Things to do while waiting for Bandon

Just started my 3 month countdown, so not incredibly far behind you. It's about a 7 hour drive for me and I'm usually so amped on the way to Bandon, I can drive the entire trip in one leg without blinking. On the way home, I usually fall asleep behind the wheel about 30 minutes into the drive and need to switch drivers.

Ya the drive there is awesome :)

From the Bay Area I would make 1 stop near Redding or potentially a 2nd one in Weed if I took I5. Taking the coast it would be straight to Crescent City for the night.

The drive back though really is awful. You're bummed for leaving and then driving all that way in the dark and getting home at 1 or 2 am is no fun. I5 rest areas at midnight aren't exactly the best places to get a 15min nap in either.

After driving from SF one time and Seattle another, i think i will now fly into North Bend. The drive kills you and the time it takes to drive is more or less the time it takes to connect and fly into NB.

If you're coming from the East Coast or South America, ya I wouldn't recommend SEA or SFO and a car hire, unless you wanted to add in a bit of a coastal roadtrip. But I was referring to when I lived there. It is a hike, but there is something cool about just hopping in the car, leaving the office, and off you go.

I'm also a Never-North Bender ;)

Last year (first trip) was a drive to and from Seattle. Everything you've said aligned with our trip- we left at 3 am morning of- but we were so excited to get there it was no issue at all. The drive home after our final round was long, sad, and not nearly the same. Next year, for trip 2, we're flying to Eugene (found flights for $90 round trip) and renting a car. We're landing the morning prior to our arrival at the resort and either heading to stay the night at the casino in Mills Bay or doing a stay and play at Bandon Crossing.

Living in Portland for 4 years, I kick myself knowing that overnight (or even day trips if you're really feeling it) could have been possible, but I never once took advantage.

Flying vs Driving from Seattle? I think driving takes about 7.5 hours, and flying to Eugene with car rental may save you about an hour and a half.

I can see how flying would be advantageous because it's less tiresome and could get you there in shorter time. However, it definitely is an extra cost. Is there any other non obvious pros and cons?

It was only $90 so we jumped on it. We can sleep/read/watch movies, we aren't burning gas and saving close to 1k miles on one of our vehicles, we can drink a few beers in the lounge prior to our flight, but the biggest pro to me is we don't have a 7 hour drive home on Sunday. We can take our time getitng to the airport, having a good meal, and get home at the same time.

I love my job, but it was so hard to come in to the office this morning. We played Monday and Tuesday this week. We were prepared for the worst, but the weather was absolutely fantastic. I couldn't play to save my life, but between just being there, our caddy, the guys, etc., it was a trip I'll never forget.

We stopped by Langdon Farms on the way down. It was in great shape and a really good value. If you're looking to squeeze in some more golf, definitely stop by.

I hear you about driving back is not the best. I wouldn't look forward to that. I guess you can split the drive back into two days instead so it's less of an ordeal. Do you plan on checking in your golf clubs or shipping them to Bandon when flying?

Since we're just flying to Eugene, checking as I don't see any issues getting them there (would ship if we were flying to Coos Bay/North Bend). We're also landing on a Monday with golf at the resort starting Tues, so have enough wiggle room *if* anything comes up. Right now three of our 12 have booked flights, so if any of the guys on the trip end up driving, will probably throw them in with them so I can just step off the plane to the rental.

Leaving for Bandon in a week, will be my first time ever and I couldn’t be more excited. For those of you Oregon natives, what would be the best golf shop to swing by for golf outerwear (already have good gore Tex top and bottom, but looking for other layers) either in Portland or somewhere on the way down?

In Portland there is a shop called Redtail that has the best clothing selection and generally some decent sales. Outside of that Fiddlers Green in Eugene is the best for clubs but i’m Not sure on their clothing selection.

For value, what do you guys think of Red Tail in Beaverton?

Also, the resort has a great selection of logo apparel from tons of great manufacturers, but of course it's full price.

Red Tail is the best in the Portland area, IMO.

Agree, Redtail is best in Portland, but Fiddler's has tons more of everything - clubs, clothes, shoes, etc.

And Fiddlers is also pretty much on the way to Bandon, whereas Redtail is not on the way to anything except traffic headaches (assuming the questioner is arriving at PDX and not staying in Portland)

"take that, you miserable little white swine!"

Are they "Discount Dan's" or am I thinking of someone else?

I'm not from Oregon, but I find the best place in Oregon to buy golf clothing is eBay and other online retailers ;)

Yup, I figured if I didn't see anything on the way down that I would just go browsing on site and likely pick something up there, but for some reason I prefer not to load up on logo apparel when I play courses (hats can be the exception). I've got a wall with logo balls from every course I've played in my basement and that logo ball always seems like its enough of a keepsake...plus its cheaper!

From my knowledge Discount Dans is a shop out on the coast. I may be wrong though.

EDIT... to clarify that shop on the coast is about 6 hrs north of Bandon.

Potentially a short sleeve waterproof or wind proof, or another layering/wind jacket. I’ve already got solid waterproofs in a Galvin Green top and ProQuip bottomsthat have held up in torrential downpours for me, but our selection is poor in Milwaukee and I always enjoy getting to try stuff on before buying if I can. Seemed like Oregon would have a store or two that would cater well to selection of poor weather gear...

^TBH if that's the case and you don't want to pay through the nose with proshop prices, you could just stop at REI in Eugene.

That I know of the Golf Galaxy is still down by the airport. I would say beyond that are Fiddler's Green or at Bandon. Driving to gearhart would significantly slow the drive and you'll hit traffic trying to get to redtail. I know REI was mentioned. There's also one of those in the Bridgeport area of Portland, which is right off of I-5. There's also the outlet malls in Woodburn on your way down but like most outlet malls, could be hit or miss.

Sadly, REI doesn't have short sleeved windshirts...I guess we as golfers are the only ones that use them (other than maybe baseball...). I fortunately have a good REI near myself already.

Also, here's a quick question for the Bandon vets...I understand that the weather is highly variable, so should I have my waterproofs packed every day, even if the morning forecast looks perfect? It's not like they're heavy, so I was simply planning on packing them regardless, but wanted to see if that was being overly cautious.

Unless it's one of those front has blown through 0% rain for at least 24hrs (it does happen) forecasts, I'd at least put the rain jacket in the bag, if not the trousers too, if I was carrying. If I was using a Rickshaw, then both jacket and trousers.

A good carry bag with just your clubs, tees, 3 balls, and water is a delight, but ya better safer than sorry.

And of course if your rain jacket is not cumbersome, you could just wear it in lieu of a fleece/wind jacket.

Look at the caddies in groups before yours. If all of them are wearing the white jumpsuit then you can probably leave the waterproofs behind. If they have waterproof gear on, bring yours.

If it's cool enough, I usually just wear my rain pants in lieu of regular pants. I either wear my lined rain pants, or my unlined with or without under armor heat gear leggings (can get sticky if it's warm and you go bare)..................If it gets warm, unzip the bottoms and let some air in.
