Played 18 holes (well almost 18 since I rinsed it on 18) and a saw nothing out of the ordinary for a ball that I played 17 holes with. TP5X. It's a good ball, but since I have a supply of ProV1x's, I will continue on with those. IMO, nothing to see here other than anecdotal evidence which you see everytime a new hot ball comes out (good and bad - including me).

Buddy bought 2 dozen recently to give em a shot, most of the day went well and we get to a par 5, he hits a pretty hard draw but lands in the fairway, followed by a thinnish shot that goes long of the green with a 3 iron. Gets up and down and when he pulls the ball out of the cup it has a 2mm or so section just missing from it and you can see the layer below the cover completely. He stated it was a brand new ball on that hole as the previous had a nasty cart mark and he didn't want to tee off with that on a par 5. Bad batch maybe? I won't be trying them after seeing it though, it was almost as bad as when a mower blade clips one.

I spin the heck out of the ball and regularly have to take a ball out of play after one full wedge shot. I've found the TP5X to be more durable than the ProV1 and about the same as the B330. That being said, no ball will survive clean cart path strikes, tree trunks, etc...

I've found their durability to be very good and I'm almost through my 2nd box. To me, they are very similar to the 2015 Pro V1x durability wise. Maybe you got a bad batch.

Most of you guys sounds like ultra pro golfer snobs. :stop:

We all don't play perfect golf so give the man a break. :busted_cop:

In terms of my average round, regardless how crappy I may or may not play, I found the TP5x durability compared to a B330(-S) was below average. My typical round is different then your typical round because I might hit a tree or two, or hit my ball off some dirt because that's how I roll. So like OP, I am comparing durability between my average round, not a +10 index average round.

I didn't see anyone say they don't encounter the same pitfalls during a round. I only saw people say they don't question the durability of their ball when they hit brick walls, cart paths, trees, etc.

I, too, compare durability of balls. It is a major concern of mine, because I am willing to sacrifice some slight benefits if a ball doesn't get fish gills every time I strike it with a wedge- unfortunately I don't get golf balls for free. But, I just dismiss any damage from hitting anything on a course other than a club face or grass. That's on me, which is the sentiment most are trying to convey here.

You clearly missed my point. My point is that everyone judges durability of a ball based on their average round and what happens in that round, not based on a perfect round of golf. Agree or disagree, this is what happens mang!

I love the use of mang!

It’s funny how many people came out to bash OP and swear by the ball, when the easy scuffing is literally one of the main points they are addressing for their 2019 version. At least we can laugh at the comments now.

I bought a box and most are showing scuffing after 3-4 holes in regulation.

They scuff more than Payless shoes on a gym floor.

Looking at this thread I wonder if there is random quality control at TM. Or are these eBay knock-offs or used water balls. I’ve played the TP5X since it came out and found it to be as durable as other comparable balls. Plus last year I got new irons and wedges so I know my grooves are fresh. Sure they scrape if you hit a cart path but otherwise no issues. Or are some of these reports where people may be playing courses loaded with rocks (I’ve seen some ugly courses in my day).

its not durable.. i play with a 1 handicap guy who only used tp5X.... he goes through a sleeve a round some rounds for one scuff or another ...or at minimum , at least 2 balls... I have used chrome soft x B330s and V1 for 36 holes several times before retiring

I must admit I hit the occasional tree or cart path. All of those hits are not created equally. Say, for instance, sometimes I just hit a glancing blow off of a tree or perhaps a limb, I expect a yellow sap mark but not a scuff mark. Or, if I top one and it rolls down the cart path at low velocity, I should be able to keep that ball in play.

In all seriousness I used to get the fish scale hairs from hitting the older generations of ProV's with my wedges. It was very clear that from 2013 to 2018 they worked very hard to keep the feel and spin the same while making the cover more and more durable. In my opinion the Srixon Z Star covers are durable as well. My guess is it will take TaylorMade a few generations of making the TP's to get it right.

Probably this. I have now seen the other side of the story: I played the last ball for 18 holes and still looks as good as one would expect from a quality ball. Can probably give it another 18, since the scuffing would have already shown if it was as bad as the first few balls of the box.

Same...full wedge, partial wedge, bunker shot...cover will either have a large scuff, fish scaled, or completely torn. Great performance otherwise, looking forward to the 2019 ball
