickie Fowler to their first ball/glove only deal wouldn't light up the industry? Imo it would be closest thing to a game changing signing there is outside of Tiger or Phil by a company

Ricky has yet to win a major and is no longer the next young thing. He's like Rory without the great early years.

I don't care much who plays what, as I am sure 99% of golfers don't, but even if I did, this would not be it - he's never been OWGR number 1, and is not even top 10 now

Yet he still moves a ton of Puma clothing and hudson swafford isn't even in the same marketing league as Rickie. Having Rickie play a tp5 Nd bring sble to use it against titleist would be huge for Tm.

There's a lot more people who buy golf related items based on tour usage than those who don't. If that wasn't the case there would be no need for companies to sponsor players.

Hudson swafford was a joke. Goodness

I'm telling you nobody knows which ball rickie plays outside this site. They only know cobra/puma.

It very likely is Rickie. But he isn't going to change anything for anybody. Just more smoke and mirrors from TM as they try to stay afloat. Maybe they are sweetening the pot for the next buyer ?

What ball does Rickie play? lol - No idea and I really don't care. Wake me up when he starts dominating.

Ball sponsors I get, but glove sponsors just seem weird to me. Does anyone care, or even notice what glove someone is

using?

I guess the manufacturers care,,, obviously more than your average Forum Joe. Though some here could tell you the brand of underwear many of the pros wear...

Anyway TM found a way to get Phil away from Callaway?

Yes....When they put him in the ground.

Lol. Phil playing Tm. When hell freezes over. #1. They can’t afford him now. #2 why ? He has the best money can buy catering to him.

I received a letter/email from David Abeles at TaylorMade the other day. This is what he said:

"In addition to our continued product leadership, we are preparing to make one of the most significant announcements in company history - a new addition to our athlete team that will light up the industry and enhance the impact of our brand like never before. Please stay tuned. You will hear from us in a couple of weeks!

We believe 2019 will be our best year yet. We are inspired by the momentum in our industry and all of the work being done across channels to drive participation in golf. We are proud of the progress we are making in our business together, bullish about our growth plans for 2019, and looking forward to an early spring with strong demand for our new products.

On behalf of the entire TaylorMade Golf team, we thank you for your continued dedication to our partnership and for all that you do to make this possible.

Sincerely,

David Abeles

CEO TaylorMade Golf"

So, my question is, will this be the Rickie Fowler ball/glove deal announcement or is this something else? Obviously the Rickie deal is the second worst kept secret behind Rose/Honma, but I don't think he is going to be playing their new TruVis copycat ball until later in the spring, so why announce it now? And that announcement certainly doesn't fit or live up to the type of hype insinuated in this letter. I love Rick and wish him the best but he wouldn't even be the third most successful player on their tour staff. Talk about disappointing if that's the real announcement.

Which leads me to my second question... are they seriously going to make a big announcement during the PGA Show, which they are not attending? What a joke. Hopefully they postpone it until well after the show.

I'm interested to hear what the truth is behind this "most significant announcement".

Just curious, but what do you do that you would get a letter/email from the CEO of TaylorMade Golf?

It’s a corporate letter. Everyone even remotely attached to Taylormade in some fashion received that email. He’s trying to be funny like the letter was sent only to him but it came off rather lame. Either that or the OP really doesn’t know he wasn’t the only one who got that email.

Of course it was a corporate letter. But I don't think the OP was trying to be funny in any way because he obviously knows he wasn't the only one to get it.

Yep, plenty of people. There's a reason equipment has the colors and designs that they do.

But seriously, are you new here? People ask about every single thing players are using even down to socks and belts. Yes people care.

I don't think Rickie in a glove ball deal is nearly big enough to announce it like its tiger 2.0.

Not really news since he isn't even going to wear a hat and pretend to play their clubs. But with their recent hyperbole I wouldn't be shocked if it is Rickie.

I'll bet $100 it's brooks, spieth, or champ.

I think it's Damon Hack

It's not Fleetwood. How can he be a bigger signing that Tiger or Rory? Impossible. As mentioned it may even be a curve ball and not even a player.

Following that logic, how could it be Fowler or koepka? I understand koepka had a great year last year but I definitely wouldn’t consider signing him as a larger feat than signing tiger. Which would leave champ or possibly a non golfer like curry but as mentioned before he’s a callaway guy.

So the thread title seems to infer that it is Fowler, correct? Or is it still just a rumor?

According to several Taylormade employees I’ve spoken with over the last month or so have said that Rickie will be playing their ball at some point this year. Not sure about the glove. Unless something changes, the rumors from the fall appear to be accurate. I don’t know when they are going to officially announce it. And I don’t know if Rickie’s announcement is the one referred to in the mass email.

Nope. Not even close. Rickie playing a Tm ball is equal to Hudson swafford sighning with Rays short haul trucking for a hat deal. Most people couldn't tell you which ball he played anyway. Why would they notice if he swapped ? It's what's on the hat that matters.

Honestly, outside of golf do people know Rickie Fowler? A ball deal would be like never before? Ok for maybe 25 people.

Titleist removed Rickie from their ball players list on the Tour page of their website. Rumors for the past week or two are that Rickie has signed a deal to play the new TP5 ball. Nothing has been officially announced.

It looks like he is not making his 2019 debut until the Farmers Insurance Open next week. Since that is one of his major sponsors - it would make sense that the announcement would come the week of that event.

If this is to officially announce Rickie using the TP5 that's such a joke of an email. Nobody but the most hardcore WRX'ers probably even know/care what ball Rickie uses. Plus, I've heard he uses a modified ProV anyway, so... who cares. Signing Rickie to a ball deal cannot be one of the "most significant announcements in company history".

As far as I'm concerned, there can't be anything bigger than signing Tiger to woods, irons and wedges or even Rory to a full bag deal after he had Callaway in the bag. Out of the current top 10 of OWGR, TM has 3 staffers listed on their website. BK is world #2 right now, but he just put 919 Tours in the bag... and I just don't see him moving away from his vokey's and SC putter. It's not earth shattering if they signed him to a metal wood deal... He already uses TM Dr and 3w.

Maybe "officially" signing Molinari as a big name staffer? He's already basically fully TM except putter, which I believe he has a deal with Betti for. All the rest of the top 10 is spoken for. Only others I could think of would be Fleetwood going full bag, including putter. Still...not the biggest news ever, nor game changing.

There are a lot of guys on Tour who have their own version of the OEM ball offering that is tailored for them. Callaway does it for Phil and other players. There are multiple versions of the ProV1 (left dot, plus. etc) and there are 5 versions of each of the TP5 and TP5x that are on the USGA conforming list (DJ has his own variation and others do as well). TaylorMade could very well have created something specifically for Rickie that is a variation of the standard offering.

I would agree that if that email was about Rickie's ball signing then that is overkill. I also wonder what list you have to be on to get that email ha.

If it's a ball/glove deal with Rickie, that is a big deal. Signing the #12 player in the world to use your product is a major announcement. Think about it. He's a long time Titleist ball loyalist, so if you can get him to come over and play your product it's validation that you have something special.

Aside from that, it would indicate a strategy shift. How many other guys do they have with ball deals? Any? People have long claimed that the only reason players use a TM ball is because they're under contract to do so because of the other clubs. This would show that is absolutely not the case.

Exactly. You see Taylor Made and Callaway staff players playing Titleists, but you don't see non staffers playing TM or Cally. This is where they have to make inroads. There are plenty of guys not obligated to Titleist to go after, like Ping, Mizuno, PXG, etc. players.

How is Cobra golf doing as a company? I read it as an over-reaction so I am over-reacting in a possible scenario.

Is it possible that Cobra golf is struggling and TM is acquiring them? "a new addition to our athlete team that will light up the industry and enhance the impact of our brand like never before."

Would make sense for Rickie to come over on a ball deal and then "enhance the impact of our brand" they, as in TM, will have a single length club option in Bryson being an athlete?

Again, their email sounds like they are possibly over-reacting to their announcement so I am just trying to think of what would be worth over-reacting to.

Yeah that's common GolfWRX knowledge, but not "layman" knowledge. I just don't see a Rickie ball deal as being anything other than ho-hum. Titleist still has probably 50%+ of all professional tour players using their ball. Losing 1 guy isn't going to wreck the Titleist brand and suddenly propel TM forward.
